  • Animation that helped us through lockdown - Dreaming Machine 02

    04/10/2021 Duração: 44min

So this is an interesting episode we recorded at the tail end of the last UK ‘lockdown’. We first discussed animation we had re-connected with to help us through the situation, and then new shows and films we had gotten into.  At the time of writing lockdown is no longer the status quo in the UK, but it is still the norm elsewhere in the world and the episode provides a still-resonant analysis of ‘comfort viewing’.  Plus there are of course a great range of animation tips for you to check out! Or let us know your thoughts if you are already in the know… Timestamps (after any adverts): ‘Re-connection’: ·       1:30 – Aria the Animation ·       7:45 – She Ra and the Princesses of Power ·       13:05 – Neon Genesis Evangelion (and other ‘apocalypse’ shows)    ‘New’: ·       18:40 – Totally Spies / Carmen Sandiego / Kim Possible  ·       23:35 – Harley Quinn ·       33:58 – Disney films (Bambi / Basil the Great Mouse Detective / Black Cauldron / Hercules / Zootopia / Treasure Planet)

  • Keyframe 141 - Dragon Ball Super // Samurai Warriors

    01/04/2019 Duração: 01h03s

Burly Men With Powers The last decade has seen many changes in mainstream media, but possibly the most surprising has been the massive rise in popularity of superheroes - thanks in no small part to the MCU, the DCEU, and Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. What’s interesting though, is that superheroes have always been popular in animation. From Western cartoons like X-Men, Justice League Unlimited, Spider-Man and The Incredible Hulk, to anime titles like Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, Casshern, One-Punch Man and My Hero Academia.  So how do superheroes fit into the modern animated landscape, and what actually counts as a superhero when it comes to anime? Andrew and Rob don their toughened spandex (no capes!), and head for the mean streets of animation to find out.  After that it’s back to business as usual with a look at some of the things we’ve been watching, which this week are Dragon Ball Super part 6 and the anime adaptation of Koei Tecmo’s Dynasty Warriors spin-off - Samurai Warriors. If you've e

    22/03/2019 Duração: 01h28min

Let's Talk About Conventions One of the highlights of any anime fan's calendar is the convention, where like-minded people gather together to cosplay, shop, listen to panels, enjoy the atmosphere, and even possibly meet the odd voice actor. They've become a staple of anime communities all over the world, but could they be better? Join Tucky (owner and organiser of conventions), and Rob (long-time critic and attendee), as they have a chat about how anime conventions could grow and evolve. Then it's business as usual with our regular look at some of the things we've been watching, and kicking things off is the anime version of the Battle Girl High School social network game. After that it's time for a couple of book to manga to anime adaptations, starting with some historical fantasy in The Heroic Legend of Arslan before moving on to something more supernatural in Occult;Nine. • Keyframe 139 - Alita: Battle Angel // MFKZ // Darling In The FranXX // ...

    09/03/2019 Duração: 01h16min

Massive Robots Fights Are All You Need The Hollywood adaptation of Yukito Kishiro’s hit manga Battle Angel Alita (Gunnm), is out in cinemas, and by all reports it’s doing some decent business. Join Tucky and Rob as they discuss the film that James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez have created, the implications of the film’s success, and some possible titles that could be adapted in the future.  After that it’s time to talk about the other things that we’ve watched, which this week include genocide and the forced enslavement of mysterious animals in Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us, the bizarre and stylish feature-length adaptation of Guillaume "Run" Renard’s surreal science fiction comic MFKZ, and the equally bizarre butt-handlebars in Darling In The FranXX. • Keyframe 138 - Mob Psycho // Food Wars // Overlord II // ...

    01/03/2019 Duração: 01h18min

After School Goth Club This week it’s anime all the way as Tucky, Mark and Rob get several shows out of their systems, and kicking things off is series two of the show that’s basically catering porn - Food Wars! The Second Plate.  After that it’s time for some painfully secret high school experiments (and other stuff), in Kiznaiver, and a dive into the dark fantasy world of Overlord II to watch some lizard-men in their native habitat before we head to outer space for some giant robot on giant robot action in Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt: December Sky. Rounding things off is the anime adaptation of ONE’s psychically charged hit manga series Mob Psycho 100. • Keyframe 137 - The Ancient Magus' Bride // Amanchu!

    20/02/2019 Duração: 58min

Somewhere Over The Redub Subs versus dubs.  It’s the oldest continuing debate in anime, and with a variety of arguments for and against one or the other, it doesn’t look like ending any time soon. But there is one particular aspect of the debate that’s often overlooked - songs - and with that in mind, Andrew, Tucky and Rob decide to investigate whether songs in anime should be redubbed into English.  After a rousing discussion it’s back to our usual business of what we’ve been watching, which this week are part 1 of the stunning adaptation of Kore Yamazaki’s (Frau Faust), hit supernatural folklore story The Ancient Magus’ Bride, and the anime version of Kozue Amano’s (Aqua, Aria), scuba diving slice-of-life manga Amanchu! 09/02/2019 Duração: 01h18min

Bardock's Geordie Genes Computer graphics have become the norm in animation thanks to their versatility and efficiency, but there are certain types of CG animation that some people just don't like. With that in mind, Rob and Andrew investigate cel-shaded CG animation and some of the possible reasons why it divides opinion.  After that it's business as usual with our usual look at what we've been watching, which this week include the Dragon Ball TV Specials, Reign of the Supermen - DC's feature-length animated sequel to The Death of Superman, No Game No Life: Zero, and the anime adaptation of the mobile game Granblue Fantasy. • Keyframe 135 - Coming Up in 2019

    31/01/2019 Duração: 01h03min

It’s a new year, so we decided to out some of the more notable titles scheduled for release in 2019, which for some reason leads Tucky and Rob on to a discussion about judging things too soon or based on little evidence (also know as a knee-jerk reaction). After that we return to Hinamizawa for more Groundhog Day-style psycho-children adventures with the Higurashi: When Cicadas Cry Kai (season 2), and Rei (season 3 … technically). • Keyframe 134 - 2018 (The Good Side)

    20/01/2019 Duração: 01h27min

Now that we’ve got all of the bad stuff from the last year of animation out of our system it’s time for the Keyframe gang to talk about the good things that were released during 2018.  With that in mind, gather round fellow fans as we take a long and somewhat complicated look back over the previous year. Also this is not a “top ten” as we absolutely definitely have a lot more than ten titles, and each of us has our own lists …  See what I mean about complicated? 14/01/2019 Duração: 01h06min

It’s the end of another year in animation, so join Tucky and Rob as they cast their collective nostalgic gazes back over the medium of animation during 2018 … Just kidding. That show is next week.   This episode is dedicated to all of the things in animation that tried to make their mark, but failed for one reason or another. With a selection of pithy-sounding awards, welcome to the bad side of animation in 2018! 03/01/2019 Duração: 01h14min

Beyblade: The Japanese Conkers Live-action/animation crossovers have been a part of film for since the advent of The Enchanted Drawing back in 1900, and with Pokémon: Detective Pikachu due for release in 2019, Tucky, Andrew and Producer Rob discuss the new addition to the franchise - which leads to a discussion about the history of live-action/animation crossovers in film. After that it’s time to suggest some anime, cartoons or video games that could be successfully adapted for live-action or live-action/animation. Then it’s time for our usual round-up of things we’ve been watching, which this week include Fireworks: Digimon Tamers and Makoto Shinkai’s 5 Centimetres Per Second. • Keyframe 131 - K: Missing Kings + Return Of Kings // Girlish Number // One Piece

    27/12/2018 Duração: 01h11min

Gangs of Akihabara So Goku makes an appearance at the Macy’s Day Parade. Is it really big news as some reports suggest, or is it merely another sop to fans? Join the Keyframe gang for an interesting and divisive discussion about very large balloons before they leave the parade grounds to find out what’s been happening in the ongoing “divorce” between Funimation and Crunchyroll.  After that it’s time for our featured anime, and this week we’ve got Andrew trying to figure out K: Missing Kings and K: Return of Kings. Then it’s Tucky’s turn to find out what it takes to be an idol and voice actress in Girlish Number, before Producer Rob closes proceeding with One Piece Collection 20 and one of the best arcs in the series - the Paramount War.  If you've enjoyed this podcast then please share us with your friends or leave us a rating on your podcast app of choice. • Keyframe 130 - The Big Bad Fox ... // Twin Star Exorcists // Smartphone // ...

    12/12/2018 Duração: 01h16min

Those Goofy Cave People On this episode of Keyframe, Tucky and Producer Rob attempt to unpick the Academy’s “For Your Consideration” list of animated feature films that are in the running to receive a nomination for an Oscar. Join them as they get wax cynical about the awards, lament the fact that great movies like The Breadwinner and A Silent Voice didn’t get the attention they deserved because Disney/Pixar made a film about a kid who wants to be a musician and that is somehow more compelling than a film about the causes and consequences of bullying or trying to be female in Taliban controlled Afghanistan … breathe … You get the point. Anyway, ignoring the fact that many deserving films have historically been almost criminally under-represented simply because they weren’t American or British, this year makes for interesting reading at the very least. After that it’s time for our featured animations, which this week are the isekai, harem, romantic comedy, fantasy In Another World With My Smartphone, t

  • Keyframe 129 - Higurashi (Season 1) // Yu-Gi-Oh!: Pyramid of Light

    30/11/2018 Duração: 01h33s

Muffin-Topping Into Mainstream My Hero Academia has been a huge success as a series, but it’s the remarkable success of the Two Heroes movie that has Tucky and Producer Rob thinking about the changing perception of animated feature films in the West. This naturally leads to an interesting discussion about anime movies in general, live-action adaptations in the west, and our suggestions for titles that could make the transition from Japan to Western live action TV or film - which include titles like Patlabor, Eden of the East, Black Lagoon, Monster, Golgo 13 and Shiki. After that it’s time for our usual look at some of the titles that we’ve been sent, which this week are Higurashi: When They Cry and Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie: Pyramid of Light. • Keyframe 128 - The Breadwinner // One Piece // Dragon Ball Super // ...

    11/11/2018 Duração: 01h02min

Dragon Ball's Time Trunks We’ve got a packed episode this week as Producer Rob kicks things off with One Piece Uncut - Collection 19 (episodes 446 to 468), which fans will know is the end of the Impel Down Arc and the beginning of the Marineford Arc (also known as the Paramount War). After that it’s over to our resident DB correspondent Andrew who has Dragon Ball Super parts 3, 4 and 5 before Tucky joins the fray with the harem romantic comedy And You Thought There Was Never A Girl Online? Rounding things off is something beautiful and serious that deals with the horrors of living in under a brutal, zealous and xenophobic regime, the trials and tribulations of being female in such a place, and the salvation that can be found in family. Based on the best-selling book by Deborah Ellis, The Breadwinner is uniquely poignant, masterfully animated, acted and directed, and sometimes almost painful to behold. • Keyframe 127 - Matoi The Sacred Slayer // Disenchantment // Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust

    15/10/2018 Duração: 01h01min

The Weird Faces of Matt Gurning This week Tucky and Producer Rob forego the usual niceties and get right down to business, and leading the animation charge is the surprisingly decent magical girl series Matoi The Sacred Slayer. After that it’s the turn of Disenchantment - Matt Groening’s new Netflix series - to be put under the microscope before we end with the bluray release of the seminal anime movie Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. As always, we try to be as serious about animation as possible but we feel that it is our duty to warn you that this episode contains gurning, nagging left hands, breaking of dimensions, happy-yet-unholy romances, “raising” of the dead, Whitley Bay vampires, Exing and more. 07/10/2018 Duração: 59min

Bishounen Mutants Things get a bit contentious this week because Tucky went to see Teen Titans Go! To The Movies, and now he’s got to convince Producer Rob - who is notorious for his hatred of things like Teen Titans Go! And Ready Player One - to give the animated film a fair chance. After that argumentative start it’s time for all things anime with The Asterisk War, Flip Flappers (seriously, who comes up with these names?, and Heaven’s Lost Property. • Keyframe 125 - Black Clover // Final Space

    27/09/2018 Duração: 53min

The Hokage of Middle Management Anime is serious business (allegedly), and as if to highlight this point, Tucky joins fellow anime/animation nerd Producer Rob for an extended conversation about the trials and tribulations of voice acting, the future of the U.S. dub of One Piece, and what could be done to ensure the successful future of Western voice acting for anime. After that it’s time to find out why Black Clover Season 1 isn’t Naruto (and why we should stop thinking it is), and explore the wonders of Netflix’s Final Space (which, now that we say it, sounds a bit dodgy).
