In addition to being a four-time Ironman finisher, he has competed in most of all of the spotlight events in Memphis from Memphis in May 10k and triathlon to the St Jude marathon and 24 hour tour d’Esprit. • LHRL® #130- John Wooley @makewodsgreatagain

    23/01/2019

https://youtu.be/nLSMnGlPrH0 @makewodsgreatagain was created originally as a Twitter feed called CrossFit Trump. Started immediately after the 2016 presidential election, it was designed to poke fun and satire the political climate while weaving in fitness themed trolling. On the advice of a very smart teenager, the page added an instagram feed to reach a broader audience. The page meandered around for several months until its first real "break" when the page was featured on the CrossFit Games Update show during the now defunct CrossFit Regionals. Several CrossFit Games athletes picked up on and shared the page in their story and the page took off. Since that time @makewodsgreatagain has focused on content that is irreverent and edgy while trying to connect to the community with relatable topics.

  • LHRL® 129- Chris Miller

    09/01/2019

https://youtu.be/zupabLuK7S4 Chris Miller is a husband, father, and an L1 coach at CrossFit Hammered Steel.  A chronic underachiever, he was never good at sports and majored in staying out late and binging on fast food.  Fast forward to three years ago when he walked into OBCF to inquire about joining a CrossFit box.  One workout and he was hooked. After a year he celebrated his training with a half marathon at Herb Parsons in 9 degree weather, complete with snow and ice. It was here he discovered a love for trails. Since then he has participated in and completed a number of trails and is training for his second Sylamore 50k coming up next month in February. Although he doesn’t get to run as much as he’d like to, he still enjoys pushing folks in his 5 am CrossFit classes and encouraging new people to try the trails.

    26/12/2018

https://youtu.be/KFiPimpeICg April is a dedicated mother to three beautiful children, occupational therapist by trade, loving wife, and ambitious runner. April loves to be a cheerleader to everyone around her, encouraging her family and friends to go after their dreams and do what it takes to accomplish their goals. She has been fortunate enough to be taken in by the local running community where she can motivate other runners and be motivated as well. April hasn’t always been into fitness. She spent her college days eating Mexican food, working a vast array of part-time jobs, and climbing to the top of student organizations at UT Martin and UTHSC while completing her Master’s degree. After working in healthcare and observing the effects of a poor diet and sedentary lifestyle, she found a passion for fitness, especially running, and a penchant for nutrition. She has a preference for running on the trails and some of her favorite races include the Ouachita 50K, Grayson Highlands, and the Walking Tall 50K. A

  • LHRL® #127- Just the hosts

    19/12/2018

https://youtu.be/vyMkKW9a0GI One of the things that I enjoy the most about the LHRL Podcast is that it doesn't fit into a box. We are not governed by the rules of a boss or the financial influence of a sponsorship which requires us to conform to any sort of structure. At the end of the day, we are a group of friends who like to get together, share some laughs end enjoy interesting conversations. It just so happens that we all enjoy fitness, therefore much of our conversation is focused around just that. As I get older, the idea of having regular conversation with friends seems to be of more and more value to me and this podcast gives me the opportunity to experience that on a regular basis in a healthy environment. I can't tell you how much I enjoy recording the podcast and getting to interact with, not only the hosts but the listeners which I get the opportunity to meet as a result of it. This week, we talk about our usual amount of misaligned ridiculousness but we also talk about some things that LHRL® h

    12/12/2018

https://youtu.be/9g85ECH81Ag Lisa Barker (“Honey” to her grandkids) is a wife, mother to three, grandmother to six and avid ultra-distance runner from Bartlett, TN. In her spare time, she’s a Senior Registered Client Service Associate with UBS, holding Series 7, 63 and 66 securities licenses. Lisa’s transformation from empty-nester to ultra runner began in 2008 after she read an article in the Memphis Commercial Appeal on how to start running. Intrigued and unhappy with the state of her overall health, she donned a hat and sunglasses and took off using mailboxes as run/walk markers. It was a struggle but she persevered. In 2011, Lisa began training with Memphis in Motion and has been reaching new heights ever since. Since then, Lisa has completed fifteen marathons, ten 50k’s, two 60k’s, two 50 miler and most recently a 100 miler. Additionally, she’s logged over 360 miles at The Tour D’Espirit. Looking back on her early struggles as a runner, Lisa is reminded of one of her favorite quotes: “It took her a w

    05/12/2018

https://youtu.be/pcM5F-i-zp8 I’ve lived in Pittsburgh, PA my entire life and I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.  I feel like I had a typical average childhood, and playing sports was a big part of my youth.  I played baseball and football growing up until I got to high school (my size was a big disadvantage), but the sport I loved the most was tennis.  I started playing when I was 8 and played competitively until my mid-20s.  I also dabbled in volleyball in high school and college.  Once my teaching career started I let sports and fitness take a back seat.  One of the great things about being a teacher is working with all ages of students.  During my summers I work for an organization called People to People.  With this program, I chaperone high school students around the world.  I’ve been blessed to do this for over 20 years and have seen many amazing places. In 2009, I ate my way across a 3-week trip to Australia with students and a week at an all-inclusive resort in the Dominican Republic.  By the ti

  • LHRL® #123- Just the hosts

    21/11/2018

https://youtu.be/U6-vHej3djE I keep telling myself that I will reserve one week out of the month for us to do a podcast with only the hosts and every month we come across some awesome guest that causes me to fill up the calendar... which is a fantastic problem to have. The podcasts with just the four of us are some of my favorites. There is nothing better than just kicking-back and talking about whatever comes to mind while playfully picking on one another. This week, we were fresh off of the Tunnel Hill 50 mile race and we discussed our performances and some of the events that took place. Big Thirsty announced his retirement from distance running only moments before eluding to the possibility of running the 100-mile race next year. Von discussed seeing ghosts from the Civil War during the overnight portion of his 100mile race. And, Amanda wrapped up the program by announcing that she was ready to go to "Pooh Town" which seemed like a good time to shut down the cameras. It's always a lot of fun on the epis

  • LHRL® #122- Kent Stoneking

    14/11/2018

https://youtu.be/90yIf1r0hdY Kent is a walking miracle. Not because he’s the greatest athlete – nothing could be further from the truth. Not because he’s a freak of nature in any particular way. He’s a pretty average guy who’s just blessed. Really blessed. Kent developed type 1 diabetes at age 11. While others with this disease have gone blind, lost kidney function or suffered an amputation, Kent remains in excellent health. At 51, he doesn’t even need glasses. Dealing with his own diabetes propelled Kent to pursue a career in healthcare. He is a pharmacist and Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE), helping others to navigate their own pathway to success with diabetes management. In 2004, Kent ran his first St. Jude marathon. His blood glucose bottomed out at mile 25, but with the help of his running partner, he was able to get the sugar boost he needed and finish the race. After that scare, his wife urged him to engage in other activities besides distance running. Kent took up soccer and shorter races. A motorcy

  • LHRL #120- Kevin Leathers

    31/10/2018

https://youtu.be/5_H7jWlOyZM This week we had the pleasure of visiting with our friend Kevin Leathers. Kevin is the head coach and owner of Can't Stop Endurance and is one of the most well-reputed run coaches in the area. Some of you might remember Kevin from LHRL® #74 or you might even know him as "Coach Kevin" if you have ever participated in the St. Jude Marathon. Asides from the fact that Kevin is one of our favorite people, we wanted to sit down with him and discuss some of the changes that will be taking place in this year's St. Jude race as well as what some of his work entails. We also wanted to talk about his new Can't Stop Endurance Podcast which was launched last week. Kevin is a laid back guy with a good sense of humor, however, he takes his duties as a coach quite seriously. It's fun to pick his brain about what it is like to be a coach, spectate races as a coach, as well as some of the anxieties and frustrations that come with the duty of training athletes. We hope you enjoy episode #120 as

We hope you enjoy listening to the show as much as we enjoyed recording it.

  • LHRL® #117- Melisa Burgess

    09/10/2018

https://youtu.be/QQfAdCKKnH0 I’ve lived in the Memphis area since I was 20 so I consider this home.  I stumbled upon fitness after coming out the darkest times I had ever know. Recovering from addiction was one thing but being left to deal with myself and the world unable to medicate was unbearable. For awhile smoking cigarettes was all I had left. One day while I was hiding on the side of my house smoking and looking at my 2 years old face pressed against the glass the feeling rushed over me this just wasn’t acceptable. I made the decision to quit and put on over 50 pounds in 1 year.  I hated myself and would cry in my car before I had to walk into a commitment. A new low. I began to notice my buddy Wilson and his lady Amanda were running and doing CF. More importantly, I saw my friend who once had a look similar to mine grow a twinkle in his eye. I wanted to twinkle. I NEEDED to twinkle. So I downloaded Couch to 5k and hit the pavement. I joined Orangetheory Fitness and Weight Watchers and over a period ha

  • LHRL® #114- Just the Hosts

    19/09/2018

https://youtu.be/riWjfOjtgow On this week's podcast, it was just the four of us. As usual, we got off-topic but managed to have a great time. We spent a great deal of time talking about different races and events that we have coming up but, more importantly, we discussed the reasons why we run these races and the level of importance that each of us places on them. Each of us is running towards or away from different things and there is no "right" or "wrong" way to participate but it is important to do things for yourself and trail races are something that has enhanced all of our lives and friendships. It is going to be a great ultra season and we hope to get to meet as many of the members of the Lift Heavy Run Long Community at some of the events. Nothing makes us happier than to get an opportunity to get to know the listeners and participants so whenever you see any of us or the LHRL tent, please come by and visit with us. We look forward to seeing you! I hope you enjoy listening to the show as much as w
