The Congregational response to the message for Hebrews 5:11-16:12.

Human life is a journey. And it's a journey guided by the hand of God. That reality is the case for every person who has ever lived. It's true for the Christian, and it's true for the non-Christian. At many points along this journey we have points of decision. Decisions that determine whether we will continue to follow the path God has for us or not. To not continue is apostasy. This danger is the focus of our passage and the message by Justin Marbury in Hebrews 5:11-6:12.

The writer of Hebrews continues to present Jesus as the superior version of all that Israel had known before. This time, he turns his attention to the high priestly family and the person of Aaron, the original high priest. The revelation from God, here, is that we don't have to enter the Holy of Holies with fear and trepidation any more. Because Jesus, the Great High Priest, is permanently in the Holy of Holies, we can enter with confidence and find grace to help in time of need.

The writer of Hebrews warns the Jewish members of his audience of the dangers of turning back from following God and rejecting Jesus as Messiah. His warning comes in the form of a reminder that their ancestors, ancient Israel, once turned back themselves from following God. And as a result, they never were able to enter the promised land. His point? The rest that God offers through Jesus is a greater rest than what Israel rejected in the time of the Exodus. But just like they rejected it then, so can it be rejected today.

In part 2 of our overview of Hebrews the key themes of the letter are briefly introduced through the lens of 2 Timothy 3:16-17, "All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work." The question is answered, "How will Hebrews teach, reprove, correct, and train us in righteousness?" This brief overview is followed by the congregational reading of Hebrews chapters 8 through 13.
