Former Delview International Student Nele Haas is back from Germany for a visit! She talks about finishing high school in Germany and looking forward to studying International Relations and Sustainability. We compare the differences and similarities in the customs and traditions of Germany and Canada (including yummy food), and talk about Nele’s travel adventures all over the world. We also discuss the concerns we all have as we experience climate change and our hopes for significant changes to how we do things. Student Kristie Lind does an amazing job co-hosting for a second time!

Diane has always been an amazingly positive and kind person, but when cancer struck her just a few days into the start of the school year in 2021, she showed everyone what “making the best of it” truly means. In this episode, Diane takes us into the world of Pokémon and anime, travelling, and the tribulations and ultimate triumph over Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Around these parts, we call her “Cancer Killer” and we hope her story of positivity and determination will inspire you as much as it has inspired us. Kristie Lind steps in as our first-ever student co-host as both students had a rare night off from their school musical, Urinetown.

In this episode we chat with Delview student, Akari Ishige, who is from Tokyo Japan. She’s one of our International Students and someone we’ve come to know very well here at Delview with her involvement in everything our school has to offer from her Live At Lunch performances as a singer and pianist to Drama productions including "Urinetown The Musical" which showing now in our Patti Hillman Theatre! I taught Akari web design and programming at the beginning of the pandemic as she was just trying to get adjusted to life in Canada. It still astounds me how much grit she has to have navigated that difficult time especially having just left her home and family almost 8000 km away in Tokyo to study in a country where she had to make new friends and learn a new language. Nancy's retiring! Our Assistant Superintendent and educator of 42 years, Nancy Gordon, came in to talk to us not once, but twice. Unfortunately, for the first time ever on the podcast, the audio file corrupted and Nancy graciously offered to come back for a redo, this time with multiple backups. Mark Turpin and I ask her about her career, legacy, and also what it was like being the parent of a student who graduated from Delview. Nancy has been strong supporter of our school community over the years and I have had the pleasure of working with her on a number of occasions. We wish her a happy retirement!

Mr. Sahli and I speak to the very talented Kaydee Deane about Radiohead, violin, guitar, and her Live At Lunch performances at our school. We talk a lot about music we like and how to deal with nerves before performing for an audience. Music has taken Kaydee on a path that she loves and we will be hearing more from her in the near future!

Who doesn't love Mr. Sahli? You'll love him even more after you listen to him talk about his interests in music, sports, and how he got into teaching. Besides being a really nice person and a talented teacher, Mr. Sahli loves collecting records and playing the drums. After many episodes of him as a co-host, it was about time we had a chat just about him!

She talks about how a knee injury changed her life, growing up in North Delta, and what it's like to be graduating high school. We get into sports, Formula 1 racing, driving, and much more. Delview teacher Dave Yuill tells us some stories about growing up as an army brat, his own time in the military, his business experience, the pharmaceutical industry, and how all of that lead to him finally becoming a teacher with a ton of life experience to share with others. After a long pandemic hiatus, we are back! We talk to Marten and Nele, two of our International Students from Germany. They discuss their experiences growing up in Germany and about what surprised them when they arrived in Canada for the first time. Both Marten from Hamburg and Nele from a town near Frankfurt have been wonderful additions to our school and throughout the interview I was impressed by how well-adjusted they were for young people from a country 8000 kilometres away and also how well both of them have been able to understand and speak English. At the beginning you will hear Nele and I wait patiently as Marten decides on what chair he will sit on (after bringing several different chairs into the room). Grad 2008 and Embedded Engineer Edwin Chand talks about the challenges and rewards of his career at Apple, how he got there after going through SFU Engineering and Blackberry, and the most important ingredients for success in any endeavour. Edwin also talks about how his family immigrated from Fiji and the challenges of becoming Canadians. Aleysha Johnson, Grad 2018, model, actor, and activist joins us after famously trolling the President of the United States by posting a video on Tik Tok showing how easy it was for her to reserve free tickets to the Tulsa Oklahoma rally and not show up (she was busy organizing lint from her carpet). We got in touch when I spotted her on a Late Show with Stephen Colbert segment about the Oklahoma rally. We also discuss how she has dealt with the pandemic, how she became an activist, and how young people can use their know-how of social media to make their voices heard and do something positive to help create a just society. Episode 37 - Jenaya Robertson. This year, Delview alumna Jenaya Robertson (Grad 2015) won the U SPORTS Chantal Navert Memorial Award which is awarded to the most outstanding player in Canada for university women's soccer. As the 5th year captain for the Trinity Western University Spartans, Jenaya broke her school's scoring record with 14 goals while leading her team to a first place division finish with a 12-1-1 record. We talk about her experiences with her team helping out in Africa and South America and looking forward to a future playing pro soccer in Europe and applying her marketing skills to help charitable organizations. As we close out 2019 I feel very thankful to have the opportunity to speak to so many remarkable people. Merry Christmas and see you in 2020!

Ashley Prasad, Delview Grad 2013 talks to us about her latest project, an eBook she helped out with as a volunteer for Empower The Future Association entitled, "Life After High School: A Post-Secondary Student's Guide to Success". Mr. Minichiello, a relatively new staff member at Delview talks about growing up Armenian / Italian in Squamish and East Van, History, how he got into Teaching, and Super Smash Bros. He also shares his experiences being someone who is talented enough to teach anything at Delview (or will figure out how). Mr. Sahli and I interrogate our fellow colleague.

Class of 2009 alumna Angie Grant is the Education Coordinator at the Delta Cultural Centre in Ladner. Cam Cunningham (Class of 2017) pays us a visit to talk about his sciencey world and how much he's learned since he started working in grade 11. He talks about his criminology program at KPU and how wonderful and stressful university life can be. Then we all travel back in time at 88 mph to talk to our younger selves.

Talented, funny, and eager to learn, twins Kristie and Kassie Lind join us to talk at length about musicals, acting, memes they love, morse code, languages, movies, and lettuce burgers. They are in grade 8 and just finished playing mafia heavies / pastry chefs in Delview's production of The Drowsy Chaperone which featured their big musical number, "Toledo Surprise" (delicious recipe / veiled threat). Turpin and I are speechless after Kassie's top-locker math but I Toledo surprise them with some of my own nerdy trinkets.

Mark Pocock, PE teacher and Athletic Director, stops in to talk to Mr. Sahli and I about his obsession with movies, composing music and playing guitar for a rock band ("Between Takes" on streaming and iTunes), and what led up to his first teaching gig at Delview. I forget to ask him about being a poster boy in the late 80's for Nintendo but I'll post something on social media (@raideopodcast).

Diaz is back along with two of our HEROS - Isabelle Levy and Bhawna Handa! The students demonstrate ASMR (leaving Diaz confused), talk about the mission of the HEROS (Helping Everyone Respect Our Society) program, debate about phones and social media, and for the first time, reveal their career aspirations after they graduate. An amazingly fun and enlightening conversation with these terrific people!

Maya, daughter of our day custodian Cecelio chats with us about her experience traveling by herself as a young girl to Japan, her aspirations to become an elementary school teacher, and balut.
