Wives Submit? Husbands do what? That sounds so archaic and out of touch. The reason we struggle with Paul's encouragement to Husbands and Wives in Ephesians 5:21-33 is because we have forgotten what Marriage was intended to look like. We have settled for mediocre and blah or bailed out when true biblical marriage is so much more. We have always been taught to thank God in the midst of our trials and struggles and even during the storms of life; but what about after they are over? "I just don't like to sing, it is nothing against the hymns or choruses". This statement is becoming more commonplace in worship every Sunday as more and more believers mumble through the song portion of worship. The problem with that is you have the dynamic Holy Spirit of God living inside you and He has a Song to sing. Maybe we need to examine our hearts to find out why we are quenching the Holy Spirit's song each week and discover how that is affecting your day to day lives. Should Christians drink alcohol? Should Christians drink wine? Is wine evil? This passage from Ephesians 5 answers none of those questions and it is time we stop trying to make it say something it does not. It also does not imply that when a Christian is filled with the Spirit they will "act like a drunk". It also does not say that the amount of Holy Spirit we have is insufficient and we need a "second blessing" or a refill - Find out what Paul is trying to say when he reminds the Christians of Ephesus to "not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery, instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit". A little clue to help; it has little to do with you getting more Holy Spirit and a lot to do with the Holy Spirit getting more of you! Many today think that the way we need to reach our nation and world for Christ is to be louder. We need to make a more vocal stand in the political arena or be more vocal about our morals and values. Paul would suggest from Ephesians 5 that their is a different solution. Is Spiritual growth a requirement, an expectation, or an option for the Christian and why is it so important? How important is unity in a church? Without it, a church cannot function, grow, serve or be effective. It is so important that as we move into the more practical aspects of Ephesians, Paul prefaces the promises and power of the church on whether or not they are united. A divided church is a dying church and too many churches have allowed disagreements to turn into division and that division turns into death. Everyone loves to claim Philippians 4:13, "I can do All things". We see it quoted on Facebook, Twitter feeds, we sing about it, memorize it, even claim it as a Biblical promise. The only problem is that before you can attempt the "I can" you must claim the "I am" (small letters). So many of the Biblical promises and principles that Paul lays out throughout all of his letters are based on the premise that you can not achieve them in your own strength. We can try, and many of us do, only to grow frustrated and fall away. To achieve the prescriptive sections of Paul's letters (where he gives us some encouragement on how to apply God's word to our lives) we must realize that it will take the power of the Holy Spirit working in and through us. That can only happen when we begin to see ourselves the way God has now recreated us to be as new creations. "God is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine" These words from the end of Paul's prayer in Ephesians chapter three get passed around, misquoted and posted as a promise on Facebook on a weekly basis. It is used to encourage people that God is always working out something bigger in our lives than we expected, but is He? and is that what this verse promises? The Bible is clear that God can, and will work in and through our lives in ways beyond our imagination but Paul is reminding us here in Ephesians that the power of God does not come down from on high - but out - out from the Holy Spirit's work in our own hearts and lives.
