  • Environmental Storytelling

    02/12/2017 Duração: 56min

In this episode, Paul, Jimmy and Glen try to come up with their own definition of Environmental Storytelling. They prattle on about hypothetical game situations and also talk about environmental storytelling in specific games. Glen and Paul agree to disagree about the exact same thing. Jimmy uses an environmental storytelling technique to add depth to his Dungeons and Dragons campaign. They circle around a sort of definition of what environmental storytelling is and end up with a pretty solid understanding of it (we think). They also debate on how difficult it must be to create environmental storytelling in a 2D game as well as praise current and past developers for putting that challenge on themselves. • Micro-transcations

    18/11/2017 Duração: 52min

In this episode, Paul and Jimmy talk about micro-transactions; both within the current events unfolding around Star Wars Battlefront II, and about some other games that also have micro-transcations. No Glen this week, to quote him, "My mind is mush," so we can't have any mush minds on this podcast! Paul brings Jimmy up to speed about the seething hatred of Reddit versus EA/DICE's newest Star Wars game. Jimmy recalls a certain gametype in Halo 5 that possibly has a pay-to-win model implemented. They discuss the differences between pay-to-win microtranscations and the simpler aesthetic and quality-of-life microtransactions. The topic of microtranscations and post-release downloadable content is very broad and they end up branching off into different styles of games such as mobile games and Free to Play games such as Path of Exile, Dota 2, and League of Legends. Paul talks about Overwatch loot crates. Paul and Jimmy both yearn for times when games were complete at launch. Ultimately, the best case scenario is th

  • Miyazaki Movies

    04/11/2017 Duração: 58min

In this episode, Paul, Jimmy and Glen speak on the topic of films made by Studio Ghibli but more so by the director Hayao Miyazaki. The dudes talk in depth about what feelings are brought up by these powerful movies and how they've had an impact on their lives as well as the entirity of Anime. Glen becomes a concept. Paul brings up the Hobbit again. Jimmy remembers being a twerp in malls. They end up getting into a deep conversation about human emotion and the condition of enjoying something for the sake of enjoyment. • Amnesia: The Dark Descent

    29/10/2017 Duração: 54min

In this episode, Paul, Jimmy and Glen revisit a horror game that still holds it's own. SPOILERS AHOY (If you've never played Amnesia, give it a go. It's a great game)! They discuss many aspects about the game from simple mechanics to overarching thematical elements. Paul is unphased by scary games and his gamer-instincts kick in to "beat the game." Glen gets fucked up from 5 minutes of Amnesia. Jimmy has to dig up old memories of playing Amnesia the first time. They end up a little off-topic at the end: talking about all things from clowns to Phoenix Wright. Happy Halloween!   Twitter: https://twitter.com/metadpodcast Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/metadpodcast/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCs8LhMbixxYCrIvx1Dv5btw Intro/Outro Tunes: John Kim --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/metad-podcast/support

  • Gaston (and other villains)

    21/10/2017 Duração: 01h07min

In this episode, Paul, Jimmy and Glen talk about one of the oldest and most hotly-contested debates: whether Gaston is actually the hero of Beauty and the Beast. The dudes kick things off with spicy discourse about the new and old Beauty and Beast films (both animated and live-action). After a good amount of time is spent on this topic the boys switch gears to talk more about the overall topic of compelling villains in all types of media. We mention a lot of series in this episode so make sure to check it all out to find out our opinions on what makes a compelling villain. Glen also breaks down and talks about the villain running the US as of late. • Metroidvania Games

    15/10/2017 Duração: 52min

In this episode, Paul, & Jimmy (sans Glen this week) return to form to talk shop about the sub-genre of Metroidvania games. Paul and Jimmy played Castlevania: Symphony of the Night a couple years ago and share some memories about that. They both agree that the Metroidvania style of gameplay is very fun and rewarding. Paul loved Super Metroid and Jimmy loved Metroid Fusion so they talk about the elements in those games that stuck out to them. They both have played (or beaten) Ori & the Blind Forest and were so excited to see the culmination of so many good elements in a metroidvania style. In a true return-to-form they talk about everything from minute details to grand schemes in relation to the Metroidvania style. Jimmy embarasses himself publically with singing (linked on twitter) & Paul recommends a steam early-access game (Dead cells).  Twitter: https://twitter.com/metadpodcast Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/metadpodcast/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCs8LhMbixxYCrIvx1Dv5btw Int

  • Game Replayability

    07/10/2017 Duração: 59min

We're back! In this episode, Paul, Jimmy and Glen REALLY get back into the swing of things by talking about games that they can always return to (or in some cases never return to). Jimmy talks about finding deeper meaning in Wind Waker. Paul talks about RPGs that have little details that are often missed on a first playthrough. Glen reminisces about getting punched in the head by his brother over Simpson's Road Rage. The guys deeply apologize for the hiatus and hope to get back on some sort of schedule soon. They reach a sort of conclusion about the different types of games that have maximum replayability and wax nostalgic about Final Fantasy Tactics. 13/08/2017 Duração: 01h05min

Paul grew up with this game series and is very knowledgeable of the series overall. Jimmy has watched Paul play countless hours of Suikoden and Suikoden 2 and was ready to play himself. Glen chimes in sometimes to keep the conversation on track. • E3pisode (E3 2017)

    16/06/2017 Duração: 01h17min

In this episode, Paul, Jimmy, and Glen discuss the biggest video gaming expo that happens every year: The Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3. They all agree that per usual there are some better presenters than others but overall what they've seen at E3 this year excites them for the rest of the year. They focus on Nintendo as a fan-favorite and because they're really excited for Breath of the Wild DLC. Paul and Jimmy distrust marketing tactics that try to exploit the audiences but also can't come up with better ways to convey gameplay to the masses. They take the ideas behind Sea of Thieves and try to make a better game (Cool Games Inc. style). It's expo time for the most current topic the boys have ever discussed! Stop releasing Skyrim!! • Puzzles, Platformers and More Part 1 - With Special Guest Karl

    26/05/2017 Duração: 01h09min

In this episode, Paul, Jimmy, and Glen along with special guest Karl talk about teaming up to go to a real "Escape Room" and how that experience was similar and dissimilar to playing 3D puzzle platformers such as Portal. The boys get a bit philosophical today while talking a bit about what makes a puzzle a puzzle and how solving something in real life has different rewards than solving a puzzle in a video game. This episode can count as a sort of "primer" for next week where we'll be talking specifically about a few of our favorite 3D puzzle platformers: Talos Principle and The Witness. Both the Talos Principle and The Witness make us very excited for the genre of 3D puzzle platformers and we'll ride that proverbial airplane until it crashes and burns. • The Halo Series

    19/05/2017 Duração: 01h25min

In this episode, Paul, Jimmy, and Glen talk about all things Halo. They focus mainly on the games that were made by Bungie but also quickly touch on Halo 4 and 5 made by 343 Studios. Overall, the gang is way more familiar with the original trilogy and have cherished memories about the 3 Halos. Halo Reach and ODST are also very good games that get a little discussion. They make dirty jokes at the expense of Nathan Fillion's good name and also try their hardest to get those dank cereal sponsorships. It's time to finish this fight for the last time maybe. • Path of Exile - With Special Guest Tom

    12/05/2017 Duração: 01h19min

In this episode, Paul and Jimmy, along with special guest Tom, talk about a game they all hold near and dear to their hearts: Path of Exile. No Glen this week for forseen reasons but he will return next week! This episode has a wide range of knowledge about the game from Tom who has clocked in thousands of hours to Jimmy who has played a bit but sucks and gets frustrated too easily. Paul loves to mess around with non-ideal builds and Tom plays for keeps. The boys find a double entendre in the developers "Grinding Gear Games" that blew their freaking minds. They talk a lot about how amazingly "cool" and fun the game is and how accessible it is to anyone. If you haven't played Path of Exile and like video games that take you on amazing journeys then you are missing out on a very unique (and very well developed) gaming experience.  Go play Path of Exile: https://www.pathofexile.com/game  Or on Steam: http://store.steampowered.com/app/238960/Path_of_Exile/  Tom's Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvjw16UA
