  • AGFL Episode 90: Peter Defty, VESPA Power Products, and Optimizing Fat Metabolism

    In this episode, Colin and Elliot have the pleasure of interviewing Peter Defty, president of VESPA power products, and one of the pioneers in fat-adapted performance. This work, first on himself beginning in the early 2000s, and subsequently with athletes he coached, eventually led to some stunning athletic performances all based upon optimizing fat metabolism. Peter pioneered the concept of fat adapted performance in 2000 first personally, then using running friends as guinea pigs, then professionally when he joined VESPA. These products ‘jump start’ fat metabolism for steady, sustainable energy flow, blood sugar stability thus eliminating the dreaded bonk. Using VESPA, GI issues are virtually eliminated because the body no longer has to rely on consuming a lot of calories, which are a primary trigger for GI issues.     In this episode, Colin recaps his stellar performances at both Ironman Maine 70.3 and Age Group Nationals in Milwaukee this past weekend. Colin broke the tape at Maine 70.3 finishing seconds over the four hour barrier! He had a strong all around performance with our Every Man Jack teammate, Luke Creger, finishing second overall just over a minute behind him. This past weekend at Age Group Nationals, Colin took 2nd in his age group at the Olympic distance. On Sunday, he won his age group in the sprint and became an Age Group National champion!     The triathlon season is in full swing and Elliot and Colin recap their first triathlon races of the year. Elliot had an outstanding race at Victoria 70.3 last month, finishing 3rd in his age group and 10th overall. His wife, Becca, took another overall female win! Unfortunately, Colin has dealt with some nagging hip issues and had to withdraw midway through the run at Western Mass 70.3. He remains in good spirits and is optimistic about his hip pain as he quickly has to rebound and prep for his next race (and also a new bike!) in the Netherlands tomorrow (IRONMAN 70.3 Westfriesland). His major races included the St. George Ironman World Championship and Kona World Championships; he also took the overall win at 70.3 Timberman! Elliot raced frequently and often including four 70.3s, three Ironmans, a marathon, and a number of local short-course events. He finished the season ranked 22nd in the M35-39 in 2022.     In this episode, Colin and Elliot have the pleasure of interviewing Steve Lovelace, one of the first paratriathletes in the sport. Steve nearly died while chopping firewood with a friend in a remote field in Oklahoma at the age of 20. In what can only be described as a freak accident, Lovelace became trapped when part of the tree split in half, catching him and pinning him between the trunk and the ground. With the weight of the massive tree slab crushing his body, it took two hours for his friend and a local farmer to free him with a chainsaw. When he arrived at the hospital, the doctors weren’t sure he would survive. He did survive, but his injuries were extensive: A shattered wrist. A broken back. Both of his upper and lower jaws were crushed, the roof of his mouth split open. The swelling in his back so severe it caused temporary paralysis. The facial damage was so horrific, his appearance so altered, that surgeons used his high school senior portrait as a template as they worked to piece the bones bac

    In this episode, Colin and Elliot interview Matthew Marquardt, one of the top amateur triathletes in the country. In 2022, he took the overall wins at Ironman Texas, Eagleman 70.3, Ironman Lake Placid, and Ironman World Championship (and third at the 70.3 World Championship in St. George!). Matthew began competing in triathlons after completing his run as a collegiate swimmer during his undergraduate studies at Princeton University; he is currently pursuing his career as a surgeon and studying at the Ohio State University. With encouragement from his coach and some reflection, Matthew realized that triathlon was an opportunity too good to pass up. They decided that he would train hard over the winter (~17-25 hours per week), see how the 2022 season went and if things went well, he would turn professional for the 2023 season.
