Sinopse

LWAF stands for Long Winded as F#@%. Because when we get together we have a lot to talk about. The podcast is Nick and Joe, longtime friends and lifelong film fans, clear out their Netflix queues and discuss what they've watched. There are so many films on Netflix and we decided to give ourselves a reason to watch them and get together to discuss them. We hope you enjoy the talks and the show.

    This week we explain why we are ending the show and say good bye…oh and also discuss the film we have been avoiding for over a year. We discuss the Victor Fleming, David O. Selznick classic Gone With the Wind. We were both impressed with the vast and ambitious production but we have some issues with the content of the film. Then we say goodbye to you the listeners.   • EP 76 Voyeur (2017) & Tucker & Dale vs. Evil (2010)

    First up is the new, with a discussion of the Netflix original documentary Voyeur. A bizarre story about the famous journalist and author Gay Talese and his expose of a man that bought a motel for the express purpose of watching the hotel guests. It is a crazy story that is well crafted. Next we talk about the cult classic Tucker and Dale vs. Evil. Joe has been told to see this film by many friends and he finally uses the podcast to sit down and catch up with the horror / comedy cult favorite. Next we go back to a segment we call Movie Memories, where we discuss memorable movie going experiences from our lives. Nick talks about the vivid memory of seeing Revenge of the Jedi as a child. While Joe discusses the first time he saw Raging Bull with his co-host. Plot twist, Nick has no recollection of this event. We have a special announcement for the end of this week's show.   • EP75 April and the Extraordinary World (2015) & Carol (2015)

    This week we have two very different films on tap. First we discuss the French animated film April and the Extraordinary World (2016). The film has a unique style that combines a steam punk aesthetic with an anime sensibility. Taking place in an alternate timeline the film is set in the early 1940's where steam powered technology is still the dominant technology around the world. While April is a young scientist looking for a formula that gives the recipient immortality. Then we discuss the Todd Haynes film Carol (2015). A love story set in the 1950's between the sophisticated and confident Carol and a young store clerk named Therese. Joe and Nick come down on different sides of this well crafted movie. Next we have our I'm Right You're Wrong quiz show. This is a speed round style quiz where Nick and Joe quiz one another about all things film. Nick has dominated these contests and this week is no different. Then as usual we head back to the Netflix library to pick our films for next week. Nick wants to watch

  • Episode 74 The Way Back (2010) & Let it Fall (2017)

    This week we discuss the Peter Weir film The Way Back (2010) a film starring Ed Harris, Colin Farrell and Jim Sturgess about seven escapees from a Russian gulag in the 1940's. Then we discuss the John Ridley documentary Let it Fall (2017) about the conditions and decisions that led up to the 1992 LA riots.  Next we have our longest running segment called Hidden Gems. Nick and Joe discuss films that they feel are under-appreciated. Nick has a French Canadian film called Starbuck while Joe has a bit of tie-in because it's title is so similar The Way Way Back. Then as always we select our films for our next episode. Nick has a French animated film called April and the Extraordinary World while Joe has a well received drama called Carol.

    This week Nick and Joe look back at the films they watched in 2017. We discuss some of the worst films, our biggest disagreements and we each select our Top 5 films of the movies we discussed. Last year we had similar Top 5's with a flip flopped 1 & 2. This year we have 9 different films in our Top 5's combined. So we had a lot of films that we appreciated and wanted to recognize. Then we pick two new films for our first show of 2018. Nick selects the Peter Weir film The Way Back (2010) and Joe selects the John Ridley documentary Let It Fall: Los Angeles 1982 - 1992 (2017).   • Episode 72 It's a Wonderful Life (1946) & The Bishop's Wife (1947)

    This week we are joined by special guest, Sally Hallada to talk about a couple of Christmas classics. First we finally get to a classic that Nick hasn't seen when we discuss, It's a Wonderful Life (1946). Sally and Joe were already admirers of the film and Nick was taken with it after his first viewing. Then we discuss a perfect Christmas companion with a discussion of The Bishop's Wife (1947). The story of a Bishop that asks for his prayers to be answered and what he gets is not exactly what he had hoped for. Next we add to the ever growing list of films that we are embarrassed we have never seen. Sally has a relatively new film that she had never caught up with, Joe has a classic western and Nick has another Christmas classic in mind. Then we look ahead at our next show and it's a perfect time to look back at the movies we liked the most with our personal Top 5 lists from the LWAF films of 2018.

  • Episode 71 Frank (2014) & Big Eyes (2014)

    This week we head back to the Netflix library and select a couple films to discuss. An unplanned theme quickly reveals itself as both films are about artists and the challenges of creating art and what happens when that art is put out in the world. First we discuss the Tim Burton film Big Eyes (2014). Starring Christoph Waltz and Amy Adams the film is about Margaret Keane and her husband who took credit for her big eyed paintings. Next we discuss Frank (2014) a film about an eccentric rock band that performs avant garde music but is changed when a new ambitious keyboard player joins the band. The film stars Michael Fassbender, Domhnall Gleeson, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Scoot McNairy.  Next we unveil a new segment called Movie Memories. Where we go back through some of our most memorable movie going experiences. Joe discusses how American History X was a life changing film for him. This week Anthony Starke is back to discuss the classic western The Wild Bunch, which none of us had seen. A film with no good guys or bad guys, the complex and masterfully made film gives us plenty to discuss and Anthony once again has plenty of stories to tell from his long and varied career.  Next Nick, Joe and Anthony discuss even more films that they are embarrassed they have never seen as the EAF list continues to grow. Then we go back to our usual format as we go back to the vast Netflix library to select two films to discuss on next weeks show.

This week we discuss the Billy Wilder classic Double Indemnity and we are joined by professional actor Anthony Starke. With over 30 years of acting experience and having had a role in the stage play "Billy & Ray" (about the writing of Double Indemnity) he was the perfect guest for our discussion of the classic film noir. With plenty of insights and even more fascinating stories Anthony kept us entertained during our discussion of the Billy Wilder classic. Next Nick, Joe and Anthony discuss their favorite film noir films and Joe can't help but bring up one of his favorite noir parody Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid. Next week we will conclude our Embarrassed as F#@% episode with our discussion of the Sam Peckinpah classic The Wild Bunch.

    We continue our Halloween special with special guest Ian Malcolm and a lively discussion of the critically acclaimed It Follows (2013). A film that has many of the same tropes and themes as the original Halloween but sets it's story in contemporary Detroit.  Next we discuss our scariest scenes. We go over the scenes that had an effect on us through the years weather they scared us, grossed us out or just stayed with us over the years. And we will be off next week as we are moving to a every other week format but will be back Nov. 12th with one of our Embarrassed as F#@% episodes, where we watch and discuss films we are embarrassed we have never seen. Next episode we will also be joined by special guest, long time actor Anthony Starke.

    This week we welcome special guest Ian Malcolm (@siriandangerous) from the Busted Wide Open - Pro Wrestling & WWE Podcast and we discuss a couple of horror films. Because Ian is not only a wrestling fan but also a devoted horror buff. First up is a classic in the slasher genre with a look at the 1978 film Halloween. Joe an Ian grew up horror fans so this is a revisit for them but Nick is viewing it for the first time. The discussion is so jam packed we have to save our next film for next week. Next week we continue our Halloween Spooktacular special when we discuss the critically beloved It Follows.     This week we discuss the meticulous and ever stylish director Wes Anderson with his film, Moonrise Kingdom. A story of two tweens, first love and the dysfunctional adults that surround them. As always Anderson brings his instantly recognizable style as well as charming and complex characters. Next we discuss a documentary about the most corrupt police officers in the history of New York city, in a story that can only be called jaw dropping. The brazen criminal cops at the center of the story go to the most extreme lengths to enrich themselves and defy the oaths they swore. Next we go to a segment called Take My Money. This is a segment where we talk about films we would love to see get made. Nick would love to see a film… While Joe has always wanted to see a series about the birth and death of the California Gold Rush. Then we discuss our upcoming Halloween themed Spooktacular.     After a brief hiatus we are back talking movies. This week we go back to the vast Netflix library and discuss two films that both hosts eagerly anticipated. First we discuss the sequel to the beloved Pixar film Finding Nemo, with Finding Dory. A beautiful film that takes you back to the under water world and to the characters you love while mixing it up enough to make it feel fresh. Then we watch the biopic film of the self proclaimed "founder" of McDonald's and how he came to own and grow the ubiquitous burger franchise. Next we go back to Hidden Gems segment while Nick suggest you watch a French made film called Welcome to the Sticks. While Joe suggests a documentary about an infamous lawsuit against McDonald's called Hot Coffee.   • Episode 64 Shimmer Lake (2017) & The Stanford Prison Experiment (2015)

    This week we discuss Shimmer Lake (2017) & The Stanford Prison Experiment (2015). Shimmer Lake is an interesting crime thriller of a small-town bank robbery and the unraveling of the mystery as we learn everyone in this small town is connected in some way. The film is also told in reverse, so there is a lot to digest. Then we discuss the fascinating dramatization of the infamous Stanford Prison Experiment. It was a study where young college men take part in a psychological experiment as they assume the roles of prison guards and prisoners to horrifying results. Both films are interesting, worth watching and available on Netflix. Next we go to a newer segment Whatever Happened To? Where Nick and Joe discuss some of their favorite character actors and what they are up to now. Nick wants to find out more about Greg Kinnear and Joe is curious about Jeanne Tripplehorn.     This week we discuss the animated film Ernest & Celestine (2014) about an unlikely friendship between a bear and a mouse. Based on a popular French children's book this beautifully animated film was originally made in France and re-voiced and released in America as well. Then we discuss the acclaimed film Lion (2016). The true story of Saroo who grew up in India and when he was separated from his family he was shuffled through the orphanage system and eventually adopted by a couple from Australia. Later as an adult Saroo is haunted by his past and returns to India to find the family he lost as a young child. Next we have our Big Boys Don't Cry segment. Where we discuss films that have made us shed a tear. Joe takes a nod from Lion and wants to discuss another film adapted from a memoir with the film Wild. Nick goes with a segment from the animated film Fantasia 2000. Next we go back to the vast Netflix library to select two films for next week.   • Episode 62 The Fundamentals of Caring (2016) & Okja (2017)

    This week we discuss two Netflix Originals and we are impressed by both films. First we discuss The Fundamentals of Caring (2016). Paul Rudd plays a care-giver that takes his teenage patient on a road trip to expand his world and give him some real world experiences. Next we discuss Okja (2017) a powerful film about a super pig and the young girl that raised her until they are separated by an evil corporation. I know I am tired of that same old story too! Next we go to our Hidden Gems segment where Joe discusses a Jake Gyllenhaal film from a few years back called Nightcrawler. While Nick wants to discuss a film that is a bit older called Sneakers. Then as always we go back to the vast Netflix library to select a couple of films for next week.

    First we discuss Dr. Strange (2016) starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton and Chiwetel Ejiofer in one of the most recent chapters in the Marvel-verse. After losing the use of his hands in a car accident renowned surgeon Dr. Strange delves into a world of magic and mysticism to get his life back. Then we discuss the Netflix Original, The Discovery (2017) starring Jason Segel, Rooney Mara and Robert Redford. When a scientist discovers definitive proof of an after-life society takes the news to the extreme and waves of suicides begin around the globe. Next we discuss some of our cinematic Pet Peeves. Joe wants to discuss when characters are resuscitated and are back to normal in no time. While Nick has a gripe with misguided red herrings in thrillers. Then as always we choose our films for next week. Nick selects The Fundamentals of Caring and Joe chooses Okja. Watch those films on Netflix and tune in next week.

  • Episode 60 Dear Zachary (2008) & The Verdict (1982)

    This week we discuss two films that look at the many problems in our legal system. First we discuss the documentary Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father (2008). A heart wrenching story about a man that was killed by his estranged girlfriend who at the time was pregnant with his child. The story continues to unfold and goes in many surprising directions. Next we discuss the Sidney Lumet film The Verdict (1982) starring Paul Newman. The story of a down and out lawyer that gets a soft ball case put pushes it to trial and tries to get everything his clients deserve. Next we play our latest game Highest / Lowest where we try to guess the highest and lowest rated films in and actor or filmmakers filmography. Nick will try and guess Sidney Lumet's and Joe will take a stab at Paul Newman's. Then as always we select our films for next week.     This week we go back to our Embarrassed As F#@% films. This is the running list of films that we are embarrassed that we've never seen. This week we discuss one of the films from Joe's list once again with Some Like It Hot (1959). An iconic comedy where Tony Curtis and Jack Lemon go on the run from the mob and have to dress as women to join an all woman's jazz band. They both end up trying to get the attention of one of their band mates played by Marilyn Monroe. It's hilarious and defies the conventions of it's day.    Next we return to our ever growing Embarrassed As F#@% list and name some more films that we are ashamed we've never seen.    Then we go back to the vast Netflix library to pick two films for next week. 

  • Episode 58 Handsome (2017) & Mindhorn (2017)

    This week we discuss two films that are Netflix exclusives and both are absurd comedies involving murder mysteries. First we discuss a film written and directed by Jeff Garland called HANDSOME (2017). Garland plays a detective named Gene Handsome who is investigating the murder of his new neighbors nanny. Then we discuss a film from England called MINDHORN (2017). The film is about a long forgotten former TV star who is called out of obscurity to reprise his old role to help solve a murder. Next we have our Hidden Gems segment and both Nick and Joe have picked films that fit perfectly in this crime/comedy themed episode. Joe thinks that The Nice Guys (2016) is underappreciated while Nick thinks not enough people have seen Murder By Death (1976). Then for next week we will return to an Embarrassed As Fuck episode to discuss a film that Joe is, and should be, extremely embarrassed he's never seen. Next week we will discuss the classic comedy Some Like It Hot (1959) starring Tony Curtis, Jack Lemon and Marilyn M
