In Episode 6, regular co-hosts Rene, Dustin and Timothy talk about analog synths and their role in sound design. Timothy talks about how he uses older synths from the ’80s and Dustin discusses his recent jump into the world of modular synthesis. Next up, we go over the studio moves that both Rene and Dustin have been involved with recently and the lessons they learned through these exhausting changes. We cover gear decisions, network setups, studio design and more.

In Episode 5, special guest Michael Maroussas joins in from London England, along with regular co-hosts Rene Coronado and Timothy Muirhead. Michael is the creator of The Sound Collector’s Club, a crowd sourcing sound effects library. He discusses the club’s history and where the future will take it. Timothy also interviews sound editor Dustin Cawood about the work he has done recently on the documentary Chasing Ice and Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln.

In Episode 4, we welcome special guest Paul Virostek to join regulars Dustin Camillari, Timothy Muirhead and Rene Coronado to talk about mastering Sound Effects and prepping them to be added to your master SFX library. Paul also tells us all about his new eBook: Field Recording: From Research to Wrap.

In Episode 3 – ‘iPads, Reverb & AES’, Tonebenders has its first guest sit in for the show. Shaun Farley joins regular hosts Rene, Dustin and Timothy with his memories of AES 2012 in San Francisco. Shaun is also a contributing editor at Designingsound.org and talks about the recent changes taking place on the site. We also interview composer and sound designer David Burns about how he uses his iPad in his daily audio workflow and Dustin checks in with a review of ValhallaDSP’s ValhallaShimmer reverb plug-in. All this and a spirited discussion on loudness specs.

In Episode 2, titled Getting Out & Recording, the podcast rolls out its first 2 pre-produced feature stories. Up first is “Building Your Own Field Recording Kit”, where co-host Rene Coronado looks at what makes a good kit and what gear is best to splurge on and where it can be smart to be frugal. The next feature, by Timothy Muirhead, covers techniques used in recording animals in the wild, as well as domesticated pets. Both feature stories are followed with Q&A sessions that go into further depth on these topics. Finally, we wrap the show up with highlights of recent news stories that affect the worlds of sound design and audio post production. Topics include the shutdown of operations at Sound One in New York, the new release of Sound Forge for Macintosh, and a few others as well.

Tonebenders premier episode, takes the opportunity to introduce listeners to the show’s hosts. Through in depth discussions each host tells the story of how they ended up working in audio and the mistakes and triumphs the experienced along the way.

In this SoundBytes episode, Timothy sits down for a one-on-one interview with Will Files, sound designer and re-recording mixer – based largely out of Skywalker Ranch. Will is one of the most experienced mixers around with the Dolby Atmos surround format. Will tells us about his career, the positives and negatives of working with ATMOS and lots more.

In this episode, Rene and Timothy sit down with Ann Kroeber, veteran audio post and field recording professional. Ann tells us of her career path and her work on classic films like the Black Stallion, Dune and others. She also shares some of her techniques used to record animal vocals and her unique SFX service at soundmountain.com.

In this SoundBytes episode, Timothy and Rene interview Roth Mobot, a duo that perform and teach workshops on the art of circuit bending. They teach us the history of the craft as well as the basics that anyone would need to start making crazy sounds for themselves.

In Episode 017, Rene and Timothy answer some listener questions and Rene presents some tests he did matching various microphones using Izotope Ozone – the results are surprising. Finally, we talk Plural Eyes for audio pros.

In episode 16 Timothy talks to Gordon Hempton about recording in pristine wilderness, protecting natural silence and his personal bouts with hearing loss. That interview is followed up with a talk with audiologist Marshall Chasin about the best ways to keep our ears in long term health.

In this episode, René takes the Tonebenders spaceship for a solo cruise and talks with Jason Cushing from SoundMorph about making sound FX libraries, evaluating the marketplace, doing the art and the new SoundMorph software release: Wave Warper. -

The guest for this episode is Martin Pinsonnault, the sound designer on the new film, “Dallas Buyer’s Club”. We talk about the film’s unique post production work flow, location recording to capture authentic Texan ambiences, Martin’s career and SFX libraries.

After a summer break, the Tonebenders are back! In episode 13, Rene, Dustin and Timothy answer listener’s questions – including how to best manage the demands of the business while keeping our personal lives afloat. Then, Rene shows us his process for building a huge powerdown sound effect, layer by layer.

In Episode 12, we do our first deep dive into the sound design of a specific film, Martha Marcy May Marlene. To help us go through the film, we welcome the sound designer and re-recording mixer, Coll Anderson.
