“My mission is to empower people to take control of their own health, well-being and fitness using simple breathing exercises proven to improve body oxygenation”. -Patrick McKeown Breathing. It's fundamental to human life, and we've been breathing air since moments after birth. It's so instinctual, we do it correctly right from the start - diaphragmatic breathing with the mouth closed. Like so many other aspects of life, though, many of us stray from this original, natural, and healthy behavior. According to Patrick McKeown, the derangement of our breathing process is at the root of many of the ills and ailments that are common today. Patrick McKeown is the author of seven books and the Director of Education and Training at the Buteyko Clinic International. The Buteyko method is a breathing technique used to help children and adults suffering from breathing problems including asthma, COPD, snoring, and sleep apnea as well as helping athletes improve performance. • 121: Chris Keyes — Editor, Outside Magazine

    23/12/2017 Duração: 01h32min

This is a particularly personal interview for me. Not the subject matter, but the broader context - the fact that the editor of Outside Magazine is on my podcast! You see, Outside Magazine has been my magazine "bible" since the early 1990's. It was THE place I turned for articles, inspiration, gear, adventure, and innovations. It was where I turned time and again for figuring out what to buy, where to go, and what sponsors to go after when looking for new gear for adventure racing. So when I found out that Outside Magazine, and in particular, the editor, Chris Keyes had contacted the Whole Life Challenge about participating in our event, I was floored. But wait, it got even cooler. Chris wanted ME (and Michael) to be on the Outside Magazine Podcast, and wanted us to come out to Santa Fe, NM to record it. So that's exactly what we did... and while there, I got Chris to hang out for a couple hours on Sunday to record this one. So... what do you talk about with the editor of a major magazine? Writing, journaling

  • 118: Dr. Anthony Gustin — (Only) You Can Fix Yourself!

    02/12/2017 Duração: 01h31min

We've all been to the doctor before. The typical advice that follows a cursory exam is basically, "do this for the symptoms," with little in the way of addressing the underlying issue. High cholesterol, for example, is a symptom, not an underlying issue — bringing down cholesterol is not the same as treating the underlying problem, if there even is one. Among the highly-educated is a tendency to believe that the answers are known. Dr. Anthony Gustin believes that this may not be the case, and the more he studies the less sure he is of any "knowns." As a child, Dr. Gustin thought it was normal to be sick often, overweight, ridden with acne, have constant joint pains, and be generally unhealthy. When he realized that he was in control of all that through diet and exercise, his life changed forever. Through many years of study and self-experimentation, Dr. Gustin developed a foundational support system for health and wellness. His longstanding pains went away, his mental performance skyrocketed, and his overall

  • 117: Tom Butler — Adaptive Contrast Oxygen Therapy with LiveO2

    18/11/2017 Duração: 01h58min

You know the numbers — you can go without food for three weeks, without water for three days, and without oxygen for just three minutes. With such a clear and constant need for oxygen, it is surprising that the oxygen debt many of us live with every day isn't addressed more in fitness culture. This episode is a conversation with Tom Butler, vice president at LiveO2 Adaptive Contrast Oxygen Therapy. Tom earned his bachelor's degree in environmental science at Virginia Polytechnic and his master of science in Oriental medicine at Southwest Acupuncture College in Boulder, Colorado. The positive effects he experienced from his very first exercise with oxygen therapy (EWOT) session convinced him this was something he needed to tell people about. [Note: For the complete set of show notes, links, and contact info, head to https://www.wholelifechallenge.com/podcast] An incredible ability to recover from workouts, the jump in his energy level, and a 30% improvement in his VO2 max all made Tom a believer. If you are cu

  • 113: Lorin Roche — You Might Already Be Meditating

    12/10/2017 Duração: 02h11s

“For people who live in the world and other people depend on, the goal of meditation is adaptation. It’s so that you thrive in your daily life.” “In a sense, in meditation, you are learning to hold your own self. Like, your soul, your scared human person, your aching heart, your exhausted body, your dreams, your love of the world. You’re learning to hold all that, with great tenderness, so that all the parts of you can come together and form an alliance, an internal team, because they all want to work together.” Did you realize that every time your breath cycles, you’ve experienced a tiny meditation? Inhaling, building tension, then exhaling and relaxing—this is the same pattern that occurs when one meditates, and meditation is as natural to the human body and mind as breathing.
