  • Pat Thurston: Bay Area filmmakers discuss new movie "Town Destroyer"

    30/09/2022 Duração: 20min

Director: Alan Snitow, Deborah Kaufman Is art’s role to provoke or placate? What happens when it no longer reflects current societal views? These questions and many more were the subject of hot debate when Victor Arnautoff’s thirteen-panel mural “The Life of Washington” became an object of local controversy, then a media firestorm. On display since San Francisco’s George Washington High School opened in 1936, it offers a view of the Founding Father both celebratory and critical, referencing his involvements in slavery and Native American genocide. (The Iroquois dubbed him “Town Destroyer.”) But some present-day students, parents, and observers found those depictions racially offensive, calling for the work to be removed or destroyed. Would doing so be a “redaction of history,” “identity politics gone off the rails”—or a justified blow to a lingering American “colonized mentality” as well as ongoing “traumatization” of young minds? Longtime Bay Area documentarians Alan Snitow and Deborah Kaufman interview his

  • Pat Thurston: SF Supervisor Matt Dorsey on critical issues impacting San Francisco

    30/09/2022 Duração: 34min

San Francisco lawmakers and health leaders say they’re open to “safe supply,” a controversial drug policy that provides regulated access to narcotics.  The first public indication came at a Board of Supervisors hearing on Thursday, when Department of Public Health behavioral health director Hillary Kunins said that the city is looking to broaden access to medically assisted treatment for people suffering from drug dependency. Kunins pointed to Canada and Switzerland, which offer prescription opioids—including heroin and fentanyl—in an effort to stabilize the drug supply and destigmatize drug use. The health department is looking to the federal government to change laws around the practice, said Kunins.   “In other countries like Canada, like Switzerland, there’s a wider range of medications that are actually from the opioid class that have been found to reduce a person’s use of illicit opioids and to reduce the risk of overdose,” Kunins said on Thursday.  The practice is illegal federally in the U.S. But in s

  • John Rothmann: Judge lets Trump lawyers off the hook

    30/09/2022 Duração: 34min

Judge Aileen M. Cannon told Donald Trump’s lawyers Thursday that they did not need to comply with an order from special master Raymond J. Dearie and state in a court filing whether they believe FBI agents lied about documents seized from the former president’s Florida residence. Thursday’s ruling was the first clash between Cannon, a Trump appointee who has generally shown the former president deference in litigation over the Mar-a-Lago investigation, and Dearie, a federal judge she appointed as an outside expert in the case, who appears to be far more skeptical of Trump. After Trump’s lawyers requested a special master, Cannon chose Daerie to review approximately 11,000 documents seized Aug. 8 from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club and residence and determine whether any should be shielded from investigators because of attorney-client or executive privilege. An appeals court separately overruled Cannon’s decision that about 100 additional documents that the government says are classified — some of them top-secret — sh
