Stewart’s Pamphlets Program.” A'hearn shares with us an fascinating intriguing example of scripturalization as example of the layering of modern discourses including race, ethnicity, religion, and citizenship in the modern world.

Dr. Seth Perry (Princeton University) brings to us a presentation called “What Does It Look Like When God Cites Himself: The Revelations of Latter Day Saints Prophet John Taylor.” Perry presents a fascinating case study on texts as mechanisms of critique, community formation, and political ascendancy.

Dr. Jennifer Barry (Associate Professor of Religious Studies at University of Mary Washington) discusses her latest book, Gender Violence in Late Antiquity: Male Fantasies and the Christian Imagination (University of California Press, 2025).

Dr. Rachel Schwaller (University of Kansas) brings to us a presentation called “(Un)scripted (Un)settlement: Mapping the Language of Homeless Encampment in Lawrence, Kansas.” Schwaller blends archival work, ethnography, and GIS in a mapping of settlement and land ownership. She compellingly demonstrates that two-centuries plus of this discourse in Kansas suggests that settlement is a classification of human constitution and geographic place.

Dr. Bradford Anderson (Dublin City University) brings to us a presentation called "The Bible Beyond Reading: The Iconic, Contested, and Mediated Bible in Ireland” Homrighausen helps us explore the ways and reasons behind the intriguing scripturalization of Anderson takes a grounded theory approach to help us understand how the mediation of the Bible becomes and defines scriptural practices in modern Ireland.

Dr. Richard Newton kicks off this Sowing the Seed series with a discusion called with "Critical Comparative Scriptures: Introducing You and Your Subfield." Newton is Associate Professor and Undergraduate Director of Religious Studies at the University of Alabama. He is also the founding curator of Sowing the Seed: Fruitful Conversations in Religion, Culture, and Teaching.

Dr. Meredith Minister is Assistant Professor of Religion at Shenandoah University. In this episode we discuss the intellectual transition from theology to religious studies, graduate school to professorship and much more. She also helps us understand the role of the teacher-scholar in bringing theory to undergraduate students and using theory to understand our work in the classroom.

Dr. Nyasha Junior is Associate Professor of Religion at Temple University. A biblical studies scholar with interests in Hebrews Bible, cultural politics, and women and gender studies, Dr. Junior helps us think through how biblical studies scholars can engage their publics in a substantive way.

Dr. Phillip Luke Sinitiere introduces us to the story behind Lakewood Church, one of America's larges and most controversial congregations. Sinitiere is the author of Salvation with a Smile: Joel Osteen, Lakewood Church, and American Christianity (New York University Press: 2015).

Historian of American Religion, Dr. Edward J. Blum helps us read Jesus iconography to better understand the role race and the Christian faith have had in shaping the meaning ascribed to American bodies. Blum co-authored (with Paul Harvey) the acclaimed book, The Color of Christ: The Saga of Race in America (UNC Press, 2012).

Dr. Rita Shah(Elizabethtown College)discusses "law and order," the nature of crime, and the emerging field known as critical criminology. Shah is winner of the 2016 Praxis Award from the ASC's Division on Critical Criminology.

Acclaimed writer and biblical scholar Dr. Jennifer Grace Bird considers the possibilities for reading the Bible in light of modern ethics and historical insights. Her book, Permission Granted: Take the Bible Into Your Own Hands (Westminster/John Knox Press, 2015)inquires what the text says about women, sex, sin and more.

Photographer and Hamilton College professor Robert Knight shares insights gained from an aesthetic approach to religion. Writer and historian Dr. Kelly J. Baker discusses her insights into the Ku Klux Klan as a reflection of Protestant America's deep-seeded racism. Dr. Richard Newton and his Ethnicity, Gender, and Religion seminar speak with Dr. Baker about her award-winning book, Gospel According to the Klan: The KKK's Appeal to Protestant American, 1915-1930 (University of Kansas Press, 2011).
