  • More Special, Less Privacy

    27/07/2015 Duração: 53min

Jacob Cook from arkOS is with the guys for part 2 of the discussion on privacy. Jacob says we should trust the investigation techniques we’ve used for years rather than collect everyone’s data. Meanwhile, Paul has a great metaphor for online privacy, the front door of your home. We mentioned it in the show notes for the last episode, but we talked about the Last Weeek Tonight video on Edward Snowden in this part. (NSFW) Jacob recommends Citizenfour, the Oscar winning documentary about the Snowden leak while Chris is not as impressed. Watch it on iTunes. Chris recommends The Internet’s Own Boy which you can also watch on iTunes. Trusting websites and companies with our data online is one thing. We also have to trust our friends with whom we share. You send them pictures & information all the time. They could get hacked or use gmail and your data is at risk. Diaspora is a social network that is decentralized. • Which Tech Giant Do You Trust Less?

    16/07/2015 Duração: 01h04min

This week Chris wanted to talk about privacy so he and Paul invited Jacob Cook the father of arkOS to talk about the importance of confidentiality and better ways to protect yourself online. Subtle Reminder: We have a chat channel on the freenode IRC network you can join during live shows on Thursday nights to interact with us. Or jump in on other days and maybe you run into Chris or Paul. Look for #montrealsauce on freenode or hit the live page on our site. We discuss the spotted history of online payments where Elon Musk’s Paypal was the only choice. Paul & Jacob prefer using stripe when they are developing. Edward Snowden has exposed a number of things about government data collection. The truth is that they cannot provide one case where mass surveillance has stopped an actual terrorist act. Last Week Tonight has an excellnt video on the subject. It’s NSFW. Jacob’s arkOS has a number of ways for you to host your own data. Jacob tells us there are great alternatives out there for ev

Chris tries to show off, saying he learned Spanish from watching, Home Alone in Mexico. Jen wonders what the difference between European French and Quebec French is? Jacob, who is in the chatroom, chimes in to share his experience in Quebec. Jen grew up in Puerto Rico which reminds Chris of a recent Last Week Tonight video on voting rights in U.S. Territories. The Insular Cases are the awkward Supreme Court documents that surmise people in territories under the control of America do not receive all the rights guaranteed in the constitution. Paul is reminded of the videos by CPG Grey, American Empire and The Difference between the United Kingdom, Great Britain and England Explained. Paul explores Jen’s GitHub page and we talk Python. Jacob is looking forward to ES6 Harmony the sixth edition of Javascrip

Jen Montes currently works on the animated show Archer. She started out as an illustrator and now develops tools to assist the artists & animators. We talk about federating the web, cats, electrical engineering and jazz hands. Jen wanted to join us sooner, however the entire team that creates Archer gets together to watch each episode on Thursday nights. We fall into Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt recaps because we all enjoy the jokes. Illustrators build Archer characters in Adobe Illustrator and they animate in After Effects. Jen created the video for the arkOS fundraising campaign. In the chat room, Jacob wonders if the people who make Archer also made Frisky Dingo. Adam Reed & Matt Thompson are the minds behind Frisky Dingo, Sealab 2021 and Archer. Chris and Jen have both listened to the Nerdist Writer’s Panel podcast about Archer. Growing up Jen had a rad Tandy computer. Jen learned Electrical Engineering at the University of Puerto Rico, was accepted to the Georgia Tech PHD robotics program a

    22/05/2015 Duração: 01h07min

Chris is on the road interviewing students in the Master of Digital Media program at The Centre for Digital Media in Vancouver. In addition to the school and projects, we discuss how technology has changed the concept of ownership and we collectively miss the days of buying physical media. Armin Mortazavi stuck around from part one as we chatted with Carolyn Fung and Marina Lúcio. Carolyn was part of the True North team which put together 2 interactive experiences for the Vancouver Maritime Museum. Marina and team Maneki Neko developed a game for a company that we cannot disclose. Read more by clicking the team name. Chris wonders if there’s a cheat code to get the Miami Vice speed boat in the museum simulator. Armin shares that there are lots of cell phone cheats in Grand Theft Auto. All three guests discuss the program at the CDM. Collaboration, even between student teams is a huge part of the school. In contrast, Marina shares that her team’s client was on the other side of the world communi

  • Crock Pot Power Rangers

    17/04/2015 Duração: 01h38s

Welcome to part two of the conversation with Alan Henry of Lifehacker. He shares some kitchen advice and his joy of traveling to various Gawker Media hubs. You’ll learn that anime has a flavor for everyone and Spider-Man has a giant mech. Why is LeVar Burton in the Cameo “Word Up” video? A young Gilbert Gottfried has the “Gas Face” and child-like Penn & Teller get “Tricky”. Alan says you need to have a great chef’s knife in the kitchen. Chris thinks we should probably know how to use it as well. The under used item in your kitchen may be your broiler. Save some counter space and ditch the toaster oven. Alan also loves the slow cooker and recommends the America’s Test Kitchen book Healthy Slow Cooker Revolution. Which slow cooker is for you? America’s Test Kitchen has an equipment reviews for just such a question. Alan enjoys his crunchyroll subscription to fuel his love of anime. Everyone on the show is pro Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Alan

  • Return to Plastic Bohemia

    07/04/2015 Duração: 01h02min

Chris & Paul are joined by Alan Henry to chat about former lives, science, college radio, and Alan’s journey on the way to writing for Lifehacker. Writing articles on his own blogs, Gears and Widgets and The Classy Geek, eventually led to someone saying, “Hey Alan, you should write for us and we’ll pay you!” Alan put together the science guidelines at Lifehacker. How I Work is a useful series on Lifehacker to learn some excellent tips from people in different fields. You can even learn more about Alan and how he works. An old blog of Chris’ with very bad jpegs about Canadian internet shopping. Alan suggested NCIX for Canadian internet shoppers. Win for Canuck listeners! Chris thought he was going to stay in a Radisson Hotel, not the town of Radisson. (It looked much scarier in the dark of 1am.) Alan is now experimenting with Zipcar and Car2Go services. Edmonton finally has a car sharing service, Pogo. Alan loves the DC circulator bus. Spaces or no Spaces? Headphone roll

  • Jil with One L

    31/03/2015 Duração: 01h04min

A production coordinator from Hollywood, Jil Szewski talks to Paul and Chris about working shows, unions, the long hours, and practical jokes on imdb. Chris has learned “What do you do?” is a bad question thanks to reading our last guest, Nicole Bélanger. Jil is currently working on Whose Line Is It, Anyway? (Content not available in Canada, peep this instead.) GVSU Alumni reunion for those cats interested. Experimental film featuring bug parts, Mothlight. You can probably find it on Youtube. Maya Deren’s rad experimental film, Meshes of the Afternoon. Again, you can probably find it on Youtube. Jil had the awkward task of finding Christmas decorations in the summer when she worked on A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas. We learn that web series are very big right now in Hollywood. Chris recommends Chef, but Jil who worked on the film, warns that it will make you very hungry. Paul is currently watching Arrow and The 100. Chris is watching Helix, Supernatural, 12 Monkeys and he’s

  • Actually a Decepticon

    10/03/2015 Duração: 59min

As our podcast enters its 3rd year, Saturday Night Live celebrates its 40th year. Paul & Chris discuss Raspberry Pi projects, SNL, and regional film distribution. Hey look! The Raspberry Pi 2 is out. Corrections: It’s a quad core. arkOS is a slick way to host your own photos, sites and more. Raspberry Pi 2 benchmarks. Chris is hoping to experiment with RetroPie on his RPi(Raspberry Pi). Raspian is the original OS developed for the RPi. Chris’ new thumb drive looks like Ravage. Paul is using XBian on his RPi to stream films & media to his TV. XBian supports AirPlay and Chromecast. It also supports BTSync. Subsonic and MPD are server-side applications to stream your music from home. Did Chris say Jeena is from Germany? Oops. Sorry, sir! Chris wants to replace his Melting iMac with a new RPi 2. Are we talking Doctor Who again? Nope. The spinoff, Torchwood. Where does “pony up” come from? Join us on Thursday evenings in the chatroom. You can find it on the live page or using I

  • Darmok & Heat Vision at the Hyperloop

    03/03/2015 Duração: 44min

Chris & Paul are left to their own devices, whatever that means. The two share what they did on the break between seasons and discuss Gene Roddenberry & Dan Harmon shows. Chris promotes his made-up holiday Someday if February, the 3rd Saturday in February in which you prioritize something from your Someday list instead of your To-do list. Built on the Tent protocol which places your data in your control rather than a service, Cupcake.io is a twitter-like place for conversation that Chris enjoys using. Paul talks about his involvement in West Michigan’s Online Cooperative and his exit from version two, West Michigan FarmLink. Pay someone else to do your chores? Check out TaskRabbit. Be good. Don’t make waves. There was a new Venture Bros special recently that you may be able to watch here for a limited time (and if you’re lucky enough to be surfing from the States). Speaking of cartoons, Chris says you should check out Rick & Morty if you are a fan of Community. What the heck i

  • The Busy Trap

    24/02/2015 Duração: 01h12min

Season 3 begins with the talented and inspiring Nicole Belanger. We discuss the power of stories, the glorification of busy and the lack of diversity in our films, books and entertainment in general. Don’t be mean to your stories! Nicole basically tells us we’re all too hard on ourselves. Chris agrees, citing the stories featured on Radiolab and This American Life. Nicole tells us that she misses writing because lately she’s been updating her website instead of sharing. Check out the new nicole-belanger.com and add it to your reading list. Nicole doesn’t want a work-life balance. She believes in a work-life blend. Stop glorifying that you’re so busy that you don’t have time to sleep? You’re not a martyr, it’s bad for business. Nicole says she was born and raised in Ottawa when Chris accuses her of being a British Columbian. Of course, Chris & Nicole won’t say anything disparaging about B.C. Chris digs Kelowna and Nicole really enjoyed time in Victor
