In the early 1800s, a quiet farming family in southwestern Ontario found themselves targeted by one of Canada’s most bizarre hauntings. It started subtly, with unexplained noises and objects moving on their own, but the disturbances quickly escalated into something far more violent, destructive, and unusual. When Deeanna Erickson boarded a bus in Calgary on the night of June 6, 2025, something went wrong. Surveillance footage shows the 31 year old visibly distressed, crying and rocking back and forth, before suddenly stepping off in the Walden area, more than 10 kilometres from her home. In 2025, more 1052 UFO sightings were reported across Canada, an average of one every eight hours. In this episode, we are joined by Canadian UFO researcher Chris Rutkowski to break down the findings of the 2025 Canadian UFO Survey, an annual report that collects and analyzes sightings from civilians, researchers, and government sources to better understand what people are seeing in Canada’s sky. The discussion unpacks the common characteristics such as colour and shape, where reports are coming from, when they are most commonly seen, why Nova Scotia stands out, notable cases, and how things like satellites, drones, and social media are changing what we think of as a UFO. This week on The Canadian Gothic, we’re revisiting a case that continues to unfold in the headlines. Due to travel, we’re taking a short break from new releases, but rather than leave you without an episode, we’re bringing back our coverage of the murder of Paul Schmidt, a shocking and deeply disturbing act of violence that unfolded in downtown Vancouver on March 26, 2023. In broad daylight, outside a busy Starbucks, Paul was attacked and killed following a brief confrontation while standing with his young daughter. The incident, which was partially captured on video and widely shared online, left a lasting impact on the public and raised difficult questions about violence, bystander behavior, and the justice system. At the time of this original episode, many details were still emerging. Now, as the trial of the accused continues to work its way through the courts, this case is once again in the spotlight.
