Queen of Katwe
29/09/2016 Duração: 01h02minOn this week's Back to the Movies, we're continuing our trip into the waters of family drama with Disney's Queen of Katwe? starring David Oyelowo and Lupita Nyong'o. The film follows a young girl from the slums of Uganda named Phiona Mutesi who finds her calling when a football coach decides to start a chess club. The film follows Phiona's journey to finding happiness and success for her family through her passion for Chess. Queen of Katwe is an especially unique film thanks to its inclusion of women working on the film both behind behind the scenes and in front of the camera. This week I'm rejoined by The Film Syllabus's Alexandra Bohannon to review the film after we've talked about what we've been watching. Alexandra was excited to talk about her recent binge of RuPaul's Drag Race and the former hit show Parks and Rec. I talk about last weekend's Magnificent 7 and whether or not it brings anything fresh to the western genre. I also talk about another recent foray into anime with Satoshi Kon's Perfect Blue.

Don't Breathe
08/09/2016 Duração: 01h51sThings go dark on this week's Back to the Movies as we discuss the recent horror smash hit Don't Breathe. This week Dalton Stuart returns once again to share his enthusiasm for Fede Alvarez's Evil Dead before delving into our review of Don't Breathe. To break the ice, Dalton and I both discuss what we've been watching. Dalton caught up with Mike Birbiglia's Don't Think Twice and the political drama from House of Cards showrunner Beau Willimon's Ides of March. I talk a little bit about my recent foray back into anime, Digimon, and Harry Potter after landing a new writing job. We also take a moment to discuss the passing of the legendary Gene Wilder by discussing some of his most memorable performances.Don't Breathe is directed by Sam Raimi's most recent Evil Dead protege Fede Alvarez and stars Jane Levy, Stephen Lang,Dylan Minnette, and Daniel Zovatto. The story follows three teens as they attempt to break in and rob a blind veteran after he wins a major settlement for a tragic accident. The film looks like an

Yoga Hosers
01/09/2016 Duração: 01h13minThis week's Back to the Movies takes us north to fantasy land of fictional Canada to review the second part of Kevin Smith's True North Trilogy, Yoga Housers. This week Arthur is on a weekend trip to the great north which means I decided to throw a Back to the Movies house party and invited local actor and the star of Electric Nostalgia and Heroes of the Realm, Stephen Goodman!Stephen and I talk about our love for Kevin Smith's early career and his more recent work as a podcaster at Smodcast. We also discuss his less well received Tusk before breaking down its successor, Yoga Hosers. He's gradually become more polarizing since Clerks II which makes each and every one of his projects a curious venture.Yoga Hosers stars a pair of Canadian convenience clerks named Colleen(Harley Quinn Smith and Lily-Rose Depp) who must team with the oddball investigator Guy LaPointe (Johnny Depp) fight off an army of mini-sausage Nazis(nicknamed Bratzis) before they try to take over the world. Kubo and the Two Strings
25/08/2016 Duração: 01h01minThis week Arthur and I taking another trip to animation land as we go Back to the Movies to review the stop motion animated Kubo and the Two Strings. The movie features stunning animation from Laika Studio who is known for Coraline, Paranorman, and Boxtrolls. What sets Kubo apart from the others is its distinct influence from Japanese woodblock art and the Japanese cultural folklore the film draws from. Before delving into the review, we continue our new segment where your hosts talk about what we've been watching. This week Arthur has been re-watching lots of Scrubs and remembering the glory of Zach Braff in his earlier years. I mix things up by talking about my most recent adventures watching Rick & Morty and checking out Mamoru Hosoda's The Boy and the Beast. In our review of Kubo and the Two Strings, Arthur and I talk about the film's theme of family and non-violence. The film may have a pretty straight forward plot, but the film does a surprising amount of work into reinforcing the larger moral of th

Hell or High Water
18/08/2016 Duração: 01h03sThis week's Back to the Movies continues to bring us down from the loud and furious flash that resembles nothing of summer 2016 by taking a look at a lesser anticipated film titled Hell or High Water. This week's podcast is co-hosted by recurring guest host Dalton Stuart of The People's History of Film who swears he didn't know this movie was made just for him.Hell or High Water follows Jeff Bridges, Chris Pine, Ben Foster, and Gil Birmingham in a game of cat and mouse between a pair of Texas Rangers as they investigate a string of bank robberies. At this point this modern western sounds like an age old story, but Hell or High Water doesn't just execute genre, but instead twists it into a far more ambiguous tale.Dalton and I talk about the film's portrayal of West Texas and Southwest Oklahoma and it's look at of complexities of fighting poverty. It's a real change of pace from most of the films that have been released this summer and I think you'll be quite surprised by the result. Like what you hear? Help us

The Little Prince - To Stream or To Not Stream?
11/08/2016 Duração: 46minThis week we're going off script as we ditch the planned Pete's Dragon review in favor of something a bit more of a wild card with the Netflix release of The Little Prince. Arthur and I talk about our experience(or lack thereof) with the original 1943 children's novella. The original novella is the fourth most-translated book in the world and was voted the best book of the 20th century in France. It's been translated into more than 250 languages and has sold more than 140 copies worldwide. Its popularity is so big, in fact, we're a bit surprised it took long this long to make it to the big screen. The film was originally slated for release through Paramount in March, but was mysteriously dropped from distribution less than a week before its scheduled opening. Thankfully, Netflix came to save the day of another classic from the trenches of obscurity. The Little Prince's film adaptation is a sort of quasi-sequel to the novella that follows the crashed pilot in his old age. It sports a killer cast including Jeff B

Suicide Squad with Vinton Bayne from Graphomania
04/08/2016 Duração: 01h20minAfter having a few weeks off from comic book movie madness, Back to the Movies has returned to the genre to take a look at Warner Bros follow up to the lackluster Batman v Superman follow up, Suicide Squad. This week Arthur and I are joined by a team of guest hosts including Dalton Stuart from The People's History of Film to talk about David Ayer's first foray into the superhero movie scene. GoodTrash didn't come to the review empty handed. Our ragtag team of anti-cohosts is completed by a pair of comic book experts. We're joined by the mastermind behind the Graphomania Podcast Network and host of Read Brave Comics, Vinton Bayne. To fill out the team we're joined once again by aspiring comics PhD Kenneth "Dr. Comics" Kimbrough to drop the knowledge and theory on the Suicide Squad. The marketing for the film has been on fire and the online buzz has hardly been higher for any movie this summer, but can the team of anti-heroes really turn the DC ship around?Listen to guests Vinton and Kenneth talk more Suicide

Ghostbusters - Remake, Reboot, Redo?
21/07/2016 Duração: 01h01minThis week's Back to the Movies throws us back to 1980s nostalgia once again as we sit down to review the remake(?), reboot(?), redo(?) of Ghostbusters! Arthur was so excited about this movie that he actually decided to cancel his podcasting career and start busting those ghosts with the Funky Soul Retrievers. Instead, I'm joined again by Alexandra Bohannon from The GoodTrash Genrecast / The Film Syllabus to discuss whether or not the all women led Ghostbusters delivers another classic. We're no strangers to the Ghostbusters here on GoodTrash Media. Back in the early days of the GoodTrash Genrecast, we even did a full analysis with guest Nick Sanford episode talking marshmallow man and all. The original 1984 Ghostbusters is no doubt a beloved classic by fans. So beloved, in fact, that there's been a very vocal group of fans who have voiced their qualms with an all ladies cast. In this episode, Alexandra and I discuss the importance of women representation on the big screen before getting into the nitty gritty

The Neon Demon
14/07/2016 Duração: 01h12minHello again listeners, it's time for one of those rare times of the year when we head to the arthouse cinema. This week we're heading Back to the Movies to check out GoodTrash Media's highly anticipated film The Neon Demon from director Nicolas Winding Refn. This week Arthur takes another break in order to pursue his modeling career which means we had to call in the hosts of The Film Syllabus, Dustin Sells and Alexandra Bohannon, to join this more analysis driven review. We're also joined a first time guest, University of Oklahoma T.A. and aspiring comic book PhD, Kenneth Kimbrough. If you've been a long time listener of the GoodTrash Genrecast, you'll know we're all undeniable Drive apologists. It's pseudo-80s aesthetic, slick soundtrack, and western genre tropes made it an instant GoodTrash essential. Long time listeners will also know the Genrecast wasn't in favor of 2012's Only God Forgives, but we've been anxiously awaiting Refn's next project ever since. After a particularly long hiatus, the director is

The Swiss Army Man
07/07/2016 Duração: 47minThis week's Back to the Movies takes a break from all of the giant explosions, mutated turtles, and oversaturated CGI fantasy to look at a film that's cut from a different cloth as we look at Swiss Army Man. In this week's discussion, Arthur begins his sabbatical to a deserted island which put The Film Syllabus co-host Alexandra Bohannon back in the co-hosts chair. Also joining us to discuss the madness is friend of the show/local film producer Zachary Burns. If you're not familiar, Swiss Army Man is the story between a suicidal man named Hank (Paul Dano) and his friend Manny(Daniel Radcliffe) who just happens to be a corpse that washed up on shore. The two bond together as Hank tries to find his way home. Like what you hear? Help us produce even more by supporting us on Patreon

The Purge 3: Purge Harder Election Year
30/06/2016 Duração: 32minHappy Fourth of July weekend listeners! To celebrate the sacrifice of movie viewing independence, Arthur and I went Back to the Movies to review Hollywood's celebration of gun toting violence in America. Is the film intentionally celebrating violence or is there more than meets the eye in The Purge: Election Day? Like what you hear? Help us produce even more by supporting us on Patreon

Finding Dory
23/06/2016 Duração: 54minWe here at GoodTrash Media have a real soft spot for Pixar films. While our first GTM Pixar outing in our The Good Dinosaur review wasn't exactly a huge success, most films from the studio have delivered some sort of life changing emotional catharsis. This week's Back to the Movies has Arthur and I reviewing the sequel to Finding Nemo that nobody asked for before delving deep into our personal experiences with Pixar films.Finding Dory takes us back to her childhood where we learn that she was born with short term memory loss and was separated from her parents at birth. She wandered the ocean on her own until eventually running into Marlin and embarking our their journey to find Nemo. After settling, Dory has a near death experience that awaken memories about the whereabouts of her parents. Dory insists on chasing her memory and finding out where she came from.We talk a little bit about whether or not this film justifies its own existence before giving our brief review and recommendations. The real meat of the

Warcraft
16/06/2016 Duração: 38minThe cinema flashbacks keep coming as we look at another property that arrived in the 90s, Warcraft. That's right, Caleb and Arthur went Back to the Movies to check out the mega-blockbuster from Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) to see if it's worth your time going back to the movies. Your fearless hosts wandered aimlessly through several different worlds to finally arrive in Azeroth. Duncan Jones' Warcraft takes on the tall order of adapting one of the most beloved game franchises of all time, and it is a tall order. This is also the third video game adaptation of 2016, following the financially successful Angry Birds and the flop Ratchet and Clank. With Assassin's Creed on the holiday horizon, the question of whether video games make good source material is really in the forefront of your hosts' minds. Warcraft tries and the results are well examined by Arthur and Caleb. This fantasy story of Orcs invading a new world to try and sustain their way of life has a lot of ambition, and features a notable cast of c

TMNT: Out of the Shadows
09/06/2016 Duração: 43minThe 90s nostalgia just doesn't want to end. This week, Arthur and I head Back to the Movies with a look at the Michael Bay-produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, directed by Dave Green (Earth to Echo). Much like last week's episode involving X-Men: Apocalypse, this episode featured much reminiscing. Well, for Arthur anyway. Admittedly, my Turtle Nostalgia is quite minimum. This newest entry in the Turtle Franchise is another attempt to capitalize on a series that dates back to the 80s and as cycled in and out of popularity for nearly 30 years. Can it rise above it's predecessor? Or is Michael Bay's talons sunk in too deep? Picking up where the last film left off, the Turtles are still unable to come out and play for fear of becoming icons of fear. As this raises tensions within the team, a sinister new force threatens the world by enlisting the help of the Shredder and Baxter Stockman as well as a couple of new heavies. But the Turtles aren't alone as they're once again backed by April O'Ne

X-Men: Apocalypse
02/06/2016 Duração: 01h14minThe superhero movies of 2016 just keep on coming and this week, Arthur and I head Back to the Movies to geek out about the X-Men with our special guest host and one of the leads of the upcoming film Electric Nostalgia, Stephen Goodman. Stephen is a SAG actor out of Oklahoma City who loves comic books and has a particular passion for Aquaman and Moonight, but also has a keen degree of excitement for the latest adventures in X-Men. If you want to know more about GoodTrash Media friend Stephen Goodman, you can check out his interview with Dalton on The People's History of Film.We talk about our lifelong fandoms of the X-series and where the films lay in comparison the their Marvel Cinematic Universe rivals before reviewing Bryan Singer's fourth X-film, X-Men: Apocalypse. The film has the daunting task of bringing further closure to the character arcs laid out in X-Men: First Class while also bringing aboard newcomers like Cyclops, Jean Grey, Nightcrawler, and even Jubilee(who is about as used here about as much

The Nice Guys
26/05/2016 Duração: 44minThe buddy cop genre may be long passed its prime, but that doesn't mean veterans like Shane Black doesn't have a few more creative aces up his sleeves. Back the Movies revs up for the impending wave of big dumb summer action movies with a breath of fresh air in our review discussion of The Nice Guys starring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe. The show does the same good cop/bad cop routine with Caleb and his guest from, The People's History of Film, Dalton Stuart. The Nice Guys is a neo-noir sort bro comedy about a half baked Private Eye and gun for hire teaming up to find a girl who's gone missing. The duo don't exactly get off on friendly footing, but they reluctantly decide to work together when the price is right. If this sound like just about every buddy cop movie ever made, it's because this movie doesn't exactly rock the boat in terms of plot structure. Shane Black essentially redefined the genre when he wrote the original Lethal Weapon, but can he continue to bring a fresh flavor to big screen? The Nice G

High Rise
19/05/2016 Duração: 31minWe're still in that space between spaces following Marvel's 800 pound gorilla, Captain America: Civil War. Back to the Movies continues our trend of spring sleeper hits with director Ben Wheatley's latest flick, High Rise. The cinema was a little short on new releases so this week so Caleb and Arthur decide to cheat and head back to the couch for the readily on demand film. High Rise features a utopian society left completely encapsulated in one high rise building. The story features a number of eccentric characters played by some of your very favorite British performers including Tom Hiddleston, Elizabeth Moss, Jeremy Irons, Luke Evans, Sienna Miller, and James Purefoy. The film features these characters and their reaction the slow and very naked collapse of society. The film uses striking imagery and relies on its strong performances to deliver some of the more compelling ideas of the film.If you're looking for something a little more low key, this is just the podcast review discussion for you! The Greenest Room
12/05/2016 Duração: 58minThis week's Back to the Movies moves away from the superhero action and cranks the spectacle down a notch or 5 by looking at Blue Ruin writer/director Jeremy Saulnier's latest, Green Room. This week Caleb is joined by GoodTrash Media's recurring hosts Alexandra Bohannon and Dalton Stuart to discuss the mesmerizing horror/suspense thriller. We're also glad to be joined for the first time by special guest host Jacob Leighton Burns. Jacob is the co-founder of Planet Thunder Productions, the co-host of Talkies and the writer/director of the highly anticipated upcoming film, Electric Nostalgia. The film follows a punk rock band who finds themselves in a deadly situation after playing a show in a skinhead bar. If the premise wasn't enough to catch your attention, you'll want to take a look at the incredible cast featuring an evil Patrick Stewart, Imogen Poots, Anton Yelchin, Alia Shawkat, Macon Blair, and Mark Webber. Since its debut at Cannes 2015, Green Room has been critically lauded as a masterpiece. The entir
