Musculoskeletal Biomechanics in Critical Care Part 2: A Case Study
27/08/2016 Duração: 50minMusculoskeletal Biomechanics in Critical Care Part 2: A Case Study The First Decision In this episode, we discuss a special patient's medical care during a recent hospitalization focusing on the medical decisions and the role of musculoskeletal biomechanics. We question why the musculoskeletal system is not considered more during hospital admissions. Finally, we explore the negative effects of bed rest and its use in all but rare circumstances. Specifically, the effects of bed rest in this case are compared to a review of medical research. Bed rest has a long list of negative of effects, however we focus specifically on blood clots. We hope this information is helpful for hospital administrators, medical professionals, patients and their family members. References and Resources The profound negative effects of bed rest in the Dallas bed rest study Duration of bed rest in the ICU was the single risk factor that was consistently associated with muscle weakn

Musculoskeletal Biomechanics in Critical Care Part 1: Optimizing Physical Therapists in the ICU - Management Model
02/07/2016 Duração: 40minOptimizing Physical Therapists in the ICU: Management Model Interview with Kyle Ridgeway DPT of University of Colorado Hospital Kyle Ridgeway is the coordinator of a quality improvement project in the medical ICU at the University of Colorado Hospital. He answers questions regarding his project and discusses the rationale of physical therapists in the ICU. Patients who are critically ill, especially those that require mechanical ventilation, exhibit profound sequelae. Acutely, patients are at risk for development of weakness, nerve and muscle impairment, and delirium as well as other multi-system complications. (bed sores, contractures, DVTs, etc). Long term physical, functional, neurocognitve, and psychological outcomes are poor. Impairments in strength, function, and inability to return to work can persist for years after hospital discharge. Early physical therapy, including active mobilization, is safe and feasible within 24 to 48 hours of ICU admission. Such an approach results in improved sh

The Crazy Leopard's Movement
28/05/2016 Duração: 45minThe Crazy Leopard's Movement Science or Gurus We address a recent Facebook post related to Physical Therapists becoming 'movement experts'. Physical Therapists must choose between Science or Gurus. Original Question from a recent DPT Graduate: "Alright people, I have a confession: I am a 3rd year PT student and no where close to being a "movement expert." However, I am genuinely interested in improving this portion of my clinical skills. I honestly don't know proper form with a number of exercises and really struggle to watch someone move and say they probably have "x deficit " wrong with them. Could anyone suggest a good text for improving my foundation in this area? I have been considering "Movement" by Gray Cook or "Supple Leopard" by Kelly Starrett. I've read the Amazon reviews but would much prefer feedback from you guys. Any thoughts on either of those or other texts you all would suggest? Oh, and I can't afford an SFMA course at this time but am definitely considering it after graduation."

The Human Movement System Part 2: The Human Movement System and the Role of the Physical Therapist - Response to Feedback
12/04/2016 Duração: 01h11minThe Human Movement System and the Role of the Physical Therapist Response to Feedback The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) has proposed "The Human Movement System" as the primary identity of the physical therapist and the defining construct of the profession. We discussed this in the previous podcast. Sharon Dunn PT, PhD, President of the APTA, commented on our previous podcast while discussing the Human Movement System on Healthy, Wealthy and Smart - Episode 203 with Karen Litzy. The panel responds to this and other feedback received from the physical therapist community regarding the first podcast on the Human Movement System. Furthermore, our panel examines Conatus Athletics' claim : "The primary medical role, clinical foundation, and educational foundation of the Physical Therapist is Musculoskeletal Biomechanics and Physical Therapy subspecialties and modalities are a result of this foundation." Listed below is an initial set of questions we have yet to have answered

The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) has proposed "The Human Movement System" as the primary identity of the physical therapist and the defining construct of the profession. In December of 2015, Karen Litzy interviewed Dr. Christopher Powers of The University of Southern California and explored the motivation and justification of "The Human Movement System". In this podcast Matt Sremba DPT, Kyle Ridgeway DPT, Paul Mitalski and Adam Van Cleave analyze the definition and implications of the Human Movement System as defined by the APTA.
