  • Care

    17/03/2018

ENCOUNTERS WITH JESUS 'People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care!' is the famous quote by Theodore Roosevelt.I reckon he is right. Taking an interest in others, developing a rapport with them, hearing their stories, responding wisely and compassionately to their needs can be life changing for them.Such care has opened conversations about life and meaning.Never have we seen this more clearly than in the life of Jesus. His care for people was life changing and every person he cared for and blessed became a living, breathing advertisement of what an encounter with a caring person can do.Here we are talking about the expression of care that doesn’t require anything in return. It is love in action. Those for whom Jesus changed their games often became channels of that grace and care to others. How about a practical assignment for the week? What about letting God know at the start of each day this week that you are available to extend his care and grace to others through the day and

  • Equality

    10/03/2018

ENCOUNTERS WITH JESUS “Equality” or something else? Equality is a rather rubbery word, much bandied about in recent years. It may surprise you to learn that the New Testament rarely uses the term. Andrew Wilson writes — “A man rang me out of the blue the other day to ask if the New Testament teaches anything on ‘Equality’. “Not really,” I replied.“The New Testament mentions equality once or twice, but when it comes to social relationships, it is far more interested in concepts like oneness, commonness, partnership, union, and joint inheritance. If you could make all those passages mean equality, you flatten their meanings. And, in any case, it has become a blunderbuss word that means everything and nothing.”

  • Women and Children

    03/03/2018

ENCOUNTERS WITH JESUS The Radical Jesus It is difficult for us today, separated from the times of Jesus by 2000 years, to even partly grasp the radical nature to not only what he said but what he did. Author Philip Yancey comments, “For women and other oppressed people, Jeus turned upside down the accepted wisdom of is day.According to biblical scholar Walter Wink, Jesus violated the values of his time in every single encounter with women recorded in the four Gospels.” And what about children who had no rights and were in the “seen and not heard” category? Two of the few recorded contacts of Jesus with children result in amazing and revolutionary statements. When the disciples asked Jesus – “Who is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” – his answer was very unexpected. He called a child to him and said to his disciples, “Unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven” (Matthew 18:1-3). The other recorded contact is in Mark 10:13-16 – look it up when you get ho

  • Jesus

    24/02/2018

ENCOUNTERS WITH JESUS Crucial questions need thoughtful responses. On of themost crucial questions ever asked was by Jesus to his disciples when he said, "Who do you say that I am?" Whether we have followed Jesus all our lives or whether we know very little about him, ouor answer to the question, 'Who do you say I am?' will have a huge impact on both our present and our future and can help us deal with our past. Many people have declared that, for them, Jesus has been a game changer.Today in our world, more than 2 billion people claim that they are followers of Jesus. For a person who never wrote a book, who never travelled much, who never had many devotees, who never owned property, Jesus has had an amazing impact! Have you got to know him?We would love to introduce you to him.

  • Membership

    17/02/2018

ALL IN Church Membership with Syndal Baptist Church. These days people choose to be members of all sorts of things – sports clubs, retail chains, and all sorts of arts and charity organisations. Yet the idea of becoming a member of a church can seem somewhat…awkwardly official. Some might wonder whether there is a point to church membership when you can be thoroughly involved in church life without it. What does membership at Syndal Baptist even involve? In this podcast Bill Brown tackles these very important questions. It was part of a series preached early in 2018 as we asked what it might mean for us to be ‘All In’ as a faith community this year. This message functioned as a ‘Membership Orientation’. If you would like to apply for Church Membership return to https://www.sb.org.au/baptism-church-membership and click the link Church Membership.

  • Baptism

    10/02/2018

ALL IN When Jesus walked the earth he quite literally invited his followers to go ‘all in’ for him by being baptised as a sign and symbol of their faith. It’s a step of faith people still take today. But does everybody have to do it? Is it just an ‘additional extra’ to faith? In this podcast Chris Danes tackles these very important questions. The message was part of a series preached early in 2018 as we asked what it might mean for us to be ‘All In’ as a faith community. This message functioned as a ‘Baptism Class’ and explores why baptism is central to the life of a Baptist Church. If after listening to it you would like to be baptised then return to https://www.sb.org.au/baptism-church-membership and click the link to Baptism Registration.

  • Living Our Values

    03/02/2018

ALL IN Overview All In As we enter 2018, many of us will be looking at the year ahead and figuring out where we will choose to invest our time, energy and resources. We might ask, ‘Where does church fit?’, ‘Is it worth my time and energy?’, or even ‘Why Syndal?’ As we ponder these questions, we want to pose another great question – ‘What could we achieve together if we went ‘all in’ as Jesus’ church this year?’ Over these three Sundays, we hope to bring clarity and vision about who we are as a faith community, what our priorities are in 2018, and how we might move forward together as we go ‘all in’.Living Our Values What is the heartbeat of Syndal Baptist? What do we care most about and prioritise most highly? How do these things shape who we are and how will they impact you in 2018? We hope you can join us as we talk about the values we hold most dear as a community, and dream a little about how God might work through a community which is ‘All In’ for Jesus this year!

  • The Darkness

    27/01/2018

THE JOY FILLED LIFE At any given moment, a person’s life can be turned upside down by loss, by pain, by change and any number of other unwelcome circumstances. These events and experiences can leave us feeling like a darkness has blanketed our life. Can joy exist in such times? If so, how? Today, Chris Danes will be confronting this very difficult reality which most of us face at some point. We hope that you can join us today as we seek answers together.Key ScriptureHebrews 12:1-3 and John 16:16-33

  • The Action

    20/01/2018

THE JOY FILLED LIFE Is joy all about knowing Jesus and having a certain attitude? Or are there practices and behaviours which we can adopt to help stimulate joy in ourselves? But then again, does joy itself stimulate certain practices and behaviours? What are the outwards signs of inward joy? While possibly confusing, these questions may be crucial in our pursuit of ‘the joy-filled life’. We hope you can join us as Mandy Stark helps us seek some answers! Key Scripture: 2 Corinthians 8:1-9

  • The Attitude

    13/01/2018

THE JOY FILLED LIFE “If only I could take more holidays”. “If only we had a nicer house.” “If only.” Whether we mean to or not, it’s easy to believe that a more joyous life is just out of our reach because we are lacking in one area or nother. We can feel like our life would be more enjoyable if our circumstances were different. But is this the case? Is it possible to experience more joy in our life without our circumstances changing at all? If so, how? Join us at church today as Mike Riddell tackles these very questions.

  • The Source

    06/01/2018

THE JOY FILLED LIFE In a world of sleek advertising campaigns and lustrous images of ‘the good life’, there are a lot of things promising to bring us joy; we need only pay the right price, or sign the right contract. Yet many of us find that once the contract has been signed and money has been paid, we are little better off than we were before. So where can joy really be found? Where does it come from and what keeps it alive day after day, year after year? Today, Bill Brown will be sharing the answers he’s found to these very questions.

    09/12/2017

ADVENT: CHRISTMAS JOY TO THE WORLD! Have you ever been given a gift at Christmas which you immediately plan to sell on Ebay in January? Something so bad you wonder what the giver was thinking when they gave it to you? If there was ever a person who could have questioned the gift they were given, it was Mary, Mother of Jesus. As she was told of her mysterious pregnancy, she could have looked ahead only to see trouble and pain and responded less than gratefully. Yet she didn’t. Why? What did she see that most of us would have missed? What can we learn from her as we reflect on Jesus’ arrival at the first Christmas? Join us on Sunday as we consider these questions together.

  • It Runs in the Family

    02/12/2017

ADVENT: CHRISTMAS JOY TO THE WORLD! In the age of Instagram and Facebook, we can tend to edit information about ourselves to make things look better than they might in reality. We can hide the skeletons in the closet, the moments of embarrassment and failure and slap up a smiling picture of ourselves. In Jesus’ time, people tended to do the same with their family trees – leave out the people who didn’t bring honour to the family name. Yet when we read the list of people in Jesus’ family tree, even those with messiest stories are included. Why? What does that have to tell us about Jesus? And as we approach Christmas, what might it reveal about Jesus ultimate purpose in our world? We hope you can join us this Sunday as we explore these questions.
