When you examine the life of Joseph, one has to wonder how he was able to overcome all he was faced with - all of the betrayals, the struggles, the loneliness. What was their about him that allowed him to place his faith completely in God regardless of the circumstances? In the last story we have of Joseph before his death in Genesis, he is visiting with his brothers after their fathers death and in this conversation, he reveals the "core values" that motivated and guided him to be used as an instrument for God's plans. Many Christians can be heard saying, "It would be much easier to follow God if He would just show me where we are going" and one can understand the frustration and even fear from that statement. But if God showed us where He was leading us it would not require faith; it would simply be instruction. Most Christians will not question that we are called to forgive those who have hurt or disappointed us; the words even come easily off of our lips, "I forgive you" but have we really forgiven them? The standard for forgiveness according to scripture (Colossians 3:13) is to forgive as Christ forgave us- that is a high threshold that most of us struggle to achieve. Joseph had given total forgiveness to his brothers and as he reveals himself to them and they experience a great reunion, he walks out that forgiveness and gives us a great example of what real and total forgiveness looks like. At one time or another most of us have disappointed others and lost their trust or lost our trust in someone. Trust is one of those things we take for granted until it is lost and once it is gone; it can be very difficult to restore. For most of us, it is easier to just give up on that person and walk away; but as Christians, grace calls us to a different path. If their was anyone who had a good reason to give up and walk away, it would be Joseph. Yet, he committed himself to seeing his family and their relationships restored and that required rebuilding trust. Even the most optimistic person can allow the struggles and difficulties of life to turn them into a pessimist. We are surrounded with sensational and negative news everyday and it seems like once things turn against us they pile on. A bad day turns into a bad week and continues to grow. While patience may be a virtue, it is a rarity in society today. We are a generation of instant gratification - we want it now; and that has crossed over into our walk of faith. We expect instant results but the Bible teaches us that some of God's greatest lessons come during a period of waiting. Moses waited for 40 years herding sheep on the backside of a desert before God called him, Paul cooled his heels in Arabia for 7 years and even Jesus waited 18 years before starting his public ministry. All of us struggle with temptation; it is a part of life. We are tempted materially, personally and even sexually. It is not a sin to be tempted; even Jesus was tempted in the wilderness and overcame it. The sin comes from how we respond and nothing can short circuit a dream like personal sin. Regardless of what the culture contends, we each have the ability to walk away from temptation - to say no! It is easy to look at people who have achieved great success in their various fields and admire them or even be envious. If one was to look at the end of the book of Genesis and read about Joseph's success, we might admire him. A former prisoner from a foreign land who has risen to become second in command to the Pharaoh of Egypt, a beautiful wife and two sons, surrounded by his brothers and their families, put in a position to save the nation from a great famine - what is not to admire. The only problem is that most of us would not be willing to walk the path and endure the pain, suffering and struggle he faced to see his dreams become a reality. The difference between having big dreams and seeing big dreams become a reality is the amount of faith and trust we are willing to place in God when the path we are on becomes difficult. At least nine times in the Old Testament it is implied that the sins of the father will be passed along to future generations (his children and grandchildren).
