Open Secret is a traveling series of online film screenings that relies on a fluid network of terminally online artists who seek (reveal? create?) meaning in the ubiquitous and endless stream of images that saturates us daily. Intimate home videos, commercials, curated selfies, or live war footage: these are images shared online with everyone, but Open Secret proposes that we actually watch them together, physically and on the big screen. Geert Lovink joins me in the studio for this new episode of Art in Permacrisis. Geert is a media theorist and the founder of the Institute of Network Cultures. He has a background in the Amsterdam squatting movement, he invented the notion of 'tactical media' several decades ago, and in recent years, he has focused on platform and social media critique. We talk about the violent turn of the tech overlords, technofeudalism, the question of tactical media today, antifascist figure design, and the special responsibility of art. Justin O'Connor is a Professor of Cultural Economy at the University of South Australia. Online video streaming, our medium of choice, is only behind AI when it comes to energy and computationally intensive technologies. This begs the question: can streaming become a sustainable practice, placing care for the environment, for hardware (from cables to cameras and servers), and each other before uncritical mass outreach and constant content production? How can streaming become a practice of solidarity that acknowledges its material, infrastructural conditions and limitations?
