Jared looks at the final days on the current Congress, as they attempt to complete legislation, including funding the government for the next year,before the holiday break and the change of party leadership in the House makes everything more difficult. The congressional term ends on Dec. 16th.

This morning (11am/ET), top leadership from the House and Senate will present the law enforcement officers who defended the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021 with Congressional Gold Medal. This medal is Congress’s highest honor. There will be medals places throughout the Capitol complex including U.S. Capitol Police headquarters and the Metropolitan Police Department. This comes as the congressional committee investigating the brutal attack has a small window to release their findings. We breakdown what we can from today’s ceremony and how these officers will be honor for their service.

Sheriff Waters joins JMN to discuss a weekend shooting that left a 13-year-old boy dead on Jacksonville's northside.

This weekend starts what the Department of Veterans Affairs is calling the “PACT Act week of action.” It stems from legislation the President signed in August, which gives benefits to service members who are suffering after exposure to toxic burn pits. There are an estimated 3.5 million people impacted. VAs across the country will hold events to educate vets about the claims process. We sit down with VA officials to find out what they’re doing to make sure those who served get the benefits they earned.

Laura reports on the latest developments between congress and the railroad unions. A legislative measure to prevent a rail strike has been approved by the House, including a significant wage increase and, in a separate vote, increased paid sick leave time for rail employees. Not all rail unions are satisfied, though, and certain Republican critics believe President Biden should have resolved this without congressional involvement. The bill still needs approval in the Senate. Experts fear a rail strike would have immediate and severe impact on food and materials delivery, in addition to its retail holiday consequences.

JU President Cost joins JMN to discuss bringing the first 4-year medical school to Jacksonville, in partnership with the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. JU has applied for medical accreditation, and expects to welcome their first class in 2026.

Jared looks at the House vote to force a legislated agreement against train unions, in an effort to prevent a rail system strike. The railroad unions are still not happy with the proposed legislation, and anything the House advances would still have to go through the Senate too. Experts suggest a rail strike would be economically devastating.
