There is an expression which says that "Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely." Leaders face temptations and since we are all leaders in one sense or another we face temptations of all kinds. Nehemiah again is no exception. Had he followed in the footsteps of his predecessors he too would have fallen to temptation. Nehemiah chooses instead to honour God and to honour those whom he was called to lead. Leaders not only face opposition from the outside but many times must deal with conflict from the inside. Nehemiah's task of rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem was not exempt from conflict. He saw that some of the people were not being treated as God would have intended. What did Nehemiah do to restore equity among those working on this project? The Old Testament gives us a view of life before Christ. When the people sinned God called them on their sin and they were separated from God. When Jesus came he brought grace and truth. Jesus, following God's lead speaks the truth to us in love when we sin but instead of separation from God we are shown grace which includes forgiveness. Grace however gives us so much more. Grace gives us the ability to love people who may not love us back...that is the essence of grace...being given something we don't deserve. Pentecost represents the day the church was born and sent out to share the good news. A feast and a filling for all generations of believers. We live in the abundance of God's love and provision. We serve others with power from on high. We neglect no one-and many come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. The Spirit leads us and we go from Jerusalem, to Judea, to Samaria, and to the ends of the Earth. This good news is for ALL who believe. Every people, tribe, and tongue.
