Brendan Banfield and au pair Juliana Magalhães carry on an affair for months. Banfield begins creating the murder plan after telling Magalhães he wants to get rid of his wife and divorce is not an option. He doesn't want to spend the money, nor does he want to share custody of their 4-year-old daughter. The jury has heard the murder plan Banfield came up with...a home invasion that involves giving Magalhaes a gun and instructing her to call Christine's phone when Joseph Ryan enters the home. Magalhaes is then supposed to call Banfield as he waits at a McDonald's near the home. Peres Magalhaes says Banfield changes his regular routine leading up to the murders so it would not seem out of routine for him to be at the McDonald's at that time of the morning.  Ryan is shot by Magalhães, then Christine is stabbed to death by her husband.  Magalhães confesses to police. Angelynn "Angie" Mock, a former TV news anchor,  has been ruled mentally unfit to stand trial for the murder of her 80-year-old mother. Court records revealed that Mock suffers from schizophrenia. Mock has been ordered to a state psychiatric hospital for treatment. Shortly after 7:40 a.m., Alyssa Castro and her boyfriend are in their car in their south Wichita neighborhood when a neighbor waves them down. As the woman approaches, they see what appears to be blood on the woman's hands. The woman asks to borrow a phone to call 911, then takes off with the phone back into a house. A 911 dispatch reveals a possible stabbing and relays a message to first responders that a woman says that it happened in her home. Dispatch relays information that the person calling says the stabbing was in self-defense. She was trying to save herself from her mother. On Feb. 24, 2023, police were called to the Banfield family home for a stabbing and a shooting around 8 a.m. Brendan Banfield, an IRS special agent, told police he shot a man who had stabbed his wife, Christine Banfield. Police find Christine Banfield, nude and stabbed multiple times, in an upstairs bedroom. Nearby, they find a man named Joseph Ryan shot multiple times. Inside the house at the time of the shooting: Brendan Banfield, along with the family's au pair, then-22-year-old Juliana Peres Magalhaes, and the Banfields' then-4-year-old daughter. A federal judge has dismissed the death penalty-eligible murder and weapons charges against Luigi Mangione, accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The judge ruled they did not constitute crimes of violence. This removes the death penalty. Federal stalking charges remain, with a trial set to potentially begin in October 2026 after jury selection in September. There is also a push for state murder charges. Also happening surrounding Mangione: a Minnesota man is arrested after trying to break the accused killer free. Mark Anderson reportedly presented himself at a New York federal jail claiming to be an FBI agent. He said he had a court order to release Mangione. Anderson also allegedly said he had weapons on him. Elizabeth Short was an American woman found nude, murdered in Los Angeles, California, in 1947.  She became known as the "Black Dahlia." The case was highly publicized due to its gruesome nature, and remains unsolved. The Zodiac killer, pseudonym of an unidentified serial killer, murdered at least five people in the San Francisco Bay Area over the span of about nine months. He claimed in letters to have killed 37 people, but he was never identified.
