This week on Radio Architecture, Ilana's guest is Michael Bialek. SJB founding director Michael Bialek started his career working with families wanting to build special homes, with real meaning to them. Houses perched on hills with distant views of the bay, or adjacent to a natural reserve or vineyard – these homes were realisations of people’s dreams. Over his 40-year oeuvre, Michael’s design philosophy is grounded in simplicity, crafting design responses that are unique to their location and generate public benefit. He has fostered a clear design direction and methodology of collaboration that has helped to build the practice we know today. His portfolio of acclaimed and award-winning projects includes multi-unit residential, commercial, hospitality and cultural venues. He is also an active member within the Australian Institute of Architects and Property Council of Australia.

Caitlyn Burt and Amir Shoenfeld are a pair of musical theatre creators based in London. Caitlyn is a Melbourne-born musical theatre Librettist, Lyricist and Dramaturg; Amir is an Israeli-born composer, songwriter, and music producer, with experience in musical theatre, contemporary dance, and pop music. Together, Caitlyn and Amir have created numerous musicals and songs, including punk/rock musical WHEN WE STRIKE, an all-female/non-binary celebration of the 1888 strike of the match girls, and their newest show in development OTTO WEIDT'S BRUSH AND BROOM WORKSHOP FOR THE BLIND. In this episode, they share their experiences of going from concept to creation, the reality of rewrites and trunk songs, and how creativity is essential enrichment for our lives.

Dr John Doyle is an Associate Professor in the School of Architecture and Urban Design at RMIT University, where he is the Associate Dean and Head of Architecture. He is a registered practising architect and director of Common ADR, a Melbourne based architecture firm. He is Immediate Past President of the Association of Architecture Schools of Australasia (AASA) – the peak body representing architectural education and the broader discipline of architecture in Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. John’s research practice uses architectural design tools to explore innovative models for urban design. He is the founder of the Super Urban Lab, and a member of the Post-Carbon Research Centre at RMIT University. Recently, his research has focused on high-density urban models to address the challenges related to climate change, as well as equity, affordability, and food security.
