Denial of Christ deserves judgement. But all sin is denial of Christ (not the same as saying all sin is equal). For Christians, saved by grace, judgement ensures justice will be done on earth, but also keeps us personally cautious and corporately concerned.

Following Jesus Christ—God’s Son—means not only going up the mountain to witness His glory but entails following Him down to the valley of suffering, death, and (eventual) resurrection.

We ask God to contend for us (He does). Jude asks us to contend for God. Contending for God sometimes includes apologetics and evangelism. But here, contending for God is about our holiness. The standard for our holiness is God’s holiness.

We are dependent. All of us. That we are independent, self-made, strong—its all an illusion. As Paul, who tried to enter Asia, and was prevented by God, will tell you, we don’t go where we want to, we are allowed, much like the children who come to Jesus. And like those children, and as any of you can tell anyone around you, we don’t choose what comes our way in this life, Kingdom or otherwise, we receive it. Not always thankfully. We are not in control. We are not independent.

We don’t know our neighbors. But are called to love them. The Good Samaritan story is told to illustrate this. But the story does much more, modeling how Christ transforms us into people capable of loving—people he calls: “neighbor.”

Wilderness is a disruptive and destructive force in the world and in our lives. Biblically this is true. We look to powerful people to stop a spiritual force. They can’t. We look to scripture for a God who does (and he ultimately will), but we first find a God who does his work within the wilderness. Making a way where there seems to be no way.

God is immense. All that immensity is wrapped up in the person of Jesus, and in those who are one with Jesus. Sometimes we don’t feel that fullness because we chase satisfaction instead. But like Christ, we should embrace God’s fullness, and be thankful because of it.

God still speaks, though sometimes we don’t know it is God speaking. God speaks through phenomena. God speaks through dreams and visions. God speaks through angels. God speaks audibly. God speaks through humans. And God speaks in a still small voice. The right posture is: Speak Lord, for your servant is listenting.

Allen Black gives us part 4 in this study of the book of James. Believing that real faith is more than just belief and must result in action, the brother of Jesus wrote a guidebook for living the life of faith. He calls us away from our double-mindedness to a pure devotion that changes our lives and the lives of those around us. He encourages us to live as friends of God and not as friends of the world. This lesson tonight focuses mostly on the passage about anger found in James.

Former Highland preacher, Harold Shank, joined us for our 90th Anniversary. He delivered a message about the wonders of God. God can do the impossible and he often does that through improbable people.

Culture thinks sex is good, and often the church says the opposite. But sex isn’t good or bad, its holy. Sex is the union of body and soul, a physical act with spiritual permanence. Jesus warns us about this, but statistics of sexual addiction are rampant. So 1) we & others do get hurt by our sexual sin of our bodies, 2) our bodies are eternal and 3) our bodies are not our own. Accountability helps to control our bodies for the sake of our souls.
