Lighthouse Bible Church Sunday March 8, 2020 Therefore, since Christ has suffered in the flesh 1 Peter chapter 4 and 5 1PE 1:1-9 As you may remember first Peter began by showing us the perfect inheritance that we as believers in Christ have reserved in heaven for us thanks to the love of Jesus Christ. In later chapters we learned about longing for Gods word, putting aside the old ways, being submissive and humble to authority, proper treatment of our spouses, among other things. The readers are exhorted that as Christs death put an end to his suffering for the sins of the world, they ( who have suffered from fleshly pursuits) should arm themselves with the same purpose (to be dead to sin) as Christ was. . Many commentators write them off as something that was inserted into the text later. The subject of chapters 12 - 14 is spiritual gifts. How the Corinthians were abusing the gifts. Chapter 14 is dedicated to convincing the Corinthians that the gift of prophecy was superior to the gift of tongues. Verses 34 and 35 are not a blanket statement about women's behavior generally. Chapter 12 addressed the common good of the body of Christ as a whole. Chapter 13 emphasized that all spiritual gifts must operate in love. Chapter 14:1-25 taught that prophecy was superior to tongues. Beginning in verse 26, he gave instructions to the saints at Corinth- concerning how they ought to use their communication gifts when the saints gathered together for worship. So these detailed instructions on tongues and prophecy are not applicable to our worship services today. There are five enduring principles at work here. Doesn't verse 22 say that tongues are for unbelievers, while prophecy is for believers? ALL scripture is God-breathed! (2 Timothy 3:16) 2Pe 1:20-21 There are TWO KINDS of unbelievers in view here in 1Corinthians 14:21-25. Verses 21-22 address unbelievers who remain outside the church. Verses 23-25 address unbelievers who enter into the church. They magnified the gift totally out of proportion. He has a problem with uninterpreted tongues in public worship. 1Co 14:13-15 Some, if not all, of the tongues speakers did not understand what they were saying! These tongues were spoken languages consisting of words. 1Co 14:19 When someone prayed in a tongue, their human spirit prayed but their mind was not engaged. The human spirit has a direct line to the Holy Spirit. That which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Spiritual thoughts become spiritual words. They revealed certain truths that God provided at that time for that audience. Time and time again, Paul has been urging them to stop being selfish and think about the needs of others. He speaks of love as the ultimate antidote to the selfish, boastful, thoughtless behavior of the Corinthian church. Verses 1-3 contrast the gifts without love and the gifts with love. Verses 4-7 describe what love does - and what it doesn't do. Verses 8-13 put the spiritual gifts in their proper place. It's nothing less than the love of God made visible in Christ Jesus. Daniel had so distinguished himself that Darius was planning to appoint him over his entire kingdom. Daniel would have to choose between obeying his God and obeying the king's statute. Anyone who makes a petition to any god or man besides you, O king, for thirty days, shall be cast into the lions' den. Daniel knew that the penalty for disobeying the king's injunction was death in the lions' den. He dropped to his knees like he always did, and gave the Lord thanks - like he always did.
