Glenn recently returned to Sonoma County after living in Texas where he was immersed in the local gay community. They talked about their project and interviewed a trans man who is one of their fellow students. He shared his personal story discovery and talked about some of the challenges he faced with during his transition. The LGBT Studies Program at Napa Valley College is one of only three like it in California. The program offers a certificate and a two-year degree in LGBT Studies. We talked with experts on both topics this month starting with Cynthia Deitle, a former FBI agent and now programs director for the Matthew Shepard Foundation. She lead hate crimes investigations for the FBI and now trains law enforcement on how to document and report hate crimes. Okan Sengun is the CEO and co-founder of the LGBT Asylum Project in San Francisco. He is an immigrant from Turkey. As a gay man, he fled his home country and now helps LGBTQ people who flee to the United States for safety to get asylum. They give their own time and money to produce one event each month at different locations throughout Sonoma County. There is no obligation or event cost – just show up and meet some great people. GayDar is working with Sonoma County Pride to help produce our annual celebration and this year they are expanding. If you are interested in getting involved in this year’s Sonoma County Pride celebration, attend the monthly planning meeting on the first Tuesday of every month at the Fountain Grove Lodge. He’s had many new beginnings this year and has been touring around the country sharing his life story in his music. He even performed, for the first time, at a naturist retreat and discovered some things about himself that he shared with us on the air. You’ll also meet Brandon Sokolowski, an Air Force veteran, who came out while serving our country just after the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy was eliminated. I met Brandon when he was just coming out and caught up with him years later to discover he is now a dancer and designer of his own clothing line. 29/10/2018 Duração: 01h01minOctober 12, 2018 marks 20 years since Matthew Shepard died from wounds he sustained during a vicious hate crime in Laramie, Wyoming. His parents were never able to lay him to rest out of fear his grave site would be vandalized. This year the Shepard’s were invited to lay Matthew to rest in the safety of the National Cathedral in Washington D.C.. On Friday, October 26, 2018, an interment service was held at the National Cathedral. An audience of 2000 people, including Matthew’s family, was lead by Bishop Gene Robinson and others in a service that brought Matthew’s remains to their final resting place. It was a touching, powerful, and emotional service and this month we share the music and some of the powerful moments from the service. Our very first pilot show featured staff and members from Positive Images and their board president, Christian Sullberg, and his husband, Ozzy Jimenez, who is the Positive Images fundraising chair, joined us to celebrate and to provide an update on all Positive Images is doing to support LGBTQ youth. This organization has been serving Sonoma County for almost 30 years and was the first to do so for LGBTQ youth in the region. We also talked with LGBT Liaison Officer James Gonzales from the San Jose Police Department. LGBT Liaison Officers are not common positions, especially here in the North Bay. Every department should have one because in every jurisdiction, LGBTQ people live, work, and need services from police. 24/09/2018 Duração: 01h03minThis month we talk with two of California’s most prolific legislators, Assembly Member Evan Low and Senator Scott Wiener. Both are out gay men and working hard to promote LGBTQ equality in California. Evan Low was elected to the California State Assembly in November 2014 to represent District 28. At the age of 31, Assemblymember Low became the youngest Asian American legislator to have been elected to the Assembly in state history. The district is located in Silicon Valley and includes Campbell, Cupertino, Los Gatos, Monte Sereno, Saratoga, and the areas of West San Jose, Willow Glen, Cambrian, and Almaden Valley in San Jose. Assemblymember Low chairs the Business and Professions Committee as well as the California Legislative LGBT Caucus. In 2015, together with Assemblymember Ian Calderon (D-Whittier), he launched the first in the state California Legislative Technology & Innovation Caucus.
