This blue pill is used as a Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, or PrEP, as the latest way to fight the spread of HIV. The drug is called Truvada and it’s being taken by men who have sex with men and who are HIV negative as a way to protect themselves. But in 2013, it all changed when Robbie came out and became the first out gay man to play on a U.S. professional sports team. Robbie visited Santa Rosa this month to talk with teens at Santa Rosa High School about his story and his new book, “Coming Out To Play.” This month, Robbie stopped by to talk more about his experience growing up, his passion for soccer, and what it’s like now to be “out” in professional soccer. In the second half of this show, we talked with a married couple from Minneapolis who are Christian Pastors. What’s most unusual is that they are both “out” gay men. 27/10/2014 Duração: 01h01minThis month we traveled to Denver, Colorado for the 2014 Matthew Shepard Foundation Honors event. It was 16 years ago this month that Matthew Shepard, then 21 years old, was abducted from a bar, tied to a fence, viciously beaten, and left to die. His death started an international discussion about hate and LGBT rights. 11 years later, federal hate crimes legislation was expanded to include sexual orientation in Matthew’s name. Shortly after their son died, Judy and Dennis Shepard created the Matthew Shepard Foundation. This annual fundraising gala, held in Denver every October, honors individuals who have made a difference for LGBT people. This year’s honorees included Matthews Place youth blogger, Jamie Kruze, activist Leslie Herod, professional basketball player Jason Collins, and actor Stephen Fry. The pursuit of civil rights for LGBT people continues today at a pace faster than any other civil rights movement in history. This month we talked with two campions for LGBT civil rights, two straight allies, who have come together from opposite sides of the political spectrum to focus on bringing marriage equality to every state in the United States. Attorneys David Boies and Ted Olson opposed each other in the now famous Bush Vs. Gore Supreme Court case, but teamed-up to defeat California’s Proposition 8 in the same court. 28/07/2014 Duração: 59minA new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that new HIV diagnoses among gay and bisexual men between the ages of 13 and 24 increased by a staggering 132.5 percent between 2001 and 2011, But the annual diagnosis rate for the general American population dropped by a third over the same time period. We’ve learned a lot since HIV was first identified, and we are learning more every day on how to best prevent new infections. Since 1983, Face to Face has addressed the ever-changing challenges presented by the HIV epidemic in Sonoma County. There mission is ending HIV in Sonoma County while supporting the health and well-being of people living with HIV/AIDS.
