Episódios

  • Tati and James Charles Youtuber Drama, Wine Country, Twilight Zone and Hostiles

    12/05/2019 Duração: 42min

This Youtube drama is crazy! (Fast-forward to the 16:30 minute mark for Wine Country.) Tati and James Charles are involved in a big blow-up going on in REAL TIME. Even if you never watch Youtube, the reality of how quickly people can retaliate is interesting. Netflix has just released Wine Country with Maya Rudolph and Amy Poehler...but is it any good? What IS good is the latest iteration of the Twilight Zone with Jordan Peele. Another podcast, another Christian Bale movie: The Hostiles. He disappears into this role, also starring a luminous and raw Rosamund Pike.

  • Wonder Woman is on Netflix but Dark Knight Rises is Better, Toast of London is So Funny, Colette is a Dream

    05/05/2019 Duração: 44min

Wonder Woman is on Netflix and Gal Gadot is everything, but sadly the story is not. By comparison, the other DC movie Dark Knight Rises (2012) with Christian Bale is such an outstanding action film. Toast of London is a super quirky, very funny new-ish British comedy also on Netflix. Colette with Keira Knightley is a gorgeous movie with an interesting true story behind it. Let us know if you're watching these movies and what you think of them at @helenrac and thanks for listening!

  • Brené Brown's Netflix Special, Free Solo is Amazing, Someone Great is Dreadful, Love Rosie is Dreadful Too

    27/04/2019 Duração: 45min

Helen talks about Brené Brown: The Call to Courage and what this new format means for our culture. Also, Someone Great is such a disappointment despite gorgeous and compelling leads Lakeith Stanfield and Gina Rodriguez. Free Solo is a brilliant, stress-inducing Oscar-winning documentary about an oddball but very watchable climber. Love Rosie with Lily Collins could be a wonderful rom com but it falls flat. • The Perfect Date is Sweet, Losers is a Winner, Black Monday is Smart and Fun

    14/04/2019 Duração: 42min

The world's Netflix boyfriend, Noah Centineo stars in The Perfect Date, and it's a cute rom-com with a formulaic message. (Mentioned article: Alyssa Ashton's The Perfect Date is Missing One Thing.) Losers is a new Netflix sports documentary special with an important twist: the lessons that come from being a loser. Black Monday is a Hulu TV show that's so smart, goofy and funny too, set in the Wall Street 80s before the stock market crash. • Noble Ape and Growing are Great, Eksi Elmalar (Sour Apples) is Sweet, God Knows Where I Am Takes Asks Important Questions About Mental Illness

    06/04/2019 Duração: 46min

Helen has written a new article on Medium about freelancing called "The Starbucks Factor: Apply it to Every Freelance Job You Do." Read it here. Jim Gaffigan's Noble Ape is another funny turn about middle America, and Amy Schumer shines in Growing, both one-hour specials on Netflix. If you've never watched Turkish cinema you should try it! Eksi Elmalar means Sour Apples, a beautiful movie by filmmaker Yilmaz Erdogan. "God Knows Where I Am" is a documentary on Netflix that asks important questions about how we treat and look after people with serious mental illnesses like schizophrenia in our society, and tells a mysterious true life story about a women's preventable death. Find us at @GetYourEyesOn and @HelenRac.

  • The Inventor's Elizabeth Holmes is Creepy, The Madeleine McCann Documentary is Dull, Shrill is So Good

    31/03/2019 Duração: 42min

We start off talking about Helen's Medium article "Why My Lifestyle Journalism Career is (Almost) Dead," (skip ahead to the 10 min mark to miss it). Then onto The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley, featuring the gong show fraud that was Theranos and its creepy leader, Elizabeth Holmes. The new Madeleine McCann documentary on Netflix is terribly dull and a cynical attempt to cash in on the true-crime genre that's popular right now. Last, Shrill on Hulu starring Aidy Bryant is a joy. Thanks for your follows and please give us a rating and review on iTunes. Find us at @GetYourEyesOn and @helenrac.

  • After Life Falls Flat, Queer Eye Season 3 Needs To Pivot, Dawn Wall is Brilliant, and The Good Fight S3 is Back and Sounds Great

    17/03/2019 Duração: 43min

We talk about Luke Perry, a digital sabbath, and address some listener questions in the intro.  Skip ahead to the 12-minute mark as we get into why After Life is good but mostly bad. Queer Eye Season 3: Helen still loves Jonathan Van Ness and Antoni Thirst Trap, but is the show holding up? The Dawn Wall is a gripping documentary about free climbing and so much more on ye olde Netflix. The Good Fight: this is the most stylish sounding show around and now it's in season 3. Contact us at @GetYourEyesOn and @HelenRac. Please leave us a review on itunes if you like the show!

  • Dirty John Will Make Your Blood Boil, Highway Thru Hell Season 7 Is So Canadian, La La Land Didn't Age Well

    09/03/2019 Duração: 43min

Hey everyone! We discuss the elderly gent in Ottawa who refused to dig himself out of his house--all winter long, and also intuitive eating (fast-forward to around the 11 min mark to go straight to Dirty John). Dirty John, the Netflix series, is a chilling cautionary tale for affluent divorcees. Highway Thru Hell is a slice of Canadiana and we love it. La La Land was so hyped when it came out and now it's on Netflix. Did it stand the test of time? We discuss. If you're interested in the Food Psych podcast Helen mentions with Christy Harrison, it's here.

  • Russian Doll is Captivating, Adrift is a Thrill, Why The Pioneer Woman is Not Regressive

    02/03/2019 Duração: 47min

One of our favourite new Netflix series is Russian Doll. (Heads up: Light spoilers throughout.) Why we're loving the conceit, the moral lesson and the attitude delivered in this Groundhog Day-style series. Adrift is a fantastic survival movie if that's your jam. We also get into The Pioneer Woman, ranch living and why this food show is one of our favourites. Catch us on @GetYourEyesOn and @HelenRac, we'd love to hear from you!

  • Dating Around is a Must-Watch, Bundy is Exploitative but Interesting For Journalists, Broad City S5 Retains its Charm

    17/02/2019 Duração: 45min

Have you been watching Dating Around? Niall and Helen discuss Leonard, Luke and Gurki's episodes in depth. Niall has been watching Bundy and explains why he likes the true crime genre and what, if any, redeeming factors this documentary has to offer. Ilana and Abbi are back in season 5, the last season of Broad City. Do these auteurs reach the comic heights of their initial seasons? We'll discuss. Thank you everyone for listening and subscribing. Please let us know what you think of these shows, we want to hear from you! Tweet us at @helenrac and @getyoureyeson.

  • You on Netflix is Addictive, One Day At A Time S3 is Awesome, Leap Year is Charming, Larry Crowne is Sweet

    10/02/2019 Duração: 46min

What we're watching: The psychological thriller You is totally bingeable. It stalled when it was on Lifetime Network, but got new legs on Netflix. One Day At a Time is so good and Rita Moreno is a goddess. Leap Year with Matthew Goode and Amy Adams is a charming delight. Larry Crowne with Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts is amazing too. What do you think? Reach us at @GetYourEyesOn and @helenrac. Thanks for listening!

  • Fyre On Netflix is Pure Schadenfreude, Conan Without Borders Is A Laugh, True Detective Season 1 Is Mesmerizing

    26/01/2019 Duração: 41min

We delve into Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened (Netflix). This is a documentary that will delight those who remember the crazy tweets that came out of the failed festival in 2017. Conan Without Borders is good comedy with a big childish streak. True Detective Season 1 is appealing, years later, but very gratuitous.

  • Tidying Up With Marie Kondo's Appeal, Friends From College Season Two, St. Elmo's Fire Is A Must-Watch

    19/01/2019 Duração: 44min

Tidying Up With Marie Kondo has sparked a storm, but are the accolades and jabs deserved? Friends From College Season 2 is out on Netflix, and we love it. Also: travel with us back to the 1980s and enjoy the nostalgia trip that is St. Elmo's Fire. What are you watching? Tweet us your thoughts: @helenrac or @getyoureyeson.

  • Does Bandersnatch Live Up To The Twitter Hype? The Staircase Is Thrilling, Ellen DeGeneres' Special Is Good, Watch Bad Santa, Big Mouth Is Meh

    30/12/2018 Duração: 46min

Everyone (according to Twitter) is watching Netflix's latest Black Mirror episode: the groundbreaking Choose Your Own Adventure thriller Bandersnatch. We chose our own adventure and here's what we thought of it. Niall has been enthralled with The Staircase, Helen has watched Ellen DeGeneres' new comedy special. Bad Santa is the perfect antidote to the Hallmark Holiday movies that have taken over the season. Lastly: Netflix's Big Mouth. Anyone watching this and loving it? Helen thinks it might be overrated.

  • Brokeback Mountain Is STILL So Good, It Happened One Night Is The First Rom Com, Russel Brand's New Netflix Special, Home Alone Is The Best

    17/12/2018 Duração: 47min

We dive deep into Brokeback Mountain, the gorgeous Ang Lee-directed 2005 movie that is unbelievably poignant. Niall says that It Happened One Night is the very first romantic comedy, starring Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert. Russell Brand's Netflix standup comedy earns a thumbs down but hey, there's always that 80s classic, Home Alone to enjoy! Tweet us at @GetYourEyesOn

  • Love Actually Versus The Holiday: Christmas Movie Face Off

    08/12/2018 Duração: 44min

Which do you like better, Love Actually by Richard Curtis or The Holiday from Nancy Meyer? We have LOTS of opinions and we air them all out on this special episode where we compare and contrast these holiday instant classics. Love our opinions or hate them? Let us know at @GetYourEyesOn and @helenrac.

  • The Kominsky Method Is Just OK, Christmas Everlasting and Holiday Calendar Are Great, In The Bedroom Is Dark, American Woman Is Pure 70s Nostalgia

    01/12/2018 Duração: 41min

The Kominsky Method stars Michael Douglas and it's worth watching (if you're ancient). Hallmark Christmas movies are having a real moment this season, two of the best include Christmas Everlasting and The Holiday Calendar. All Hail Queen Patti LaBelle! She's in two of our picks this week. In The Bedroom with Sissy Spacek is grim but moving. American Woman from Kyle Richards (née Real Housewives of Beverly Hills) is such fun 70s nostalgia. Lots of cigarettes, boat-cars, wide lapels and polyester, people.

  • Bridget Jones's Baby, Broadchurch, Manchester By Sea

    13/11/2018 Duração: 42min

Join us this week as we discuss Bridget Jones's Baby (now on Netflix) and Renee Zellweger, Colin Firth and the gang, Broadchurch with the 10th Dr. Who, David Tennant (and sound issues. Apologies! We had to switch rooms due to tech difficulties at the 30.5 minute mark). Is Manchester By Sea's legacy tainted by Casey Affleck's mess? We discuss. Get in touch with us at @GetYourEyesOn on Twitter.

  • Elite Is a Sexy Mess, Voyeur's Motel Tarnishes Gay Talese, Gremlins Is A Delight, The Missing Is So Dark

    06/11/2018 Duração: 42min

Elite is an instant Netflix hit, and here's why the sexy murder mystery works but also has some cringe-worthy scenes. The Voyeur's Motel has tarnished writer Gay Talese's legacy (and here is the Toronto Life article Helen mentions called "Inside The Mind Of A Voyeur.") After all these years, the silly-scary Gremlins is such a delight and everyone should watch it. The Missing's strong first season probes some super-dark territory (missing children), watch if you dare. Find us at @GetYourEyesOn and @HelenRac.

  • Bodyguard Is Hot Until It's Not, Fargo Season 3 Is OK, Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Is Not Great, In The Dark Podcast Is Captivating

    01/11/2018 Duração: 45min

Bodyguard (not to be confused with the opus from Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner) is a tight political thriller Helen has mixed but ultimately approving feelings for, Fargo Season 3 is pretty good according to Niall (but Season 1 is better.) Amazon Prime tricked us into subscribing! So Helen watched Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. What's all the hype about? In The Dark podcast that's in the vein of Serial and S-Town is great, according to Niall. Thanks for listening everyone, catch us on Twitter: @GetYourEyesOn and @HelenRac.
