verses 5 and 6 are one sentence. V. 5 is the negative half and v. 6 is the positive half. -Living in the flesh- Paul means here as the opposite of being in the Spirit. This means being unregenerated, or the natural state of man.-In this state our members bear the fruit for death.-But we have been released from the Law and died to the law which held us captive so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit.

This chapter follows the major theme of I Samuel, contrasting David against Saul. David was the better king, after God's own heart, that Israel needed. David was a good leader while Saul was an evil leader. Saul was merciless while David was merciful. In these ways and more, David prefigures Jesus Christ. Jesus is the only perfect and merciful leader and savior who welcomes all who come to him in faith.

I Samuel 21 records David's escape from Gibeah, to Nob, and then to Gath. During this period of David's life, the Lord was testing and preparing him to take the throne. Because he was under the grace of God, he was protected and delivered. God is the only safe refuge from the world and our own sin. Those who are in Christ can rest secure in the knowledge that their heavenly Father loves and protects them.

We are saved by what was done to Christ. We have died to the Law.-We have died in Christ. We now belong to Christ and may bear fruit for God.

After the resurrection, Jesus appeared to 2 men headed out from Jerusalem. He explained to them what had happened from the Scriptures. At supper, He broke bread with them and they knew it was Jesus. They then went back to Jerusalem to the others.

On the evening of the first day of the week, the resurrected Lord Jesus Christ came and met with his disciples. He said -peace- to them twice. The first was to emphasize that he had atoned for their sin, ensuring them that they were his beloved and redeemed disciples. The second was a blessing on the mission he gave them. They were tasked with building the church on the foundation of Jesus through preaching of the Gospel. Christ is the only cornerstone on which the church can build. As we build on Jesus, he gives his blessing and grows his church. Dependence on Christ and his Gospel is the key to fruitfulness.

When Jesus washed the disciples' feet, he was teaching them a lesson. Every one of the disciples needed to be cleansed from their sin. The way in which Jesus cleansed them was through his death and resurrection. The foot washing, along with the Lord's supper itself, was a way of showing them how he would serve them as their savior in the days to come. We see the humility and love of Christ in his work on our behalf.

Augustine's -City of God- speaks of two cities. The earthly city is concerned with itself and hates God, while the heavenly city serves the Lord and seeks make his glory known. In this passage, we see Jonathan caught between his father and his best friend. His loyalty was tested, and yet remained with his best friend. The reason for this is that he was looking to the city of God, not the earthly city. We too must choose between loving this world or the Lord. Only eyes of faith can see the true king and the eternal kingdom. Where do your loyalties lie--

an introduction by Paul concerning the law, illustration of the law and, and an application of that illustration. The application about how sin in our lives has died and we have been raised from the dead in Christ and we may bear fruit for God.

This passage explains how David was forced to flee from Saul and begin his life on the run. The grand lesson of the account is that the Holy Spirit is all-powerful. Saul quenched the Spirit, while David sought guidance from and obedience to the Spirit.

A review of chapters 1-6 and the introduction to Chapter 7. Paul says that the problem for the church is sin.

Paul sends greetings from those who minister with him.-He and they offer encouragement to the churches at Colossae and at Laodicea. Some were from Colossae and knew them. -Paul lets them know how those with him care for the churches.-He asks them to remember his chains, for he in in prison.

The Lord is our great Deliverer, who has rescued us from sin and condemnation. In rescuing us, he has set us free from evil in order to serve Him. Therefore, the Lord calls us to pursue godliness. In this passage we see ways that the Lord used humility, bravery, and truth to accomplish his will in David's life. Godliness is not an optional pursuit for believers, but something that is central to the Christian life. Christ desires that we seek to be like him, therefore, pursue holiness.

This passage offers a fascinating look into the contrast between those who love the Lord and those who rebel against him. In Jonathan we see a heart of faith, responding to the anointed king with humility and love. Saul, however, presents us with a picture of those who reject the king in favor of themselves. Idolaters will receive their punishment. But for those who submit to and love King Jesus now, he calls you friend. David and Jonathan's covenant of friendship and love was wonderful because it gives a small glimpse into the much greater love the Savior has for his people, for those whom he calls friends. Seek to know that love and, if you already know it, to know it better.

Slaves -servants- obey in everything, with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord.-Do all work heartily for the Lord.-Our inheritance is from the Lord and will be received as a reward.-Those who commit wrongdoing will be paid back for the wrong.-Masters treat slaves justly and fairly, for you have a Master in heaven.-Continue in prayer steadfastly. Pray for an open door to declare the mystery of Christ. Walk in wisdom, trying to make the best use of our -time. Our speech should always be gracious, with wisdom, to answer -each person.

Do all things in the name of Jesus, giving thanks to the Father.-Wives are to submit to their husbands according to the Lord.-Husbands are to love their wives -as Christ has loved the church-.-Children are to obey their parents, Fathers are not to provoke them to discouragement.

This passage may well be the most familiar Old Testament account, to both believers and unbelievers. The David and Goliath battle has become emblematic for an underdog taking down a big bad enemy, against all odds. But this passage is not about how to become a David. We are actually Israel in this story- shaking in fear and helpless. Rather, the entire narrative is about a helpless people being rescued by God's power, through His anointed. For Israel the savior was David. But he was only a type of the Messiah to come. In Christ we have the better David who rescued us from Satan's power.

This chapter presents a wonderful study on the providence of God. The Lord is the main actor all the way through the chapter, putting all the pieces together to have his chosen future king anointed and trained for kingship. The favor and Spirit of the Lord rested upon David, bringing all of his plans to fruition.

This section covers the final rejection of Saul from being the legitimate king over Israel. Saul rejected God's word, so the Lord rejected him. Saul thought he could serve the Lord however he wanted, but he was sorely mistaken. God demands worship according to his Word, not however man wants to offer it. God wants our heartfelt obedience and right worship.
