If you take away the Bible, and you’ve taken away the entire Christian message. Yet lot of confusion exists today about the Bible. According to a 1996 Barna survey, 42% of Americans say they believe that the Bible is the literal word of God. Yet almost half of Americans believe that the Bible is too hard for them to understand, so on given week very few people actually read the book they claim to embrace as God’s literal word. Clearly there’s a discrepancy between what we say we believe and our true beliefs as demonstrated by our actions. This series is designed to help people understand the basics of the Christian faith--to tell the world --in a way that people can understand and make sense of. This sermon explores what Christians believe about the Bible.

The wind was getting stronger and the waves were getting bigger. The disciples were straining at the oars when they see something even more terrifying than the growing storm. They see Jesus walking toward them ON the water! His intent, of course, is not to frighten but to rescue. Jesus climbs in the boat and the wind immediately dies down. His terrifying appearance was actually an act of love. God’s love can sometimes be a terrifying thing. It breaks into our lives in unanticipated and unexpected ways. It shatters our assumptions and threatens our worldview. It often stirs things up before it calms things down. But just like the disciples, we are in desperate need of it.

"Encounters by the Sea: Experiencing Provision" : Finding themselves surrounded by thousands of people, in an isolated location, and in desperate need for food, the disciples are understandably alarmed. Their communication to Jesus is not so much an appeal for provision as it is a declaration of the obvious. They are overwhelmed by the scarcity of resources and eager to send away those who have gathered to hear Jesus teach about the kingdom. Overcoming a “scarcity mentality” can be difficult. It is much easier to focus on what we don’t possess than on what we do. It is even more challenging to re-imagine what God can do with that which is entrusted to him and blessed by him.

A father whose daughter is dying. A woman who has been suffering with an illness for twelve years. Two people desperately in need of Jesus. Both who demonstrate persistent faith as they pursue Jesus and seek his help. Faith is not passively acquiescing to the circumstances of life. Faith is the persistent pursuit of Jesus. It is fighting through the “crowds” and, at times, ignoring the counsel of those who have lost hope, believing that Jesus’ presence will make a difference
