    10/08/2014 Duração: 57min

Last week’s guest, Jacob Cook sticks around for another show. You know what that means, quiz time! Jacob is the Mad Max of the Information Highway, who supports open source and decentralization with his amazing projects. Keep reading or listen for more on our guest from Montreal! Chris is inspired by Jacob’s passion for his projects, arkOS and CitizenWeb Project so he asks the tough questions, what’s in Jacob’s future? And, the old man question, what about retirement? Fearing the loss of Net Neutrality and crying in his toque, Chris wonders if Jacob has used any of the mesh networks that are popping up. For example, Hyperboria which is part of Project Meshnet. By the way, you should probably click that Net Neutrality link above. John Oliver will have you in tears. Check out GNU Social or use Quitter to check out a decentralized social network. It’s just as amazing as Twitter. Have a look at Diaspora as well. Paul & Jacob geek out about VPS providers, DigitalOcean and Linod

  • My Deathstar is Real Player

    02/08/2014 Duração: 01h03min

This episode we chat with Jacob Cook who puts the Montreal in Montreal Sauce as he was actually in the city at the time of the recording. Jacob is the handsome brain behind arkOS and CitizenWeb Project. We talk the importance of open source, crowd funding and Big Brother’s sneaky mistress, Big Data. Jacob occasionally uses Tor so obviously he’s under surveillance by the NSA. Jacob suggests an open source real-time communications alternative Talky.io, which is based on the open WebRTC. Google says Hangouts will only support Chrome. Chris grumbles while Jacob warns it is only the beginning. He cites Google dropping the open XMMP protocol which has affected Chris in Canada land. Jacob shares a review on his new Jolla phone. The other alternatives are BlackPhone or the Android ROM Replicant. We discuss the evolution of developers from Nick Burns computer nerd to savvy designers & entrepreneurs building user friendly software and apps. Ease of use trumps privacy concerns every time. Thus, Jacob

    25/07/2014 Duração: 01h21min

Montreal Sauce is not recommended by any number out of any other number of doctors. Paul and Chris discuss the previous episode with Justin Hall. Chris suggests the podcast, Supercharged by Adam Dachis and Len Peralta’s Geek a Week. Chris is using Podcast Addict on Android to catch podcasts, which he likes because it has Chromecast support. Paul has used Downcast and Castro on the iPhone for podcasts. Not released as of this recording, though, is his new favorite Overcast. Paul wants to be at podcast zero, like inbox zero. Thus, he shies away from the Nerdist network because they release new episodes daily! Paul is unsure about SoundCloud as he’s worried about losing the rights to his audio. (Though it seems he wouldn’t.) Chris empathizes, which is why he’s never posted his videos on Youtube. Chris is mad as a sleepy diabetic can be about filmmakers using Standard Definition instead of black & white to indicate something happened in the past. Recently, he witnessed this in The G

  • Justin Hall

    18/07/2014 Duração: 01h13min

Justin Hall joins the show to talk about sharing our lives on the web. Others may know Justin from his legendary site links.net, various publications he has worked for or The Nethernet. Justin currently produces thought provoking videos as “The Justin Hall Show” that you can find on Youtube. Better yet, you can stay up to date & contribute to his work via the awesome service Patreon. In true Montreal Sauce fashion, we jump into conversation and don’t get around to introducing Justin until 49 minutes into the show. Being an amazing guest, Justin interviews us just as much as we interview him. We all quickly agree that we have no idea if the 300 sequel Rise of an Empire is historically accurate, but Wikipedia is the way to find out. Justin encourages us to edit, not just lurk on the free encyclopedia. Chris pledges allegiance to After Effects comparing it to a tool rather than service or box of filters like Instagram. Similarly, this week Chris shares that the way we interact with our p

  • Daredevil? Ugh. Pfft.

    11/07/2014 Duração: 01h11min

Tina (Twitter, Website) joins us again to talk Orphan Black. We all love Helena. Though, Orphan Black isn’t a BBC show, Chris still included it in his blog, Why You Should Be Watching Brit TV Shows. Tina does foley of the Montreal Sauce splat when we talk Ben Affleck in Daredevil. The only clip that shows the Affleck scene Chris shares is from Cinema Sins. What a lovely coincidence. Chris says he was unimpressed with Marvel’s wanna be anime style animated films. Marvel’s Avengers Confidential: Black Widow & Punisher and Iron Man: Rise of Technovore. Paul & Tina keep attempting to watch Sherlock Holmes 2: A Game of Shadows. Chris has yet to catch up with OITNB, but Tina & Paul just finished the new season of Orange is the New Black. Torchwood continues to torture Chris who gets revenge by confusing Mekhi Phifer with Omar Epps. Paul sings the chorus of Rockwell’s jam, Somebody’s Watching Me. Looking for a calendar to share across devices without being spied on by Big

  • Sandals In The Masturbatorium

    01/07/2014 Duração: 56min

This week we’re joined by Paul’s wife Tina (Twitter, Website) & we talk body functions, children and Weight Watchers. While Tina & Chris discuss medication side effects, Chris admits his sugar substitutes don’t rise to the occasion of baking. Paul asks Chris about his new avatar which was created by Len Peralta. You can get your own from FlipFace.me and check out Len’s podcast, Geek a Week. Oops, the conversation boiled down to arkOS, Raspberry Pi and SeaFile yet again. Troubles with installing beta software leads to lots of learning. Chris has learned much about Linux and sampled a few distros. Yet, he still has much more to learn. OpenBox is the amazing desktop environment/windows management for linux that has won Chris’ heart. Macbook battery cycling is supposedly serious business if you want your battery to last. A lesson learned the hard way. Weight Watchers points will not allow you to purchase a Behringer Ultragain Pro Mic2200. Fortunately, Paul was able to get

  • I Divulged

    17/06/2014 Duração: 01h12min

Resuming our half-and-half episode format, it’s Season 2, Episode 6. Chris talks about a previous show with Jonah, where he learned about Tom Cruise’s middle tooth! Paul thinks Tom Cruise’s middle tooth could be the Silence. Chris recommends Teeth if you’re into… you know what, don’t watch this. Paul says his children are really enjoying the Hopscotch and Paper apps on the iPad. Spellbounders is a iPad game recommended by a listener in the chat room. Chris is using Privacy Badger, a plugin for browsers from the EFF that blocks ad trackers. Want to chat without cell service? Check out FireChat. ProtonMail boasts security and encryption for the average user. It’s an email service started by some CERN scientists. We talk iMessage difficulties. Chris uses FolderSync to sync his photos with OwnCloud. While Paul used ScannerPro to copy receipts to OwnCloud. Is NFC coming to Apple? Rumor! Chris admits he’s a closet reality show fan because he watches MasterChef.

It’s time to get back on the Sauce. This week, we’re back to Paul and Chris, Canadiéno-e-Americáno. Chris vents about using PixPlant, an app to make seamless textures and maps. These Futurama references to the reptilian space Pope & zombie Jesus are so quick it will take the links longer to load than to play. play. SeaFile is a self-hosted drobox-like service that Paul is trying out because OwnCloud is a bit slow on the Raspberry Pi. Turn your Raspberry Pi into a router? Why not, Chris is already pushing his routers with the open source dd-wrt installed on them. Paul tells Chris not to worry about his routers because Samba sharing isn’t the greatest anyway. As night falls in the Midwest, Paul’s picture fades to black in Skype which brings back memories of bad school portraits to Chris. Remember those reflection style portraits? Chris wonders why anyone would buy a Macbook Air, but Paul thinks mobility is the reason. Who wants to lug around a 17 inch laptop these days? Here̵

Once again, Jonah Bailey pops in as our guest. He is a designer, comic book fan, and Trekkie. You can find him @jonahbailey on twitter or at his own site jonahbailey.com. Montreal Sauce Pro Tip: Don’t Go to Kansas and Say That Chris randomly quizes Jonah & Paul because that’s what classy radio shows do. Who will win the coveted prize of choosing a tattoo for our imaginary sound engineer? One of the quiz questions featured this Pauly Shore music video. Another Paul de Leeuw hits on someone and gives out his phone number during a live broadcast. The binary joke from Futurama in Spanish because our interns are lazy. Special thanks to @peakwinter from #arkOS for the assist with an additional trivia question live from our chat room. Despecialized Star Wars Jonah watches the Harmy Star Wars Despecialized Edition.

  • Not In My Captain America

Jonah Bailey is a designer, comic book fan and our guest this episode. You can find him on twitter, @jonahbailey or at his own site jonahbailey.com. (Which, he admits, is sorely in need of an update. Don’t go there. WHY AM I EVEN LINKING THIS?) We discuss Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Jonah reminds us that Chris Evans is both Captain America and Johnny Storm from Fantastic Four films. How does that work? Maybe like this? DC comics did a reboot of all their characters in the DC universe and Jonah recommends you take a look. The New 52. A live listener in the chat room, peakwinter reminds us that Chris Evans was also in Not Another Teen Movie. The Bucky Clause says nobody in comics stays dead except for 3 ch

  • I Emoted

    16/05/2014 Duração: 01h07min

In episode 2 we talk security. Forget password services and secure websites, you need Liam Neeson. Paul hacks apart Star Wars with a machete on air. Chris is looking at Chromebooks for his wife. Paul’s iMac has a recall because of… graphics card. It all sounds too familiar to Chris. Chris has realized that his phone contains a lot of delicate information and maybe it is time to put a password on it. Check how secure your password is here. Paul’s phone confirms he’s been doing this for a while as we hear the lock sound during the show. Advice from a web comic for password security? Put a password following this advice in the link above. Crazy secure, but hard to remember. The idea of Last Pass is to only remember one password. This web service will store all your other passwords so you don’t have to recall them. Prior to Last Pass emerging, Chris purchased 1Password to store passwords. Paul is the Computer Who Wore Tennis Shoes so he remembers all his passwords. Speaking of

Welcome back to the Sauce. Glad you fell off the wagon. Paul & Chris were on hiatus globetrotting on the hunt for crystal skulls. Chris learned all about the crystal skulls thanks to the Stuff You Should Know Podcast via this episode. Paul learned about the crystal skulls from the 4th Indiana Jones movie which he’s trying to forget.
