  Sometimes the road does not journey in the direction one has chosen. It has twists, turns, and open space at times ultimately leading us in the direction of truth. For the ninth consecutive month, cost of living has been on the rise. New reports now show that the cost of living has once again risen by approximately 0.5% in March. While unemployment continues to drop and more people are starting to find jobs, it is still difficult for them to keep up with the increasing costs. Due to the rise in the cost of fuel, several industries are suffering and in an effort to continue making a profit, many of these industries have no choice but to pass on the higher costs, onto their customers. Fuel cost has contributed towards increasing cost of manufacturing, transportation and, operations. As a result, even food companies have started to suffer and a few months ago it was reported that food prices were at an all time high. This still continues and based on the current consumer index, cost of food has gone up once again. This will certainly hurt the economy and slow down the progress even further. While Americans are able to make a living, it seems that they are not making enough

The first popular use of the term "Black Power" as a social and political slogan was by Stokely Carmichael (later known as Kwame Toure) and Willie Ricks (later known as Mukasa Dada), both organizers and spokespersons for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). On June 16, 1966, after the shooting of James Meredith during the March Against Fear, Stokely Carmichael said: Stokely Carmichael saw the concept of "Black Power" as a means of solidarity between individuals within the movement. With his conception and articulation of the word, he felt this movement was not just a movement for racial desegregation, but rather a movement to help combat America's crippling racism. He was quoted in saying: "For the last time, 'Black Power' means black people coming together to form a political force and either electing representatives or forcing their representatives to speak their needs."[6]

We need to talk about this population more often and come up with solutions to help them secure employment. The reality is that more and more people with criminal histories are trying to enter the work force but failed background checks keep thousands of people from getting hired, some for offenses that are decades old and as minor as disorderly conduct, drinking and having too much fun in the street with friends. Some of those being denied work have never been convicted of a crime, only arrested.   As a community, we should do our part to educate ourselves. Where we complicate things is not learning and not practicing safety. We must protect ourselves because statistically, Black men and women are found to be having unprotected sex with others who have HIV/AIDS or other STDs (sexually transmitted diseases), and/or are sharing drug needles with someone who does.

On the heels of the execution of Troy Davis who many believed to be innocent, and the larger backdrop of the dismal state of Black manhood in the United States, all roads leads to Philadelphia from October 7-9 for the sixteenth anniversary of the historic Million Man March and Holy Day of Atonement.   The weekend commemorates the 1995 mass call from the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan for Black men to commit to atonement, reconciliation and responsibility in the way of God, self, family and community. The invitation drew two million men to Washington, D.C., and is a spiritual and positive historical milestone for the Black male experience in America.
