  • Hooper

    03/05/2022 Duração: 01h21min

With this latest episode, dem good ole boys at VHS Rewind are proud to start their Spring 2022 Burt-a-thon, dedicated to the films of (wait for it) the legend, Burt Reynolds! Burt-a-thon begins with one of Burt's very best, 1978's HOOPER. Boasting a superb Burt 'stache, an OK hairpiece and the Flying Nun at her sexiest, plus more stunts than an entire season of THE FALL GUY, a supporting cast that includes Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane and one of the catchiest theme songs in all of Burt's films, join VHS Rewind as they review one Burt's most infectiously entertaining flicks. To paraphrase that theme song: There aint nothin like the life of a movie review postcaster.

  • The 4th Annual Halloween Mixtape

    26/10/2021

It's that time once again: the annual all-music Halloween episode! Naturally, we prefer that listeners jump right in but maybe we can give you some SNEAK PREVIEWS to scare up your interest: this Halloween episode will be a little different as we spend time AT THE MOVIES. This episode will focus on songs (yes, with vocals) from horror flicks from the 1980s (maybe one from the 1990s). There are some obvious choices, of course: Freddy, Jason & Michael are represented but we have other perhaps more obscure horror flicks covered as well (if anything, maybe the songs themselves are less known than the movie they appear in). From main title songs, to end title songs, to songs that are genuinely creepy, to songs that are, like, what-the-hell-is-that-song-doing-in-a-horror-movie (looking at you, HALLOWEEN: CURSE OF MICHAEL MYERS), from disco songs  to country songs to songs with an extended kazoo solo(!), these songs will have you howling at the moon this Halloween (or any other time of the year). So please take

  • Halloween III (1982)

    12/10/2021

Mark and Chris Hasler jump feet first into this 1982 classic, Halloween III!  The Silver Shamrock song is so addictive and this movie, although very strange, is just a ton of fun!  We can't recommend it enough!

  • Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948)

    21/09/2021

HEY ABBOTT! Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein from 1948! This is the oldest film that VHS Rewind! has reviewed and is certainly a classic favorite! We hope you enjoy our second entry into our Halloween until Thanksgiving A-thon!

  • Friday the 13th VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989)

    30/08/2021

The Return of Chris Hasler! Friday the 13th VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan from 1989 was not my first choice but I had such a great time watching this strange and entertaining film.  Thank you to Chris Hasler for suggesting it.  We discuss everything one might expect and we just had an incredibly fun time doing it! We hope you enjoy this first entry into our Halloween until Thanksgiving A-thon!

  • Ghost Fever (1986)

    16/03/2021

This is a very very strange film.  Ghost Fever was originally released on March 27,1987 but since IMDB states the film is from 1986 that's what I'll rolling with! Ghost Fever is a low budget film mostly financed by Sherman Hemsley and nearly bankrupted him!  Although I am unsure who the target audience was, I think it's worth watching just to see how crazy a mid 80's film can be. Geno Cuddy returns to the mic to help be dissect this strange classic! "Two policeman are sent on a routine assignment to serve an eviction notice. It becomes anything but run-of-the-mill when they become involved in the ghostly happenings."

  • Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984)

    22/12/2020

VHS Rewind! wants to leave one more lump of coal under your tree this holiday season…to celebrate Christmas in 2020, VHS Rewind is taking a look at a true holiday classic SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT (1984). Nothing says “Christmas 2020” more than a movie filled with gratuitous nudity, the torture of children by sadistic Catholic nuns, lots of shag carpeting and wood paneling, mommy being raped by Santa in front of the kids, no less than two Santas being shot dead in front of orphaned children…and toys, lots of great toys in the background of certain scenes. VHS Rewind! hopes that you will sit around the Christmas tree, with egg nog in one hand and an axe in the other and listen to this very special holiday treat. Merry Xmas, and God Bless us, everyone.

  • The Annual Chris Hasler 2020 Christmas Mixtape

    12/12/2020

“…with a heart full of wishes, tied up with ribbons of love, this gift that I give may seem small, but I'd like to wrap up a dream for you all..." Ho! Ho! With this episode, VHS Rewind! is gifting listeners with some Christmas cheer and laughter (even if, as we are reminded during this episode, Elvis Wont Be Here for Christmas) ...and after the year that we have all gone through, who doesn't want some Christmas cheer and laughter?  (even if Elvis Wont Be Here for Christmas) Let DJ Christopher be your Santa Claus as he presents a veritable Yule Log (although, at only approx. 90 minutes, perhaps just a Yule Ember? But it burns no less brightly) chock full of Christmas music, Christmas editorials, Christmas comedy, Christmas tears, letters to Santa, and very special holiday wishes to you from a cavalcade of guest stars (we are not telling you who - you have to un

  • Review of Deadly Friend starring Matthew Labyorteaux (1986)

    31/08/2020 Duração: 01h56min

Mark and Chris get together to review this extremely underrated film from 1986. Matthew Labyorteaux who is best know from Little House on the Prairie and the 80's hacker action show, Whiz Kids. Matthew plays Paul Conway who  has a best friend who is a robot....yeah. Having a robot buddy may seem cute but after his friend is killed by her abusive father, Albert...I mean Paul attempts to save her by implanting robotic microchips into her brain.....yeah. Who else is in the nearly forgotten film? How about Anne Ramsey who plays the shotgun wielding neighbor and is easily the same character she portrayed in Throw Mama From the Train. We also have a very young Kristy Swanson who looks lovely until...she's ya know....dead. I hope you guys enjoy this and for my Walnut GroveCast listeners I even added a tiny bit of fun at the very end.

  • VHS Rewind! – Whiz Kids (1983)

    07/07/2020

I don't think it will come to many as much of a surprise for my fondness for the tv show, Whiz Kids which originally aired for a very brief 8 months from October 5, 1983 to June 2, 1984. In those 8 months, 18 episodes aired and I loved the show, I loved it so much that even recorded many of the episodes on a now lost BetaMax collection of tapes. When Whiz Kids first aired I was 10, was really into the BASIC programming language, creating my own games, learning about BBS systems using my 300 baud modem for my Commodore 64. I quickly outgrew the Commodore and received an IBM PC which I would use for many years. I owned (and still do) many computers, Apple II, Apple IIC, Apple IIGS, TRS-80, Commodore 128, Atari 400 and 800, etc etc - right now I am writing this on a Windows 10 machine powered by an AMD Ryzen 7 processor with 32gb of RAM, Navi RX 5000 video card, liquid cooling and many other little amazing things that allow me to edit all of my podcasts, video and anything else needed.  Why am I going off on th

  • VHS Rewind! – Cuckoo Star Wars Music Special

    26/06/2020

In this very special episode, VHS Rewind! brings to you a very special movie presentation from an alternate galaxy far, far away. One of the most fascinating by-products of the phenomenal success of STAR WARS was the proliferation of music knock-offs based on, or inspired by, the film, the film’s music, its characters, or even just the space setting. Naturally, Disco tracks were most prominent (it was 1977, after all), but a little digging uncovers other genres that wanted to cash in on that STAR WARS ka-ching (funk, R&B, country!) and a few genres that we at VHS Rewind cannot categorize). So we have created this alternate presentation of the STAR WARS story for your listening pleasure: we have the narrative of the plot (courtesy of a vintage read-along book – like BEATLEMANIA, an incredible simulation of your favorite characters) and cherry-picked a soundtrack comprised of these music knock-off tracks. Prepare yourself for a hilarious, 70mm, Dolby stereo movie going experience.

  • VHS Rewind! – An Interview with retro author, Allison Preston

    18/06/2020

I have followed Allison Preston's work for quite some time and originally came across her talent while listening to the podcast, The Retroist. Allison puts out work so often and puts so much thoughtful commentary and research into each article that I truly cannot recommend it more!  We discuss our love of retro things, the now defunct X-Entertainment, Cricut and so much more in this discussion. Allison, Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with me and I look forward to what amazing things you will be working on next! You can follow Allison Preston's work here https://allisonveneziowrites.com https://popcultureretrorama.com or check out her amazing vinyl work! https://www.facebook.com/AllisonsCreativeVinyls/

  • VHS Rewind! – 1980s Soundtrack Tunes

    09/05/2020

"VHS Rewind hopes that everyone is doing well and staying healthy during these crazy times. We are presenting another all-music show, this time focusing on 1980s soundtrack songs. Here are some of the ground rules: the song must have appeared (i.e. been heard) in a 1980s movie and/or its must have appeared on a soundtrack album for that movie (sometimes it was one or the other). We didn’t take the easy way out (no BEVERLY HILLS COP tunes; no FLASHDANCE tunes, no FAME, no “Power of Love” from BACK TO THE FUTURE). We went for deep, deep, deep cuts on the choice of movies and the songs to feature. For those who grew up in the 1980s, we are certain this episode will being back memories and make you smile (and maybe want to watch some of the featured movies again since you may have forgotten them); if you did not grow up in the 1980s, we are certain this episode will make you wish you did live through the 1980s and make you smile (and maybe want to watch some of the featured movies again since you may not have

  • VHS Rewind! – Louis CK’s I Love You, Daddy (2017)

    04/03/2020

Following on the heels of last episode’s review of Woody Allen’s A RAINY DAY IN NEW YORK through the prism of our current MeToo culture, VHS Rewind heads into the center of an even more dangerous storm as our new episode focuses its attention on auteur writer-director-star Louis (serial-masturbator-in-front-of-trapped-women) CK’s, I LOVE YOU DADDY. Where the charges against Woody Allen were tried in a court of law and Woody was cleared, and may be a victim of the Me Too vigilantes, auteur Louis CK has confessed to his serial-masturbation-in-front-of-trapped-women actions – how can we put that aside when watching this directorial effort? Louis CK seems to be aping the Woody Allen look and style (shooting in black-and-white) but is auteur Louis another Woody (writing/directing-wise)? Is auteur Louis CK’s film full of neurotic characters or deeply disturbed characters, starting with Louis CK’s main character (who resembles, well, Louis CK) and including John Malkovich’s Woody-esque film director who may have mol

  • VHS Rewind! – Woody Allen’s A RAINY DAY IN NEW YORK (2019)

    31/01/2020

VHS Rewind dips its toe into some potentially controversial waters by beginning a short series of episodes reviewing films that have fallen victim to the vigilantes known as the MeToo movement. First up is MeToo whipping boy Woody Allen’s A RAINY DAY IN NEW YORK…Sexual abuse claims continue to dog Woody despite the claims having been investigated and "no credible evidence" having been found to support these allegation. Can A RAINY DAY IN NEW YORK be viewed on its own merits? Or does the director’s alleged peccadilloes rain down on any entertainment value the film has? Should art in any form be banned because of the artist’s possibly tawdry personal life? Has the MeToo movement, which can ruin an individual’s life on mere hearsay, gone too far? Oh yeah, this is going to be a very stormy conversation so bring your umbrellas and give us a listen.
