Power and Primacy of the Pope, Part 3 (#12-21)
25/04/2026 Duração: 56minThe testimony of Scripture and the early Church do not support the Roman Bishop’s sole authority over the universal Church. Not only would it be impossible for one man to oversee every church, ordination, and doctrinal issue, but Scripture shows us that hope for the Church is founded in Christ’s oversight. When interpreting Matthew 16:18, “upon this rock”, the emphasis was not on Peter, but on the Church’s confession of the salvific work of Christ for the entire world. Rev. Dr. Jason Lane, Associate Professor of Historical Theology, Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, MO, joins Rev. Brady Finnern to continue our study of the Power and Primacy of the Pope. Power and Primacy of the Pope, Part 2 (#1-11)
18/04/2026 Duração: 56minThe papacy claims that one man is above all other pastors, his authority is in both Church and state, and everyone must acknowledge his authority in the Church in order to receive salvation. Melancthon carefully addresses each of these claims according to Scripture while acknowledging the inconsistencies found in the Church’s history. It is written by the LORD that each pastor is on equal footing, their ministry is that of service, and the Church has the authority by God’s Word. “Lord help us to live according to Your Word and confess the Truth, nothing more—nothing less. Amen.” Rev. Dr. Christian Einertson, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, Farmington, MN, joins Rev. Brady Finnern to study the Power and Primacy of the Pope. Power and Primacy of the Pope, Introduction
11/04/2026 Duração: 55minIn 1537, Philip Melancthon addressed the erroneous belief that the Papacy was required for salvation. The Gospel is not dependent on a certain human bureaucracy but only on the merits of Christ. The Pope is famously referred to as the Anti-Christ, which is difficult for our modern ears to hear; however, as we believe in the Truth of God’s Word, we confess to our hope being dependent on the cross and Christ’s empty tomb. Rev. Dr. Christian Einertson, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, Farmington, MN, joins Rev. Brady Finnern to begin a study of the Power and Primacy of the Pope. Review of the Large Catechism: History and Impact
04/04/2026 Duração: 56minThe Large Catechism was written like a sermon for the instruction of pastors and the laity. Almost 500 years later, the Church continues to be blessed by the simple, yet robust teaching as it preserves the Truth for generations to come. God’s Word forms the foundation of each part of the Catechism so that every person who reads, marks, and inwardly digests these riches always asks, “Is that being confessed according to the Word of God?” May the Lord bear fruit by His Word. Rev. Dr. John Maxfield, Professor of History and Religious Studies, Concordia University, Edmonton, Alberta, joins Rev. Brady Finnern to review the Large Catechism. The Large Catechism: Sacrament of the Altar, Part 4
28/03/2026 Duração: 58minThe Lord’s Supper is the true body and blood of your Lord Jesus Christ, under the bread and wine, given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. In this holy Sacrament, Christ graciously delivers to believers all the treasures of heaven: forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation. He invites weary sinners to come and find rest in Him. This gift is holy, divine, and given for you. We need not fear the Sacrament, for Christ’s body and blood are wholesome, pure, and comforting. They bring the fullness of His salvation, not judgment, to those who receive them in faith. As we examine ourselves, we repent and receive His gifts with joy. Christ Himself makes you worthy through His cross. Rev. Mark Bestul, pastor of Calvary Lutheran Church in Elgin, IL, joins Rev. Brady Finnern to conclude our study of the Sacrament of the Altar. The Large Catechism: Sacrament of the Altar, Part 3
21/03/2026 Duração: 55min“Do this in remembrance of me” is a gracious invitation for the New Adam. As disciples of Christ, we joyfully receive this gift for forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation. In faith, we receive the Lord’s Supper often, not making excuses, but clinging to the promises of Christ. Following His command to receive this gift, we examine our hearts and consciences and seek to be right with God. He gives Himself and we feast, knowing that it feeds our souls for nourishment to eternity. Rev. Mark Bestul, pastor of Calvary Lutheran Church in Elgin, IL, joins Rev. Brady Finnern to continue our study of the Sacrament of the Altar. To learn more about Calvary Lutheran, visit clce.org. The Large Catechism: Sacrament of the Altar, Part 2
14/03/2026 Duração: 56minThe body and blood of Christ is food for the soul that nourishes and strengthens the new man. As the baptized endure through their battle with the old Adam and the devil, the Sacrament provides daily sustenance and strength. The fruit of the Sacrament of the Altar is the Gospel for the Christian so that we may grow in faith, love, and holiness. In faith, we receive peace with God through His forgiveness and are renewed to fulfill our vocations in His power. Rev. Dr. James Lee, Associate Professor of Theology, Concordia University, River Forest, IL, joins Rev. Brady Finnern to study the Sacrament of the Altar. The Large Catechism: Sacrament of the Altar, Part 1
07/03/2026 Duração: 58minWe receive in the Sacrament exactly what Jesus tells us: the body and blood of Christ for our forgiveness. Martin Luther wanted to ensure that all who received the Sacrament understood and valued the gifts of Christ as they partook. He asked three important questions: What is the Lord’s Supper? What are the benefits? Who is to receive it? These questions are answered in a simple, thorough manner, not only to be faithful to the Word, but that everyone who comes to the altar may receive a clear conscience in Christ. Rev. Dr. James Lee, Associate Professor of Theology, Concordia University, River Forest, IL, joins Rev. Brady Finnern to study the Sacrament of the Altar. Large Catechism: Holy Baptism, Part 4
28/02/2026 Duração: 56minThe Christian life is nothing other than a daily Baptism. Baptism does not just happen to us; by it, the Lord transforms us by death and resurrection (Romans 6:3-4). We walk in our Baptism each day by living in repentance and the gracious forgiveness found in Christ. The Lord enables our faith to flourish as we mortify the flesh (Romans 8:13), turning to Him and trusting that His forgiveness in Christ is ours. “God’s own child I gladly say it, I am baptized into Christ.” (LSB 594, st. 1) Rev. Daniel Lewis, Assistant Professor of Theology, Concordia University, Seward, NE, joins Rev. Brady Finnern to conclude our study of Baptism as confessed in the Large Catechism. Large Catechism: Holy Baptism, Part 3
21/02/2026 Duração: 55minWe believe that Baptism is for all ages. Since Baptism is commanded for all nations (Matthew 28:19) and gives us the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38-39), we trust in the power of the Word as opposed to ourselves. The Word has power whether a person is 99 years or one day old. The Word does not become inconsistent or incompatible due to our response. We baptize for the sake of following Christ’s command and receiving the benefits He gives—no matter the age! Thanks be to God for this inexpressible gift! Rev. Daniel Lewis, Assistant Professor of Theology, Concordia University, Seward, NE, joins Rev. Brady Finnern to continue our study of Baptism as confessed in the Large Catechism. The Large Catechism: Holy Baptism, Part 2
14/02/2026 Duração: 56minThe power, work, profit, fruit, and purpose of Baptism is this—to save (Colossians 1:13-14; John 3:5; 1 Peter 3:21). The water is not mere water, but a life-giving fount for those who believe. Our identity is not as one who was baptized, but as one who is baptized into Christ and saved in body and soul. Although “new spirits” will desire to question the validity and efficacy of our Baptism, we cling to the simple Word of God and trust that His Word is beyond any human reason! Rev. Stewart Crown, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Palo Alto, CA, joins Rev. Brady Finnern to continue our study of Baptism. The Large Catechism: Holy Baptism, Part 1
07/02/2026 Duração: 56minTo understand Baptism is to keep the simple words of Scripture. Jesus commands Baptism (Matthew 28:19), Baptism is divine by water and the Word (Titus 3:5-8), Baptism brings salvation (Mark 16:6), and Jesus works through Baptism (Romans 6:1-4). In Baptism, we receive forgiveness, life, and salvation in Christ. Through the most powerful Triune name of the Lord, we have the assurance that His grace is sufficient. Rev. Dr. Steve Schave, Executive Director of Lutheran Association of Missionaries and Pilots (LAMP), joins Rev. Brady Finnern to study Baptism as confessed in the Large Catechism. The Large Catechism: The Lord’s Prayer: 7th Petition
31/01/2026 Duração: 54minThe devil is actively working in this world against the Word of God. He wants nothing more than for us to ignore the Word, hold onto a guilty conscience over our sins, and to question the full sufficiency of Christ’s cross. “Your will be done and not the devil’s!” is our prayer without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17-18). The Lord gives us prayer as a gift to be able to say with confidence, “Amen”, knowing that His grace is sufficient. Rev. Bob Hiller, pastor of Community Lutheran Church, Escondido, CA, joins Rev. The Large Catechism: The Lord’s Prayer: 6th Petition
24/01/2026 Duração: 55minTemptations are always before us. Temptation comes through the world, the flesh, and the devil. Although Christians will be tempted until Christ returns or calls us home, Christ does not leave us defenseless. He provides us with the armor and weapons to fight and gives us the victory (Ephesians 6:10-18). While temptations face each one of us, the temptations themselves will vary for each person. It is for this reason that Jesus calls us back to Himself in prayer. The resurrected Lord has already won our victory! Rev. Samuel Bobby, pastor of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Lincoln, NE, joins Rev. Brady Finnern to study the 6th Petition of the Lord’s Prayer. To learn more about Redeemer Lutheran, visit redeemerlincoln.org. The Large Catechism: The Lord’s Prayer: 5th Petition
17/01/2026 Duração: 54minAs it states in Genesis 6:5, the intentions and “thoughts of [our] heart[s] [are] only evil continually.” Without Christ’s forgiveness, we are sorely lost, thinking more highly of ourselves than we ought to think. As those who are redeemed, we cling to the promise of His mercy and go joyfully to Him in prayer with nothing but the certain knowledge of the forgiveness of sins. We receive this forgiveness on account of Christ, and it is on account of Him that we forgive others. Rev. Samuel Bobby, pastor of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Lincoln, NE, joins Rev. Brady Finnern to study the 5th Petition of the Lord’s Prayer. To learn more about Redeemer Lutheran, visit redeemerlincoln.org. The Large Catechism: The Lord’s Prayer: 4th Petition
10/01/2026 Duração: 57min“Our daily bread” encompasses everything we need for our lives here on earth. We give thanks to the Lord for all He gives to sustain this life, and we seek His grace for continued provision. In this petition, Luther especially highlights the need for good government for the sake of peace and protection. The Lord provides for all people, even those outside the Christian faith, and we pray that the Holy Spirit will provide the Bread of Life for their salvation. Rev. The Large Catechism: The Lord’s Prayer: 3rd Petition
20/12/2025 Duração: 56minWe seek God’s will, but the devil’s will is the exact opposite. The Lord desires us to have no other gods; the devil’s will is that we have MANY gods. We look to the Lord for the Gospel, faith, and the Holy Spirit as we realize that there is a battle raging. An unbeliever has no battle because the Word is not heard, but for the baptized there is a struggle. The struggle, however, is not more powerful than the resurrected Lord! He is our refuge, strength, and ever-present help in trouble. We come to Him in prayer and utilize His armor to stay steadfast in Christ. (Ephesians 6:10-18). Rev. We ask that He would give us His Holy Spirit to believe His Word. An earthly kingdom is found by the work of its people and by force. God’s kingdom is found by the work of God in Christ and by His grace. His kingdom is seen now by the Word, Baptism, and the Lord’s Supper. We anticipate beholding the kingdom that is yet to come, that we may keep our focus on what truly matters in this life! Rev. The Large Catechism: The Lord’s Prayer: Introduction, Part 2
29/11/2025 Duração: 57minPrayer is filled with promise. The Lord hears and answers us according to His gracious will. He provides us with the gift of the Lord’s Prayer, that we may confidently come to Him, knowing He will give us what we need. Our shelter and protection rests in our prayers as a weapon against the devil and the sinful world, not because of the prayers themselves, but because of the power of the One who hears. We can utilize His Word for prayer, especially when we are at a loss for words. It is His Words that give us the Holy Spirit and provide a clear conscience in Christ. Rev.
