    Leadership as a highly competitive marketplace So why does this notion of followership persist? One reason might be that although thinking people do not blindly follow, they might in practice take their cue from leaders about where to direct their attention, which then shapes where they put their energies.  This might be a more sensible and palatable treatment of the notion of followership.  But let’s broaden this out a bit and think not only about how senior leaders might direct our attention but also lets look at what else directs our attention in this way, because whether they like it or not, leaders operate in a highly competitive marketplace.

Steve Cokely passed away on April 11, 2012. Steve was born June 17, 2012, and was the father of 3 children. Steve Cokely is a political researcher and lecturer who has lectured nationally on political and economic issues especially as they relate to the Black community.

Our country was founded on African American labor. Slaves were often too expensive to kill so they had their personhood regulated. The measures that were taken include: theological support for African Americans either having no soul or only a soul and a body only fit for labor, anthropological beliefs that African Americans were non-human or barely human, and intellectual beliefs supporting African Americans being intellectually limited. The African American male body needed to created more workers (make babies), work hard, and endure hardship without complaint. Any desire or action for African Americans to assert their humanity was illegal like: running away, learning to read, speaking in their native language, organizing with others, and not having white permission to go and come. Although there were many views around African American folks, the one thing that held constant was the need for African American bodies to be alive and viable to help this burgeoning country turn a consistent profit. It is perfectly possible for a person to have all of the knowledge in the world, yet be unable to put it to any good use because he has no common sense whatsoever. Also, the inverse of this is possible; if someone has common sense but doesn't necessarily have knowledge, then he can probably make his way through life as long as he stays out of matters that require too much memorization and knowledge of facts.

Conscious rap is a sub-genre of hip-hop that focuses on creating awareness and imparting knowledge. Conscious rappers traditionally decry violence, discrimination, and other societal ailments. It's propelled by the conviction that radical social change comes through knowledge of self and personal discovery.

Colorism is prejudice or discrimination in which human beings are accorded differing social treatment based on skin color. The preference often gets translated into economic status because of opportunities for work. Colorism can be found across the world. The term is generally used for the phenomenon of people discriminating within their own ethnic groups. The term colorism refers to when lighter skin tones are preferred and darker skin is considered less desirable or darker skin tones are preferred and lighter skin is considered less desirable. In the United States, the phenomenon also occurs in other populations, such as among Chicanos and other Latinos, Indian immigrants and Caucasian Americans. The name pigmentocracy is given to a group-based social hierarchy based largely on colorism. Also labeled as colorism, which is more discussed than others, is the phenomenon of lighter-skinned people discriminating against darker tones within the same ethnic group.
