I was getting a SSMTP authentication failure 535 5.7.8 error on an Ubuntu Linux web server when trying to send password reset emails from a site that was hosted on it. This isn't some virus trying to steal information, it's not distributing pornography, it is hijacking web traffic. So, I struggled a little bit, but I figured out what is happening and how to fix it!
