  • Racism: Is It in You or Your World?

    16/12/2014 Duração: 55min

With the latest killings of unarmed black men by white police officers, lots of people are talking about race and racism, and many are taking sides. Instead of reacting and judging, let’s see what we can learn. Racism: the tendency to assume characteristics of a person based on his or her race. In other words, I see a white man, and I assume certain things. I see a black man, and I assume others. And so on. What does racism have to do with me? Have I suffered from racism? Do I recognize racism in myself? Have I done stupid things to try to prove I’m not racist? What were the attitudes about race in my family and my world? How have they impacted me? Whichever side we’re on, it’s easy to condemn others. But how many of us are willing to take a hard look at ourselves and see how racism has affected us and our lives. Join us for an honest conversation. Let’s look deeply into racism and start healing. Tune in, call in, and join the post-show forum (link on right). Let tragedy feed growth.

  • The Christmas Gift Challenge: What Do YOU Need & How to Give It to Yourself!

    09/12/2014 Duração: 56min

Whether or not you believe in Christmas as a religious holiday, you’re surrounded by gift-giving madness at this time of year. Perhaps you’re caught up in it yourself. But have you asked yourself: What do I really need this holiday season and how can I give it to myself? Most of us don’t know what we need, or if we do, we don’t have a clue as to how to meet those needs. In fact, we often mistakenly use THINGS to try to meet our inner needs, and that just leads to more frustration. Or we try to manipulate others to meet our needs when we have to meet them ourselves. So let’s take on the InsideOut Christmas challenge: Let’s identify some inner need and then figure out how to go for it. If you’re intrigued, tune in. Better yet, call in and let host Beth Green help you identify what you really need and how you can give it to yourself. Give yourself the gift of InsideOut for Christmas. And after the show, gift yourself with our post-show forum (see the link on the right side of host page).

  • What Secrets Are You Keeping – from Others or Even from Yourself?

    02/12/2014 Duração: 56min

Most of us are keeping something secret – a thought, a feeling or a behavior. And if we’re hiding something from ourselves or others, we lose intimacy and the chance to get help if we need it. On this show we ask the questions: What are our secrets – even from ourselves – why do we keep them, and what’s the consequence to us and our relationships? If you think you’re not keeping any secrets, look again. Isn’t there anything you’re secretly thinking, feeling or doing in relation to a mate, boss, business partner or friend? What’s the real motive? Here’s a chance to reveal a secret and you can even do it anonymously. Call in, make up a name and spill the beans. Or better yet, tell us who you are and let it out. Or just listen as others share the secrets they’ve been keeping and see if you identify. Whether your secret is big – such as, I’m gay – or seemingly small – such as I hate that dress – secrets make us feel more alone and can even make us sick. Tune in and see if you don’t agree.

  • Illness: Myths & Mayhem

    25/11/2014 Duração: 55min

Some of us don’t even want to use the word illness. We have to talk about health. But we ALL experience illness – from mild to severe; from passing to chronic. And our attitude toward it can dramatically impact our lives. In fact, it can sometimes mean the difference between life and death. So let’s talk about illness and how we treat it. On this episode of InsideOut, we’ll ask you: How was illness treated in your family of origin? How is it treated in your current family or culture? Do you deny it? Worship it? Exploit it? Do you accept it in yourself but not in others or vice versa? Why? Where did you get your attitudes? What are you teaching your children? Does your attitude help or hurt the physical or mental health of yourself and those around you? Don’t miss this opportunity to talk about illness, some myths about it and the mayhem those myths can create. Tune in, call in and ask Beth’s intuitively-guided help. And join our post-show forum (see link) to continue the conversation.

  • Are We a Blessing or a Curse? Is Humanity Worth Saving?

    18/11/2014 Duração: 56min

Our tongues may be somewhat in our cheeks, but we think this is a legitimate question. From our climate change panel of November 11, we saw that we can still save ourselves. There are solutions if we act now. But is humanity worth saving? Let’s look at the record. We haven’t exactly been a blessing to the planet: rape of the land, pollution, extinction of other animals and deforestation. We haven’t always even helped ourselves either. We can boast of creating war, antibiotic-resistant germs, diet-caused illnesses, violence and genocide. Then there’s the oppression of women, abuse of children, exploitation of men, veterans with needs unmet, nursing home atrocities, masses of traumatized refugees, persistent slavery, poverty, hunger, drug and alcoholic addiction, abuse of animals, greed and stress galore. So if we could make ourselves extinct with climate change, why fight it? Is the humanity worth saving? What do you think? Tune in, call in, ask Beth Green and tell us what you think.

  • What Did You Hope for as a Child? Did You Try to Achieve It? What’s the Result?

    04/11/2014 Duração: 56min

Think back to yourself as a child. What did you want for your future? Did you hope for achievements, such as money, career, marriage or kids? Were you striving for a feeling, such as acceptance or love? Were you hoping to help the world or striving to be important? Did you pursue your dream? How did you pursue it? Did you succeed? If you’ve achieved your dream, are you glad you did? If you haven’t, did you try something else or just give up? In this episode of InsideOut, we’re taking a journey of self-exploration where we acknowledge what we hoped to experience in life, review whether or not we tried to achieve it and acknowledge what have been the results of our efforts. Expect some surprises and commit to making changes, if needed. Perhaps our dreams weren’t right for us to start with, and it’s time for a different perspective. Or maybe our dreams were right, but the path to achieve them was flawed. Maybe it’s time for a tune up. Let’s ask Beth Green. Tune in, call in and find out.

  • God, The Secret & Controlling Reality: How Can We Live WITH Reality Instead?

    28/10/2014 Duração: 57min

Life is tough for most of us. My family was poor and we lacked necessities. Or my parents had money, but mom couldn’t be bothered with a child. Or Dad worked endless hours and snorted cocaine. Or my parents divorced and hated each other. Or I grew up in a violent neighborhood, or I was raped or molested, or I was born with a speech defect, or my husband is an alcoholic, or I have cancer. Everyone has a story of real suffering, even those who don’t admit it. So it’s natural that we don’t really trust life, which means we don’t really trust God. And who would blame us for looking for ways to control reality? For many spiritual people, the craving for control has shown up in beliefs such as the “Secret” or other versions of manifestation consciousness. In this show, we’re going to take a hard look at the Secret and related beliefs, we’ll discuss what’s good about them, and we’ll acknowledge what’s damaging. And then we’ll look at the alternative, which is living with reality. Join us!

  • Being Quiet Can Feel Uncomfortable! Turn It into an Opportunity for Peace.

    21/10/2014 Duração: 56min

In an earlier show, we talked about why it can be hard for us to sit still and how we use activity to block our feelings – both emotional and physical. On the emotional side, we went deep and discovered feelings that could compel us toward big changes. But we also discovered that silence brought us into connection with our bodies and our bodies’ pain, anxiety and distress. And we started to discuss how paying attention to those feelings could also compel us to question our livelihood, lifestyle or life choices. Quiet can feel threatening! But it can also be divine. In this show we will continue the conversation. Plus we will share a different experience of stillness, transformed from a threat into an opportunity for peace, the peace we need to face our pain, our anxiety and our scary choices. Even if peace seems like an impossible goal, give yourself this chance. Tune in, call in or use the podcast. As usual, Beth will guide us through her insight, wisdom and connection to the divine.

  • Why Are We Going Back to War? Do We Know What We’re Doing?

    14/10/2014 Duração: 56min

Most everyone is sickened by the Islamic State and its gruesome actions. But do we have any idea what caused it or what to do about it? Do you? Are you up in arms, calling for action without knowing what will work? Or are you acquiescing to military action but trying not to think about it? Do you have more opinions than information? Do you feel upset and fearful of reprisals? Do you know the difference between Islam and the people who say they represent it? What are the causes of this kind of violence anyway? Does violence end violence? If you are ready to confront these questions, tune into our show. Once again, we will welcome Prof. Jim Gelvin of UCLA, who will help us with the facts. And this time we’ll look at the statements and response of Muslims, responses to IS and responses to our own military actions. We may also have a last-minute guest. So tune in and be surprised. War is not a game. So let’s take an hour to tone down the rhetoric and tune up our information and awareness.

  • Are You Uncomfortable With Quiet? Why? And What Can We Do About It

    07/10/2014 Duração: 56min

The New York Times recently reported that people, men in particular, would prefer to give themselves an electric shock than to sit in silence and have nothing to do but think or feel. In 11 experiments involving more than 700 people, the majority of participants reported that they found it unpleasant to be alone in a room with their thoughts for just 6 to 15 minutes. So are you super-busy? Is ALL your activity really necessary – running here and there, texting while driving, multitasking, and so on – or do you manufacture stuff to do in order to distract yourself from yourself? It seems that most of us can’t handle the anxiety and negative thoughts we encounter when we’re still. Yet studies suggest that quiet time helps us be better problem-solvers. And when we let ourselves feel our feelings, we can do something about them. So let’s take get more comfortable with ourselves. Tune in, call in and let’s talk about being quiet. Grin. And then join the post-show forum. See link on right.

  • Feeling Other People’s Pain and Learning to Deal with It!

    30/09/2014 Duração: 56min

Host Beth Green has always felt the world’s pain and wanted to do something about it. She’s tried to help but how much has she succeeded? What about you? Have you felt the pain of a parent who wasn’t prepared to raise children but had them anyway, or the pain of a sibling competing with you for love or attention, or the pain of a maiden aunt who felt alone, a cousin who was deformed and isolated, a neighbor who locked herself in the house with a bottle or an insecure teacher mocked by mean kids? Have you felt the pain of the homeless, the mentally ill or those subjected to discrimination or abuse? And when you have felt that pain, what do you tend to do? Shut yourself off and pretend not to notice? Jump in to take on everyone’s fight? Try to fix it? Do you know how to deal with the world’s pain without hurting yourself or others? That’s the topic of this week’s InsideOut. Tune in, call in and let Beth help you find the most productive way to deal with pain you see and feel every day.

  • Do You Rush to Judgment? Why, and How to Stop!

    23/09/2014 Duração: 54min

Do you have a tendency to jump to conclusions with very little evidence but lots of certainty? Most of us do. In fact, the news is full of stories about what we have decided is true about Ray Rice, the Middle East, people with opposing political views and just about everything else. Are our opinions accurate? Have we taken the time to study the situation? Do we have access to all the facts? Where do our opinions come from? Why do we need them? And what mischief do they cause? Because when we rush to judgment, we can do a lot of damage – leap into war, condemn the innocent or ruin the lives of people who are in the public eye doing what many others do in private. Let’s talk about how we rush to judgment and the damage that causes. Let’s talk about why we think we need to have opinions about everything. And let’s talk about how we can learn to pause long enough to get the information we need to be judicious, rather than judgmental. Tune in, call in, share and join our post-show forum.

  • Grounded Spirituality: What It Is and How We Achieve It!

    16/09/2014 Duração: 57min

Have you ever seen someone use spirituality to escape from reality? Do you do that? Like an addiction, spirituality can make us feel high. For a moment we feel elevated above ordinary life and wish we could stay there, but most of us can’t. Instead we crash down into our normal depressed or anxious state as soon as we’re back in everyday life, and that makes us feel ashamed. What about folks who use spirituality to make themselves look superior, pretending they aren’t crabby, petty or anxious like the rest of us, even though they are? Do you do that? Can we embrace spirituality deeply and not get high or puffed up? If we don’t get high, will that stop the crash? Beth Green says yes. And she’ll help you experience sober spirituality, one that is elevating and grounding at the same time. Using spirituality to get high does not ultimately nurture us. Sober spirituality does. Tune in, call in, and let Beth support us all to connect deeply to both our spirit and our feet at the same time.

  • Who Rules Your Life? Is Democracy Scary, and How Can We Make It Better?

    09/09/2014 Duração: 57min

How would you like to have a million strangers decide what you wear each day, what you eat for lunch and who you date? Well democracy is like that – all kinds of strangers telling you who you can marry, whether you can have an abortion, who can carry a gun and whether or not we go to war. Whatever your wishes, in many vital matters you don’t have the deciding vote, and your life can be critically impacted by the beliefs and actions of millions of people you may not trust and can’t control. And now we have even more democracy. We used to have two political parties, a few media outlets and one phone company. Now we have the internet, lots of choices, everyone’s on YouTube, and somebody is advocating for just about everything. Most of us like democracy when we win but think others are idiots when we’re outvoted. Let’s get real about democracy, how we feel about it, how technology is impacting it and what we can do to make it better. Join in! Tune in, call in and join our post-show forum!

  • What Do You Think You CAN'T Do? Is It True that You Can't?

    26/08/2014 Duração: 56min

How often do we pretend we can do something we can’t? Why do we do that? On the other hand, how often do we tell ourselves we CAN’T do something we can? Just think about it. Make a list of all the things you think you can’t do: Learn a computer program, leave a bad relationship, get more exercise, stand up to a bully, fix a toilet, comfort a friend, or face something about you or your life. Now consider each item. Where did you get the idea that you can’t do it? Was it true in the past that you couldn’t? Is it still true? Or is it that you don’t want to risk failure or ridicule? Or you’re faking dependence to puff up someone else or to make yourself feel loved? Or you could do it, but you’re just scared? Or? If you can’t do something, don’t stress over it, and love yourself anyway. But if you might be able to do something, love yourself enough to try. Let’s talk about our “can’ts”. Call in to ask Beth to help you turn your can’t into a can. And join our post-show forum when you CAN!

There’s no usual weather, usual public safety, usual conditions for our kids to grow up in. Our world is changing and we have no say – unless we join with others and take a stand. What really stops us? And what can we do about it? Let’s support each other to get involved and take a stand for things that we believe in. Start by taking a stand with us! 12/08/2014 Duração: 57min

Bury our heads in the sand? Let’s face this challenge together and do three things differently. Let’s get solid information BEFORE we act. Let’s talk honestly about our feelings – guilt, fear, anger – so we can face the latest challenges calmly, knowledgeably and courageously. Let’s get involved.
