As the world waits with anticipation for the pending puff of smoke up the Sistine Chapel chimney, Bible believers are waiting for a much larger billow of smoke to ascend from the Vatican City. Pope Benedict XVI’s surprise resignation draws attention to the blasphemy of the Catholic System as it elevates a man in the place of God on earth.

The Vatican and the Jewish people have always been enemies, are still enemies and will always be enemies. In fact, the Vatican is probably the biggest enemy that the State of Israel has today. Welcome to another edition of the Bible in the News, this is John Billington with you.

This week has seen the world mark Holocaust Remembrance Day, 68 years after the liberation of Auschwitz in 1945. But while the gas chambers are now empty, and the ovens cold, anti-Semitism remains endemic amongst the nations of the Earth.

Reading through the various reports, analyses and comments about Israel's recent election and its results in the media, we would be led to think that some kind of collusion or conspiracy among the mass of Israeli voters had somehow brought about the results. For example, as one report put it: "On Tuesday Jan. 22nd, 2013, the Israeli voter told the politicians that it was time for another shake-up, the second in Israel's 63 years of statehood."

As 2013 begins we find ourselves in a world that is still politically and economically very unstable. We know that things can change in a moment. This instability and the potential disasters which could either be caused by man, or by the Almighty, create a sense of fear in people - and for good reason.

Whenever we read the Bible, it is vital to let God teach us, rather than us attempting to teach Him, by forcing His word to fit what we think. It’s all about humility before our creator, and being “swift to hear, slow to speak” (Jam1v19).

In the backdrop of the recent terrorist attack on Israel by the Palestinians, and Israel's response has yielded an historic vote in the United Nations. In the face of all truth and reality the world has voted to legitimize the Palestinians with Observer State Status, held also by the Vatican.

This Wednesday evening, the top two stories on the BBC’s news site were; "Israel Kills Hamas Military Chief" and "UN Admits It Failed Sri Lankans". These two reports may seem entirely unconnected, but together they demonstrate the fulfillment of God’s word and signal that Christ will indeed establish his rule upon the earth.

The United States is considered one of the most powerful nations and the election was watched with interest from all over the world. Obama retained his position as president for another term. American democracy is held up as a model to be aspired to and America "the land of the free", the nation where dreams can be realized.

Hello and welcome to another Bible in the news, this is Matt Davies joining you from Ramot, on the Eastern side of the sea of Galilee in Israel. The top stories on the news stations here are linked to events occurring in the Gaza strip and their connections with the Sudan in Africa.

Bible Prophecy is used in a sensationalist manner by many, which may have a certain simple instant gratification and wonder to begin with, but is quickly forgotten. For example, after the famous incident on September 11, when the twin towers fell, there was an obscure paragraph purportedly written by Nostradamus, which made the rounds. With language that could in fact be describing many wars, it was claimed he predicted the fall of the twin towers. This kind of sensationalism which is often carried by the media, has the long term effect of discrediting the word of God and the study of Bible prophecy. Most wouldn't even take it seriously anymore.

This week saw Russia and Iraq forging a new relationship built on traditional values. Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Al-Maliki visited Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin where they worked out deals on two major issues: Energy Development and Military Arms.

The news this weekend of riots by Muslims on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, draws our attention to the long history of the site and its relevance in Bible prophecy. Hello again, this is Paul Billington commenting on this week's edition of the Bible in the News.

In about 584BC, Nebuchadnezzar II, the king of the Babylonian Empire, had a strange dream, recorded in Daniel ch2. He saw a metallic image, whose golden head, we are informed, represented his own great kingdom (v38). The silver breast and arms, and the brazen belly and thighs represented the empires that would follow on (v39). These are named explicitly, in Dan 8v20, 21, as the Medo-Persian and the Greek empires, respectively.

Deadly protests, riots and the storming of American embassies that started on September the 11th in Egypt have quickly spread to Libya, Tunisia, Sudan, Yemen, Lebanon, Gaza, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Morocco, Israel, Iraq, India, Indonesia and others. Worldwide tensions rise over Iran as Canada shuts down the Iranian embassy. This is David Billington with you for the Bible in the News. Canada has taken a bold position. Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister said in a statement: "The Iranian regime is providing increasing military assistance to the Assad regime; it refuses to comply with UN resolutions pertaining to its nuclear program; it routinely threatens the existence of Israel and engages in racist anti-Semitic rhetoric and incitement to genocide; it is among the world’s worst violators of human rights; and it shelters and materially supports terrorist groups, requiring the Government of Canada to formally list Iran as a state sponsor of terrorism under the Justice for Victims of Terrorism Act."
