This year we had the opportunity to be part of the CAMINOS Festival - every night before the evening’s shows, we hosted an interview in front of a live audience. In this live episode, Monica and Camila shared a merienda with some of the members of Grupo Teatro Libre. Founded in 2008, Grupo Teatro Libre creates collective community theatre in Spanish, representing original creations and Latin American playwrights in their original language, while always promoting solidarity and respect for human rights. We talked about how the group started and how has being part of it has shaped their lives as well of where do they see it going in the next 10 years. Grab a snack and let’s get started! Madre is a theatrical memoir that follows Julia de Maria Auxiliadora, an aging woman in Colombia who is fighting to maintain a sense of self as she succumbs to Alzheimer’s. As Julia’s lifetime of memories unravels, her adopted daughter Angela returns from Toronto to care for her, and to make one last desperate attempt to resolve their conflicted relationship while Julia still recognizes her. About the play: Leo is a one-act play told from the perspective of a twenty-year-old pleasure centered man who has become a desaparecido (disappeared) in the Chilean military coup d’etat of 1973. Leo takes us on a journey through childhood, first friends, first loves and an abruptly ended adolescence. This is third and final part of our presentation of Leo, by Rosa Labordé. The story so far: Leo, Rodrigo and Isolda are becoming an adolescent love triangle. Isolda and Leo are seen flirting intimately by Rodrigo, at the same time that an attraction between Leo and Rodrigo is on the rise.
