The Acting Realtor Podcast

For me, a time of introspection and reflection is always a good thing and I hope that you’ll humor me. I find it interesting to not only look back on your own life experiences, but to research your family history to see what life was like for those that have gone before you.

In this episode of the #ActingRealtor #podcast, I do my best to juggle my schedule while being involved in five different theatrical productions at once. I also head to Newark, DE for a Cabaret performance and audition for the first of two different productions of The Hunchback of Notre Dame in hopes of getting to play another one of my dream roles.

I decided to let you in on a little secret. Something I probably shouldn't tell you as someone who makes a living helping people buy/sell houses.

When I got into the real estate business, it was because I wanted to help people while being true to myself. But it didn’t take long for me to see that my way of thinking doesn’t necessarily jell with the industry at large. In case you haven’t noticed, the Real Estate industry “gurus” try their best to create cookie-cutter agents who go with the flow and do things the same way as everyone else. But I refuse to let them make a typical "realtor" out of me. I dare to be different.

In this episode of the #ActingRealtor, I brave a spring snowstorm to attend a client's home inspection. I also receive performance offers for a summer tour of The Jungle Book with FamilyStages and a one-man show with Philly Senior Stage. Additionally I get to celebrate a long overdue real estate settlement, attend a networking event in my hometown, and receive an invite to audition at the Arden Theatre in Philadelphia.

Up ’til now I have tried my best to encourage you to take some baby steps toward pursuing your dream. I’ve allowed you to examine my life in a rather voyeuristic manner as I share story after story of my mistakes and failures. I’m pretty open about my struggles when asked, and sometimes even when I’m not asked. And that’s why it has been comfortable for you to read, listen, and/or watch me from afar. “This guy’s just like me,” you may even tell yourself. But I have some bad news for you. There comes a point in every relationship when a gauntlet must dropped. Consider this our DTR (Define the Relationship) conversation.

In this episode of the #ActingRealtor, I catch you up on my real estate progress, and take you to Quakertown with me for an Adam's Fear gig during Daylight Saving Time. I also book 15 gigs for the second half of 2018, and go to the grocery store during a snowstorm. Riveting!

Over the last few weeks, I’ve mainly focused on our own internal struggles and insecurities that keep us from taking the necessary steps to better our situation. Our past failures, fear, and overall self-doubt make up just some of the voices that swirl around inside our head and keep our feet nailed to the floor. These voices must be silenced if you ever hope to pursue something your passionate about as a career. However there is something else that keeps us from taking the most thrilling leap of our lives. How do we silence the voices of those around us who want to keep us from believing we can achieve more?  

I should’ve known that when I decided to discuss the topic of procrastination, that I would do just that – procrastinate. When I sat down to write the copy for this video, I found myself finding every excuse not to do it. I also struggled to focus on what I wanted to say. And that’s what happens to everyone. We waste time thinking about doing something instead of just getting it done.  

It takes a lot of gumption to jump-start your life after years of being stuck in the mundane. No doubt that’s why a lot of us have, at one time or another, chosen to stay put in jobs or circumstances that were less than ideal. Many of us have battled with our own limited perception of what we are capable of and that has kept us anchored to our increasingly uncomfortable desk chairs. It’s one thing to doubt that things will go your way based on past experiences, but I think what holds people back more than anything else is doubting your own talents and abilities. I call this the 900lb Gorilla of Self-Doubt. We simply buy in to the lie that we can’t do something that in truth we are completely capable of doing. We allow the figurative gorilla to pin us down so that we are imprisoned within our current habitat. But there is an entire world out there just waiting to be explored, and until you tackle the gorilla, you will never be able to discover what you were created to do.  

In this episode of the Acting Realtor podcast, some of my planned performances get derailed by inclement weather and miscommunication. Our household sanity nearly gets derailed when my wife succumbs to the flu and I try not to get it while attempting to somehow fill my her incredibly organized shoes.

In the last podcast, I ranted and raved about the importance of educating yourself beyond (and maybe even in place of) formal education. The number one way we can educate ourselves is to stimulate our brain by reading. And I don’t mean reading your News Feed or click-bait articles. I mean good old fashioned books.  

The podcast version of Acting Realtor TV episode 9. In this episode, I conclude my commitment to Philly Senior Stage. I also open my next show at Facetime Theatre in Phoenixville and take my sons to the Philly Auto Show. Finally, I celebrate the incredible moment of watching my hometown Philadelphia Eagles win their first Superbowl in franchise history and attend the victory parade.

By now you probably know that I didn’t go to college. The older I get the more I realize that that may not be such a bad thing. And here’s why… If I were to ask you to think of a friend or family member who went to college, started and finished with the same major, and subsequently got a job in their precise field of study, you’d probably find it difficult to pinpoint more than a handful. The truth is the majority of people who go to college have no idea what they want to do in life when deciding on a college and area of study.  

I HATE FEAR. More accurately, I hate what fear does to people. It makes us irrational. Fear is a cycle that allows us to stay stuck in our wrong frame of mind. It’s an emotional state that cripples us from making right choices. When we are afraid, that is the only thing we can think about it. And we can’t imagine that we will ever be able to overcome our fears. So many people know what they want out of life but fear keeps them from pursuing it.
