EP-202 | MACV-SOG Chronicles with John Stryker Meyer
02/10/2019 Duração: 01h37minThe Military Assistance Command Vietnam - Studies and Observations Group, also known as SOG, and the heroics of these men during Vietnam are nothing short of incredible. A secret 8-year war in Vietnam was fought outside of the conventional war by SOG and their indigenous troops in Cambodia, Laos, and North Vietnam from 1964 to 1972. These missions would later be described as suicide missions. John Stryker Meyer entered the Army on 1 December 1966. He completed basic training at Ft. Dix, New Jersey, advanced infantry training at Ft. Gordon, Georgia, jump school at Ft. Benning, Georgia, and graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course in December 1967. After a 12-week training session in Ft. Gordon, on radio teletype, Meyer landed in South Vietnam in April 1968, and arrived at FOB 1 in Phu Bai in May 1968, where he joined Spike Team Idaho. In 2006, an official risk assessment conducted by Air Force Personnel titled “Burn Pit Hazards” at Joint Base Balad, Iraq, was “the worst environmental site I have personally visited” and continued to list items witnessed being burned in high quantities including plastics, Styrofoam and both medical and non-medical wastes while using jet-propellant-8 (JP-8) fuel as an accelerant (Curtis, 2006).
