  • EP-324 | Patrick Kinsella - Ranger, Afghan Female Tactical Platoon (FTP)

    Patrick Kinsella spent 1 deployment in Iraq and 4 deployments to Afghanistan while serving with 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. His time in SOF had him trained with K9s, and conducting nighttime raids on HVTs and Mi-17 crashes. But, he'll quickly share that some of his best time was as a contractor in Afghanistan where he trained the Afghanistan Female Tactical Platoon (FTP) who is tasked with supporting the Afghan Special Security Forces during counterterrorism operations, specializing in searches, interrogations, and medical assistance.     Throughout Thomas Bryant's time in the Army, he has come to find his resiliency has taken him on a never-ending battle to be the best he can be when facing any new challenge. In 2006, Bryant was wounded in an ambush during his first deployment to Afghanistan with this unit, the 173rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team. He was sent to Germany where he would spend a year in the Warrior Transition Unit. There, it was found he had cancer for the second time, he said.     We recently had the privilege of having access to the U.S. Army's 5th Ranger Training Battalion which teaches the mountain phase of Ranger School. For several days we not only participated in several training events, but we also had the pleasure of sitting down with some of the units finest non-commissioned officers. Dan Ryan is the First Sergeant for A Company, 5th Ranger Training Battalion, at Camp Merrill in Dahlonega, GA. He joined the U.S. Army as an infantryman and after attending one station unit training (OSUT), the combat arms version of basic training and advanced training, at Fort Benning, GA, he then went on to attend airborne school, and then Ranger Assessment and Selection Program (RASP). He has spent time in 82nd Airborne Division, 10th Mountain Division, USAEUR, and 5th RTB over year career, including 4 combat deployments.     On January of 2019, Meyli Chapin was trapped in a hotel room in the DusitD2 in Nairobi for seventeen long hours while Al-Shabaab terrorists attacked the property. She was completely alone, and certain she was going to die. However, thanks to the incomprehensibly brave men who fought to get us out, led by now-retired UK SAS (Special Air Service) operator Christian Craighead, hundreds were extracted to safety. After the attack, though, PTSD made Meyli so miserable that she started to wish she had died after all.     The call to adventure was persuasive, drawing Alan into the special operations community as an MH-47 pilot with the prestigious 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR). Hard work and relentless training vaulted him to the top of his peer group as a Flight Lead and standardization instructor pilot. His experience and leadership traits put him at the forefront of several clandestine special operations, some still too classified to discuss in an open forum. The attacks of September 11, 2001, prompted the creation of a robust and deadly special operations force: Task Force Dagger. Alan C. Mack, Callsign Razor 03, led a team of MH-47E helicopters and armed MH-60s. We touch on this mission about the Horse Soldiers of 5th Special Forces Group Operational Detachment-Alpha (ODA) 595 where he provided aviation support, and a few other operations.     Cardia Summers joined the U.S. Army under an option 40 contract (Ranger), but experienced a setback. He didn't let that setback stop his goals and instead finally passed the Ranger assessment to join 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment as a paralegal. After transitioning to a unit in Vicenza Italy, he was partying with buddies a little too hard and received a DUI. After separation from the Army, he took his experiences to create a company that he hopes will help others from obtaining a DUI.

    Ron O'Ferrall is one of the most laid back guys you'll ever meet. Until you strike up a conversation about his past, you'd never know that he grew up in a rough neighborhood while in his youth, where family members and friends were joining gangs and death and fear were always close by. His father was a Vietnam Vet who served in a long range reconnaissance patrol (LRRP) and he was typically inserted well behind enemy lines. Ron's situation at that time could have taken several turns, and he knew that he needed to find a better future or else he would share the same fate as those around him. He shares his story of joining the U.S. Army, with time in 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, as well as his successes and failures in and out of service.
