Bible In The News

The past few weeks have seen hostilities escalate in the Middle East with Turkey and Russia almost going to war in Syria. A ceasefire has been agreed to, and nations are celebrating peace, but the Bible clearly points out what is coming is war. 

As we come to consider the Bible in the News this week, we observe a world further gripped in fear of the Cornavirus and world financial markets that have been thrown into uncertainty as a result. We are also watching heightening tensions between Turkey and Russia in northern Syria, where Russia has the upper hand, wondering where that will end up, and of course the ongoing developments in Israeli and US politics leading up to elections in those countries. The King of the Universe is continuing to work out His purpose and so we wait to see what may develop from these things that is of consequence to the end time events that God has told us about in His prophetic word.

Hello! This is the Bible in the News brought to you this week by Paul Billington, speaking to you from Jerusalem, Israel.Once again we visit the Land of miracles, the Land whose miracles are being continuously revealed, showing the hand of the Lord at work in moving forward his purpose of restoring again the Kingdom to Israel.

There are now almost 70,000 confirmed cases of the new novel Coronavirus “COVID-19”. It has caused 1669 deaths and cases have popped up all over the world. It has caused economic distress in China and affected stock markets across the globe. There is no doubt that this new virus has already changed the course of world history and it may yet have much greater effects.

The Bible in the News has rightly focused our minds on the events on the West Bank in Israel, Russia’s moves in Syria and Britain leaving the EU. The geopolitical events of the world have been momentous! All of these events point to us living in the ‘last days’, the days just before the return of Jesus Christ to this earth.

Its finally happened! 11PM on the 31st of January 2020. In dramatic scenes, Britain has left the European Union vindicating the faith of Bible believers and signalling the soon return of the Lord Jesus Christ from heaven.

Trump’s peace plan has been long awaited, but is finally to be released later this week.  We do not yet know the full details to his plan, and it is likely that it will be rejected by the Palestinian leadership, but it is rumoured to have contingencies in it that would allow Israel to take unilateral action such as annexing certain parts of the West Bank if the deal is flatly rejected.  

Torrential rains have brought flooding and devastation to Israel, but also added to the vital waters of the Galilee. If you saw the news of this recent flooding in Israel, it may have reminded you of some of the narratives in the Bible, Sisera’s chariots being stuck as the river Kishon overflowed it’s banks in the battle of Mount Tabor, or after the great drought, when Elijah ran before Ahab’s chariot along the plain to Jezreel.

The events in Iraq, and through the Middle East this week have the world media reeling, politicians scrambling for contingency plans, and many people holding their breath wondering what happens next. As Bible students, we have confident anticipation of what is coming. The Bible clearly lays out the roles of Russia, Iran, Israel and the other players in the Middle East. We are seeing the nations moving into their Biblically appointed roles. 

The ayes finally have it in the British Parliament following last weeks landslide election, giving the go ahead for Brexit on January 31st next year.

Israel’s hung political situation due to election results, is having some unintended results. It doesn’t look like it is going to end anytime soon, Israeli media is calling it a 99% chance that Israel is going back to elections for a third time, probably sometime in March. The next few days will determine that for certain. Due to political posturing Naftali Bennett became Israel’s defence minister on November 12 — just under a month ago. The defence ministry is a sought after and very important portfolio, especially so in Israel. Naftali Bennett had tried to get the post previously, but had been turned down by Netanyahu. Now he has been appointed to the job in the intern government headed by Netanyahu of the Likud party. Bennett is from the small New Right party. Naftali Bennett is more right wing and a national religious Zionist.

Russia's religious revival is creating a symphony between church and state in Russia, both working with similar aims. This was foreseen by Bible students who have been looking for these events since the 1860s and even predicted the religious revival of Russia when atheistic communism was in full force during the cold war. 

"I will plant them in this land assuredly with my whole heart and with my whole soul".  God's declaration of intention to "settle" Israel... Surely His hand is now visible in action.Here is a video version (sorry about the spelling error, it should read, "God is Doing it with his Whole Heart..."):

In these dramatic events of 30 years ago, climaxing with the fall of the Berlin wall in November 1989, we were given a rare glimpse into the political influence and methods of the Vatican as a democratic upheaval brought about the collapse of atheistic communism in Poland and then in the Soviet Union making way for the unification of Europe.

France’s president has told the world NATO is brain dead. He is proposing a European Army in its place. He is also calling for Europe disengage with America and to engage with Russia as a strategic partner in Europe. 

Lebanon and Iraq, nations that escaped the Arab Spring are now experiencing significant uprisings. Turkey, the national remnant of the Ottoman Empire has flooded over its border into Syria engaging in warfare against the Kurds. The UK Guardian posted an article today with the headline, "Frustration and anger fuel wave of youth unrest in Arab world”. The article focuses on discontent in the Kingdom of Jordan. It’s eight years since the Arab Spring. Will this be an Arab Autumn?

The news from Britain is getting very repetitive, and so much so that the public are getting sick and tired of it. Why listen or watch the news about politicians fighting it out over so-called “Brexit?” The public know what they want and they voted for it, but the political establishment, who think they know better, deny it them. So what can we make of it in the light of the Bible?

Welcome back to Bible in the News after another roller-coaster week in the Brexit saga! We started the week with a Brexit deal looking like a distant dream for Boris Johnson, but early yesterday rumours began to surface that a deal had been reached between the two sides.
