Bjorn joins us to talk about his many varied interests from music to drama to programming and robotics. He talks about being spotted on more than one occasion on different beaches around town and his new interest in Jazz music. He is also looking forward to new heights as he may be joining a lumberjack show at Grouse Mountain in the summer. Bjorn played Lurch, the butler, in Delview's production of the musical, "The Addams Family" and describes some of the backstory he created in order to make the role more interesting. There are plenty more stories in this episode with the always-fascinating Bjorn. Mr. Yuill joins us for this one with a brief intermission at the start of the episode as we search for the source of some bird chirping sounds. You have to listen to understand!

David Valencia, who graduated from Delview in 2020, talks about going to Douglas for Creative Writing and his year at Vancouver Film School. He is now a freelance writer writing for animated films. We talk about what inspires him, what it takes to be creative, and some of the films he has seen. David and his friend Jay have a podcast on YouTube called "Jay and Dave went to Film School". Mr. Choy joins us for this one and surprises David with a few things at the end!

In this episode I chat with Nimmy Sebastian from the grad class of 2020. She also happens to be the poster child for the Beadie Luminaries ad that has been on our careers board for years! We chat about the non-grad of 2020 due to the pandemic, university life, UBC Science, the MCAT exam, and her current pursuit of Medicine. We also consider the difficulties of “adulting” and the joys and pain of snowboarding.

Ever wondered what it’s like to lay down play-by-play tracks in Snoop Dogg’s private studio? Our guest, James Cybulski, has done exactly that as the iconic voice of the EA Sports NHL franchise. A Gemini Award winner whose extensive resume includes anchoring Sportsnet Central, providing commentary on The Score, Sportsnet 650, and TSN, and recent play-by-play work for the Abbotsford Canucks and PWHL Vancouver Goldeneyes, James has covered it all. But this episode finds James Cybulski at a unique crossroads. Joined by his longtime friend Mr. Yuill, we catch up with James as he finishes his teaching practicum to discuss his fascinating media career and his surprising new journey to become a teacher.

Sofie Nicholson is in her final days of her student-teaching practicum at Delview, and she brings some incredible stories to this episode. She competed in the University Games - an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime experience where she was one of only a select few athletes chosen to represent Canada in taekwondo. Sofie joins Mr. Yuill and me to dive into how the sport has shaped her, how it’s pushed her, and what it means to now be coaching the next generation. We also get into how all of these experiences inspired her path into teaching and what she’s learned along the way. We’ll miss having her around, but we can’t wait to welcome her back as a colleague soon!

Mommy made me mash my M&M's! Three members of the cast of Delview's Addams Family musical playing Morticia (Mary), Wednesday (Lauren), and Gomez (Alex) join us for this cast-cast where we talk about their recent graduation, future plans, acting, singing, and all things theatrical. I also ask Alex why he tried to mess me up when I was presenting during Commencement, reminisce a little about our time with all three of them in Innovation 10, and ask Lauren why it took her so long to share her amazing voice not only in the musical but also in performing duets with Mary. They also share some theatre stories from behind the scenes!

Sarah spends most of her time in the outdoors and on Gambier Island. Mr. Turpin and I talk to her about her future plans after graduation and her love of nature and photography. Sarah also plays the banjo and rides horses - a diverse range of skills! We also talk about the Spring Break trip Turpin and Sarah were both on to France and Belgium to study WWI sites and what it meant to both of them to be where history was made.

Aliye Sasmaz, who is currently the Curatorial Assistant at the outstanding Beaty Biodiversity Museum at The University of British Columbia, joins Mr. Turpin and I in the podcast booth. Aliye talks about her research adventures including 40 days in the Ecuadorian Amazon, and her love of insects, spiders, and snakes, oh my! This episode comes about months after we happened to bump into Aliye while she was working at the biodiversity museum during one of our field trips. Enjoy this conversation with an inspiring member of the Class of 2018!

Gr. 12 student Addy Hebden joins us to talk about her upbringing, siblings, post-Delview plans, Ultimate, and more! Mr. Yuill co-hosts this conversation with Addy who is an amazing person and a role-model for everyone around her. Lots of adventures and a few ghost stories are packed into this episode.

Two colleagues who started at Delview at around the same time as I did are mapping out their retirement plans and looking forward to some well-deserved recreation and relaxation! Mr. Yuill co-hosts this episode as we chat about these teachers' careers, extensive travel experiences, and the excitement of a change in pace.

Grade 11 students Fae and Sukhman who are both in my Engineering and InfoTech classes join me to talk about music, robotics, school, AI, and a whole lot more!

Kacie Haberlin, from our 2018 grad class comes back to Delview to talk about her pandemic crocheting hobby that became a small business with a large social media following (@haberlinshobbies) of tens of thousands of people who are inspired every day by her work. She tells us about how she got started and the ups and downs of running a side business while she begins a career as a dental hygienist. Kacie also talks about her battle with Crohn’s disease. It’s an inspiring and illuminating conversation with an amazing person. Mr. Yuill co-hosts and lends his wisdom to this episode.

What is it like to be given a group of students for a short amount of time and be asked to take them on a journey of learning all the while trying to build relationships, solve all sorts of unique problems, and complete lesson plans, assessments, and coursework all at the same time? We ask our student teachers Ms. Jorssen and Ms. Webster what that was like and how they got to this point. Mr. Yuill and I welcome these two talented and passionate people to our profession. In the few weeks that we've had them with us, they have made quite an impression and we wish them all the best as they move on to become our newest teachers!

2024 Grads Gurnoor Malhi and Annabelle Chen stop by for a chat about their plans after graduation, what it’s like in India and Taiwan, driving, school, and almost everything else as they make their way out of Delview and into University. It’s a conversation with two close friends. I taught Gurnoor in Innovation 10 as well as InfoTech and Engineering. As well, she was my excellent peer tutor. I never taught Annabelle but she spent a great deal of time auditing the Engineering course.

Mr. Bennett who has been at Delview for 21 years is retiring! Mr. Waldman and Mr. Yuill join us in conversation with this Delview legend. We talk about his life, career, and of course about the greatest place on Earth, Manitoba! Join us for the stories, the banter, and the laughter as Mr. Bennett looks forward to moving on after so many years.

Grad 2022 Harnoor Sandhu drops in from Kelowna during a few days off from her studies. She has been volunteering and working as a paramedic and first responder since high school. She shares her many experiences as a paramedic and talks about some of the trials and tribulations of the job as well as her enthusiasm for helping others.

Dayanara Sinclair, Class of 2017, visits us in the podcast studio a couple of weeks after giving an inspiring talk to Media Arts students in Mr. Choy’s class about her journey from Disney dream to reality as she is now a 3D animator on the Disney Jr. show, “Alice’s Wonderland Bakery”. We talk about how hard work and persistence paid off even though she had to take her coursework online during the pandemic. Dayanara went from working and managing a popular Disney Store to animating for a Disney show. We talk about her creative process and the collaboration that takes place on an animation team as well as some of our favourite animated films and shows.

From the first sketch we saw coming from Han, we knew she was talented. Over the five years she's been at Delview, she's participated in many Fine Arts Nights, and has produced posters, logos, book covers, social media art, and plenty of whiteboard masterpieces that were painful to erase. She has been practicing for a long time and hopes to continue creating and sharing her art in some form or another into the future. In this episode, we talk about Han's life, art, and the future of art. We also discuss the advent of AI and what that means for artists. Kassie Lind co-hosts this one. We are at Episode 50!!! We love when alumni come back! Tiana Gordon, who graduated from Delview in 2015, returns to talk about her experiences as an interior designer and production designer. She has worked on numerous short films, commercials, and feature films including, “It’s A Wonderful Knife” (feat. Jane Widdop, Justin Long, Joel McHale) - in theatres this Christmas, “Cold Copy” - at the Tribeca Film Festival in NYC (feat. Jacob Tremblay), and Anthony Shim’s award-winning film, “Riceboy Sleeps”. We chat about the process of designing a set, the film business, and how she worked towards something she’s always wanted to do since she was a little kid.
