If you’ve ever felt like the fashion industry doesn’t understand you, or that something must be wrong with you because you can’t find clothes to fit your physique, you are not alone. If you’ve ever cried in the dressing room (shoutout) or sworn off a brand because of a “how can anyone fit into something like this?” moment, it’s not you. It’s them. Here’s the thing: the average American woman wears a size 16 and about two-thirds of these women fall into the plus-size market. Think about it. If that’s the average, why do most fashion companies use a size 6 fit model to design and manufacture their clothes? If that’s the average, why is this still considered the plus-size market? Do you know the greatest female athlete of all time is? Sure, the Super Bowl was last night which is cool and all, but that makes paying homage to the greats that much more important. Did you know that only as recently as 1900 women were allowed to participate in the Olympics? Compare that to the centuries of men allowed to participate in this tradition, and you get the idea. Oh, and women's gymnastics debuted at the 1928 Olympics. Ridiculous.   So the muse we’re investigating today is all of the above: she’s a rebel, a superstar, an accomplished athlete. She totally defied the status quo at a time when women were expected to maintain a singular role in their lifetimes, and she made such an impact in the world of sports that she’s revered to this day, her memory solidified in publications and history books indefinitely.

Today we’re talking about confidence. With some Hallmark-inspired conspiracy theories sprinkled in, no less. February is a month that preys on bringing us down. During January, we start a new year by pursuing outlandish resolutions. We literally pick out something about ourselves that we believe needs improving, dedicate our time and efforts and sanity into fixing these perceived weaknesses, and, as statistics show, we fail by the time February comes around. Today we’re talking about defiance. Defiance in the face of discrimination, in the face of abuse. Defiance in the face of the ongoing war of good versus evil. Defiance in the face of those who aim to suppress our truths and our livelihoods. And today we’re going to talk about the life of a woman who encompasses all of the above: she has boldly lived her truth, defied societal expectations, and literally fought against her political oppressor to overcome his blatant prejudices in the most badass and publicly way possible.
