John 18:1-27 // Dakota DietzWhat do you do when you fail? How do you respond when others, or even God, apparently fail you? As John records this gospel he wants us to know that Jesus’ death was no accident or failure. He is in complete control throughout his entire betrayal and arrest, and succeeds in his goal. John has intertwined Jesus’ story with that of his disciples, particularly Peter, who is also on trial as well but fails at every turn. He has no idea what’s going on here and at each point he falls short. At almost every turn, there’s trouble — something to worry about it. In these moments of trouble — moments of worry, frustration, and anxiety, we want to know: Is everything going to be okay? How can it possibly all be okay? No matter what you’re facing. Jesus says to you: Everything is going to be ok. The key marker for Jesus’ followers is love, but this love is not a squishy, abstract feeling. It is raw feet-washing, humiliating love. This may be one of the easiest teachings of Jesus to mentally grasp, and yet one of the hardest to genuinely live into. It is easy to become overwhelmed by options and choices. Sometimes we are paralyzed not wanting to commit to anything because we’re afraid something better might come along. But this is the recipe for deep unhappiness in life and in our relationships. When it comes to Jesus, it can be tempting to keep our options open. What are you most afraid to lose? Family, reputation, relationship, financial stability, an addition, success, health, and long life. What if Jesus asks you for that thing? What are you afraid following Jesus might cost you?Well, I’ve got some good news and some bad news. The good news is, you don’t have to wonder. Jesus tells us right up front what he wants from us. He’s very clear about the cost of following him. There’s nothing hidden here. No fine print. That’s the good news.The bad news is (depending on your perspective), he wants it all. Everything. He wants your family, reputation, that relationship, finances, and success. He wants your health, your work, your sex life, and your lifestyle.The good news is, you don’t have to guess. The hard news is, he wants your very life. But. You will never get a better offer than his. A common cliche today is “I’ll believe it when I see it,” but when we come with the posture of faith we say, “I believe it, so I see it.” This is because the Truth is a person to trust, not an argument to defend. But the question remains: what kind of king should we expect in Jesus? Join us as we explore the unchanging character of our promised King in Psalm 72 and so bolster our confidence in who it is that is coming for us. Faced with our worst moments or simply those entrenched, day-to-day bad habits and self-destructive patterns, don’t we all wonder that sometimes: Am I unredeemable?  What we find in Psalm 103 are the words of a man who also struggled deeply with that question. Someone who stole another man's wife, who used his power and position to take advantage of a woman, got her pregnant, and then had her husband killed to cover it up.  And yet, this man, the ancient Israel King David, comes to the conclusion that not even he is unredeemable.
