  • Talk So Real with Matt Sonzala: Kevin Curtin - Season 3 Episode 03

    05/04/2023 Duração: 01h24min

This is the biggest interview to hit the internet since that one interview last week had everyone going nuts. My guest this week is Kevin Curtin, and since you asked, we talk in depth about Ye's appearance on Infowars and what all this means to a couple of punks out here in Austin, Texas. Kevin has some incredible stories of how he got to Austin and landed a job with the Austin Chronicle. You may have heard some of it before, but you definitely don't know the whole story. It cray. We also discuss being a lab rat for money (that was/is a big thing in this town), 6th Street VS the rest of Austin, life on the road and how travel opens your eyes and minds to so many different things, the creative process, and then we talk a lot of dad talk. It really goes down. This will be one for the record books. As always thank you for listening and tell a friend to tell a friend to tune into Talk So Real with Matt Sonzala on your favorite platform! @dirt_curtin

  • Talk So Real with Matt Sonzala: Keith Corona - Season 3 Episode 02

    05/04/2023 Duração: 01h05min

Keith Corona is a South Austin hip hop legend. A leader in all that he does, Keith has been on the cutting edge of the visuals game for as long as I can remember. You have got to check out his YouTube page where you will find all sorts of dope music videos, many of which were filmed in Mexico where he resides for part of every year. He is back in Austin for the moment so I got to sit down with him and talk all sorts of stuff. Namely my wish to live in Mexico as well and how he made his way down there, and why he comes back every year. I'm literally jealous of this mans life. (though I would probably just chill down there full time if I could, and closer to some water. Listen and you will know what I'm talm bout.) In this episode we learn how he got to South Austin and how South Austin is an entity in and of itself. I school him a bit on some late 80's/early 90's rappers from South Austin, who are the main dudes who got me to start coming to Austin back in those days from Houston. (#RIPCROPDIGGIE) And he remi

  • Matt Sonzala's Holidaze Mess 2022

    22/12/2022 Duração: 01h49min

You may or may not be ready for this one. The last Amapiano Christmas mix was kind of nice right? I got lots of nice feedback on that one and it felt good. I like to make people feel good, it's important to me. Especially at this time of year which can be wonderful but also stressful and for some, straight full of pain. Well this one isn't going to do you any favors I'll tell you that right now, but it does jam, it is fun and it's quite representative of the world in which we live in right now as all of North America freezes over and becomes the Nu Antarctica. Anyway, wrap yourself in some blankets, get your best headphones on and vibe out to the realness that is, Matt Sonzala's Holidaze Mess 2022. Bring on 2023! It's gotta be better than 2020 right???? See the full tracklist on Pushermania.com ideally AFTER you listen. I want this all to be big surprises for you. And yours.

Welcome back to the show that recognizes no genres or boundaries. Stamp your passport to this, get the one with the extra pages. The music on this one is good but I talk to much because I was way too throwed after the big Austin FC/Astros winning weekend. That's my excuse anyway. Holler at me in the comments and make me record another show this week I have way more music for you in the virtual crates. Love, matt

  • Talk So Real with Matt Sonzala: Jeff Liles - Season 2 Episode 19

    13/10/2022 Duração: 59min

Maaaan hold up! This week I got to sit down with a man who has been a friend and a mentor to me for like 30 years, Jeff Liles. This man has stories and I think just about anyone would enjoy listening to this one. I first met Jeff when he was a member of the group Decadent Dub Team, an experimental, electronic, hip-hop group from Dallas. The man has literally done it all and has always looked out for me in my journey through the music world. I was like 19 years old maybe 20 when we met and soon after noticed that he was thanked on the back of the NWA and the Posse record. I was floored for real. Like how the hell did that happen? Dude from Dallas thanked on the back of one of my favorite records of all time??? Well listen and find out just how that happened. The stories on this one are amazing. His musical knowledge and experience is unmatched, Jeff is a truly unique individual who has always stayed true to himself and his mission and the music. We got to talk at the Kessler Theater (where I also did Episode

  • Talk So Real with Matt Sonzala: Deuce - Season 2 Episode 18

    13/10/2022 Duração: 01h03min

Man this is a real good one right here, I finally got to sit down with my man Deuce and talk some shop. I first met Deuce when he was an on air personality on Austin's Hot 93 in the early to mid 2000's. Hot 93 was a special place, and maybe one of the last commercial urban radio stations to keep it real witht heir community. Many of the cities most important players in the hip hop world worked there (find out who when you listen) and they kept the doors fairly open to Texas talent and more. Since those days Deuce has been active in the community in many ways and has always been an inspiration to many people really trying to do things in the music and entertainment industries and beyond. He is the author of several popular books and is currently working on a book about the music industry and he even announces his big work that he has in the works right here on this podcast. We also talk about the postponement of the Austin Urban Culture Festival, to it's rightful spot in the spring during Texas Relays and oh

  • Talk So Real with Matt Sonzala: Kiko Villamizar - Season 2 Episode 17

    13/10/2022 Duração: 01h18min

Finally got to sit down with my man Kiko Villamizar. Kiko is a multi-instrumentalist - musicologist - vocalist - comedian - intellectual bad ass dude who was born in Miami to a musical family who took him to Colombia as a youth and raised him on a coffee farm where he immersed himself in the sounds and tradition of his families native land. On today's podcast he talks about that journey and where he is now. We also discuss rap music, in depth. This is a big one. As always thank you for tuning in and tell a friend to tell a friend about Talk So Real with Matt Sonzala.

  • Talk So Real with Matt Sonzala: MOJOE - Season 2 Episode 16

    13/10/2022 Duração: 01h05min

Maaaaan this is a big one for me as I have been a fan of MOJOE for many years, and when we sat down to do this they informed me that I had never interviewed them before. Which is something I can't even fathom given the amount of times I have seen them live and how much I have listened to them and such. But I guess that is the case and this edition of Talk So Real is my first real talk with two of my favorites. MOJOE was a walking revolution from San Antonio back in the day. A live band hip hop experience that had it all and could not be questioned. The title of their Classic.Ghetto.Soul album summed it all up, and after a bit of a hiatus (in which rapper Easy Lee started a group called Third Root with MexStep and DJ Chicken George) they are back with a new album about to drop called Ancient Future Soul, which also sums things up. The guys played the record for me and a few other good folks and then we sat down to do the interview in the lovely upstairs portion of Simona's Coffee Bar in the Colton House Hotel

  • Talk So Real with Matt Sonzala: Noah Tennefrancia - Season 2 Episode 15

    13/10/2022 Duração: 58min

Continuing on with the podcast where I go and have some real talk with my friends, this week I sat down with Noah Tennefrancia to talk about a whole lot of thangs! If you are out and about in Austin's hip hop and electronic and more scenes you probably know Noah as he is always in the place. He is historically one of the biggest supporters of Austin music and music in general that I know and that's super real. We talk about his transition into a wheelchair and living with Miyoshi myopathy for the past 15 years, while still getting out and doing more than all of us put together. He tells us about his dealings with the Texas (in)justice system. We big up a lot of the folks who impacted us and the scene over the years and how music is a healing force. Lots of memories are brought forth on this one and I'm super happy that I got a chance to chop it up with my man Noah. I hope you enjoy listening and as always tell a friend to tell a friend to check out Talk So Real with Matt Sonzala on all the platforms!

  • All Music is World Music #17 with Matt Sonzala

    16/08/2022 Duração: 02h03min

This might be my best All Music is World Music in a while. Maybe one that you, yes you can listen to all the way through. Like no skips as they say. I know sometimes I mess you up with the realness, it's too much, sometimes it's too noisy, maybe to vibey, I don't know. I know it's got to be hard for many of you though and well this time I tried to not trip out TOO hard. There may be some moment but I think you can handle this one. Please to give my little thang right here a listen and tell a friend to tell a friend to listen to All Music is World Music with Matt Sonzala. Also, TALK SO REAL. Stay with me please.

Feel free to hit that play button and maybe let me know where you are listening.

  • All Music is World Music #14 with Matt Sonzala

    18/07/2022 Duração: 02h11min

I've done talked enough! Talk So Real is the movement but I had to sit down last night and concoct a new All Music is World Music as it hath been too long. I needed this. I needed to sit and really listen to some new music and give it to you, friend. I think this one jams pretty hard, not sure how you will feel about it but I will tell you I'm not smacking anyone down with this one. No super surprises, no screaming metal, just as the kids say, vibes. This one is a whole ass vibe and I do hope you enjoy it.

  • Talk So Real with Matt Sonzala: DJ Jester the Filipino Fist - Season 2 Episode 14

    01/07/2022 Duração: 01h05min

Oh man this is big, secure your internet as the whole world wide web gonna feel this one. On this kick off to America Day weekend we are joined in the studio by the one and only DJ Jester the Filipino Fist. His latest mixtape/CD - Made in USA (with DJ Marz on one side, Jester on the other) is out now in them streets and it's the first mixtape in a while that will make you THINK. So many levels to this one, it's both a deft cultural critique AND a jammin ass mix that goes in directions you would never expect. I've been obsessing over dissecting the whole thing for a week now. But it's not just all about the new tape. Jester and I go way back and he is one of my favorite people in the world. On this episode we talk about his early days with Prince Klassen in San Antonio running a scratch school and speaking of San Antonio there is a whole section on Scuba Steve. We also talk about how hip hop in Texas is not and never was limited to what you hear about from Houston, there's loads of layers to this and we try

  • Talk So Real with Matt Sonzala: Edica - Season 2 Episode 13

    01/07/2022 Duração: 55min

So honored to have my great friend Edica in the studio of sorts this week! We go way back to when I first came to Austin and she would help me promote shows and do SXSW things and all this, while she would work with cool artists like Houston's The Nice Guys and Dallas legends SoreLosers. She has always had her ears to the streets and when she made her transition into DJing she immediately began experimenting with sounds and releasing mixes that were jamming and outside the box. Her ability to mix hip hop and dance musics with more ethereal sounds has always been her signature and I think was a natural thing for her. Hailing from Corpus Christi, Edica made the move to Brooklyn some years ago and really dove into the scene and became a resident DJ of Brooklyn Dub Club and Hi-Fi Social Club, and started her own dope online radio show series Dub & Effection which goes in a million different directions while keeping the dub steady as she goes. She is a top DJ who is a part of the Dub-Stuy movement but thankfully

  • Talk So Real with Matt Sonzala: Richard Henry - Season 2 Episode 12

    01/07/2022 Duração: 01h07min

What the what? Heads are NOT ready for this one. Someone may need to reup the Hollerboard to make sure this one gets maximum penetration into the internets and all the real heads can know the deal. Stand up one time for my special guest Richard Henry. Richard has been a mainstay on the Austin scene for many years and has held many scenes on his back in a real way. Never afraid to take a chance or help a friend, Richard Henry is one of those dudes who will always be there, doing things. From back in them days bringing them club DJ's to the ATX to working within the indie rap community to doing many nights with my brother Mr. Cree (may he rest in peace) everything Richard does is pure and from the heart. We met many years ago when companies like Scion and Red Bull were doing cool shows in Houston and Austin and I would hold down Houston and he would hold down Austin. We talk about all that shit and also about the time we brought NOLA bounce music pioneer Ice Mike to Austin and no one cared and then months or

  • Talk So Real with Matt Sonzala: Grimy Styles - Season 2 Episode 11

    01/07/2022 Duração: 01h05min

Man this week I got to sit down with Martin and Matt of one of my favorite bands, Grimy Styles to discuss a bit of their history and to get hyped up for their new album Late Pioneers of Psych Dub - out later this month. The boys are back and in their truest form. On this episode we discuss the bands history and how guitarist Matt Beebe's work in the studios of Jamaica with the sons of Joe Gibbs on rhythm's that were voiced by artists like Cocoa T, Lutan Fyah, I-Wayne, Capleton, Luciano, Junior Reed and more led to the formation of the band upon his return. I used to go see Grimy Styles play any chance that I got, and as discussed in this episode I considered them a secret weapon of sorts when I would book shows that crossed genres. These guys would blow peoples minds. How four dudes from Central Texas created some of the most interesting and forward thinking dub music of the mid-2000's and then some is beyond comprehension. Have a listen and learn just how it all came together. And get excited for the new
