Hearing God: Developing a Conversational Relationship with God; Dallas Willard Today we look at chapter 8 of the book which is titled “Recognising the voice of God”. “The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice…. “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” John 10:2–4, 14, 27 NIV11 Voice recognition in nature Animals recognise voices. Takes time. Just like us with God. Partly because God's voice is gentle. It has to be this way, or else he would be shouting at us and that's no way to conduct a relationship! “Meanwhile a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was a learned man, with a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures. He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and he spoke with great fervour and taught about Jesus accurately, though he knew only the baptism of John. He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately.” “When Apollos wanted to go to Achaia, the brothers and sisters encouraged him and wrote to the disciples there to welcome him. When he arrived, he was a great help to those who by grace had believed. For he vigorously refuted his Jewish opponents in public debate, proving from the Scriptures that Jesus was the Messiah.” (Acts 18:24–28 NIV11) - Fervour and vigour are not about volume - Humility to learn more - You don’t have to know everything (!), but you do need to be an active on-going student - “Perhaps it’s not theology we’re missing, but rather theo

So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.’ ” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. The LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.” (1 Samuel 3:8–9; 1 Kings 19:11–12 NIV11) It's not all about the fireworks from heaven Is the experience of Samuel

  • S2 Ep262: Teaching Tips 262 | "How Important is Unity?" | Malcolm Cox

    14/06/2022 Duração: 21min

Introduction: - A never-solved challenge from the first century till now - In our family of churches unity was simple - Now it is much more complex 1. The Significance (of Unity) Jesus - “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:34–35 NIV11) “I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.” (John 17:22–23 NIV11) The world will not know that we are his disciples unless we are unified, unless we love deeply “In the church, we divide easily because we love shallowly.” Francis Chan, ‘Until Unity’. Paul - “I plead with Euodia and I plead with Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord.” (Philippians 4:2 NIV11) Early church - “When they came to Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the c

“Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart. For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. For, “All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures forever.”” (1 Peter 1:22–25 NIV11) QUESTION: What is the difference between love and deep love? “Our church is not the group of people who show up Sunday morning to attend a weekly religious event. The real church is the people who are emotionally connected by their mutual and stated love for Christ and by their commitment to each other because of Christ.”  In this interactive lesson, we explored how we deepen our fellowship in a way modelled after the way Christ loved his disciples (John 13:34-35). What do you think are the most significant issues that help us to love one another deepl

Hearing God: Developing a Conversational Relationship with God; Dallas Willard Today we look at Chapter 4. Our communicating Cosmos How do we know whether the voice we are hearing from God or not? The limits of signs Jesus could not be forced into doing ‘religious stunts’. Even something directly done by God does not necessarily convince, Luke 16:31. ““He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’ ”” (Luke 16:31 NIV11)  ‘If a man (says Jesus) cannot be humane with the Old Testament in his hand and Lazarus on his doorstep, nothing - neither a visitant from the other world nor a revelation of the horrors of hell – will teach him otherwise. Such requests for signs are pure invasions." This comes about largely through knowing his teachings. Four neg

I enjoy finding connections between the Old and New Covenants. Today I want to try one out on you. You can tell me if I am seeing something that is not there, or whether it is legitimate. Fellowship is under pressure     * COVID         * 2 years of our lives have been spent largely not in one another’s company         * Allows for reduced vulnerability         * We are truly viscerally vulnerable when together in a way that is not mirrored online.          * One of the beauties of in-person fellowship is the inability of the fellowshipers to control their fellowship. Someone will interrupt, someone will want to talk to us that we'd rather avoid, a topic will be broached we'd rather not discuss.      * Social Media         * The Separation of Church and Status, Brett McCracken, Princeton Theological Review, Vol XVII, No 2, (2010) pp. 21-34.             * McCracken is pretty scathing about the ability of social media to generate meaningful connections. Hearing from God Two weeks ago we considered the topic of what it means to develop a ‘conversational relationship with God’. How is that going for you? Is it something you cherish, find confusing - or even a little scary?! Below I pen a few more thoughts - based on, “Hearing God” by Dallas Willard. God is not looking for robots Your relationship with God is yours. It is unique. Our relationship with God as it develops is meant to be characterised by a deep and meaningful love. It is more a way of being with him than talking to him and hearing from him as such. In that way it is similar to any mature human relationship that has stood the test of time. A relationship with God most certainly is not about getting the latest information or commands, but instead getting to know God so that you understand his wishes - even if he is not telling you exactly what to do. God is no taskmaster God is not harsh. He takes no joy in judging even the ‘wicked, lazy servant’ of Mat 25:26. What kind of relationship does Go

  • S2 Ep259: Teaching Tips 259 | "Are we using too many pictures?" | Malcolm Cox

    24/05/2022 Duração: 10min

It seems pretty much given these days that when we preach and teach we should use images. There's been a lot of talk over the last few years about visual learners. We know the impact that an arresting image can have.  As a simple illustration, and if you're listening to the podcast you'll have to use your imagination, let me make a statement, followed by an image. You tell me which one has the most significant effect on you. First the statement: "the man was shocked"  Now I will put the image on screen: …….. So, which had more impact on you? What is the relevance here for our preaching and teaching? Well, yesterday as part of my Masters in Theological Studies I was reading this book, “The hidden power of electronic culture" by Shane Hipps. In it he makes the point that since the invention of photography the use of images in communication has come to dominate communication to the downgrading of the significance of written and spoken communication. Is this a good thing, a bad thing, or is it neutral?
