All of us have certain sins we struggle with more than others; sins we think no one else will notice or find out about. Some that we have excused or rationalized for so long that they have become a part of our character. James tells us, "We have not because we ask not" and in our study of 1st John we are reminded that as followers of Christ we can approach God for anything. God desires an intimate relationship with each one of us and prayer is the main avenue to that intimacy. So many times we allow fear and a misunderstanding of God's nature to keep us from asking but it is in the asking that intimacy is developed. Through approaching and asking we learn more about God's will, His love for us and how we fit into his plans. We live in a culture that continues to rename, redefine and rationalize sin to make it more palatable and easier to justify. The names we use to identify ourselves carry history, heritage and meaning. Sometimes we even allow those name to become our identitiy. For those that have an initmate relationship with God; you have a new name. A name that carries a promise, a new identity and will define us, not just in this life but also the next. Does it really matter where you go to church? Does it matter what you believe as long as you are sincere? As Christ followers we were redeemed to have an intimate relationship with God; John calls this "Walking in the Light". In theological terms it is called "sanctification" or the fellowship we have with God as we are led and guided by the Holy Spirit to be made more in his image. Along that journey we all face distractions that hinder our walk, but none greater than the allure of the world. The Christian life is about the journey not the destination and we were created to share that journey in community with others. Since sin has been defeated, we can not only have an intimate relationship with God but with other believers. We were honored to have Alex share his testimony in both services on Sunday, August 11th. As a child Alex lived through and witnessed some horrible attrocities during the Rwandan genocide of the 1990's. With family members and guardians being killed in front of his eyes, Alex and his siblings were sent to an orphanage where he recieved an Operation Christmas Child shoebox that opened his heart to the love, grace and forgiveness of God. Listen to Alex's testimony as he shares how God provided an opportunity for him to go back to Rwanda and deliver shoeboxes to his old orphanage and also visit the prison holding the very people who murdered his family. The final message in our study of Nehemiah looks at the legacy that Nehemiah leaves behind.
