Bible In The News

The 400th Anniversary of the king James Authorized version of the Bible has focussed considerable attention on that Book, with several events planned to take place throughout this year. Certainly, the Bible is in the News! Among those events several exhibitions are to be held in various parts of the world. Exhibitions are to be held throughout the United Kingdom, in Australia and in North America.

The events we are seeing today parallel what the prophets speak of in the very near future. This is the type of situation that is to develope around the invasion by the King of the North. The scriptures talk of both Egypt's smiting and healing when Christ returns - and their eventual submission to him in the Kingdom Age.

Riots and civil unrest are sweeping across the Arab world. This is David Billington with you, for Bible in the News on January 28. First the government in Tunisia fell, swept away by mass protest. In Egypt there are indications that the government is on the way out and maybe even the long term leader Hosni Mubarak. There have also been protests in Algeria, Sudan, Jordan and Yemen. Lebanon is also in turmoil where the Islamist Hezbollah, are gaining more and more control. Will 2011 be remembered as a year of Arab revolutions? Events are progressing rapidly and it will be difficult to see exactly where things are headed for some time. The pendulum could swing towards extremist Muslim governments before swinging back. One thing seems certain, a wind of change is blowing across the Middle East.

Welcome to another edition of the Bible in the News. This week's comment is from Paul Billington and centres upon the well known prophecy concerning the Russian led invasion of the mountains of Israel and its destruction, as described in Ezekiel chapters 38 and 39. Addressing this latter day alliance the prophet says:

This is the Bible in the News with David Billington. France is one of the key nations at the centre of the European Union. So when the French PM Francois Fillon says that closer EU integration is inevitable, it is certainly clear where he sees the European Union to be heading. The Times also quotes him as saying: "Europe finds itself at an historic turning point. The real question right now is whether we keep building on this adventure or whether we leave it at that."

Welcome to another edition of the Bible in the News. This is Paul Billington bringing you this week's edition of our weekly programme. Certainly 2011 has focussed attention on the King James Authorized version of the Bible, with newspapers and electronic media reminding us of the 400th anniversary of this amazing Book, without doubt the most influential Book ever printed in the English language. According to one newspaper report, there have been over six billion copies of it sold!

The Bible speaks clearly of the people of Israel coming back to the land and to the "Mountains of Israel". This week we are going to Israel and Itamar, one of the towns surrounding the Biblical Shechem in the area of Samaria. We have been able to interview Yonatan Boofty, of Arutz Sheva about the Villages that are springing up in the Biblical Judea and Samarai.

The Pope believes the Kingdom of God is the Church - and as the spirit of Christmas spreads - so does the kingdom of God. The Bible teaches the Kingdom of God is the nation of Israel - and soon Christ will return to establish real peace on earth.

Welcome to another edition of the Bible in the News, this is John Billington joining you this week. Well it's another week with Israel at the center of the news headlines with the breakdown of the peace talks. It never ceases to be amazing how a nation of only about 7 million people, which is probably not a whole lot more than the greater Toronto area (For those outside of Canada, Toronto is Canada's largest city!) can continually draw news headlines across the world on a daily basis. Having said that when you come to scripture it is to be expected, the Lord through the prophet Zachariah tells us that "Jerusalem will be a burdensome stone for all people." I think Obama probably curses the land every day as he continually makes a fool of himself trying to be the one who brings peace to the region, although so has every other US president in my lifetime. According to the State Department they said "We have determined that a moratorium extension will not at this time provide the best basis for resuming dire

When one considers the European debt crisis; including the EU Greek bailout, the recent bailout of Ireland, the almost inevitable bail out of Portugal, and with Spain another likely potential for a debt crisis, one may consider the European project in danger. Indeed many are openly stating that the Euro could be finished. The Guardian Newspaper in the UK reported that: "The German chancellor, Angela Merkel, has warned for the first time that her country could abandon the euro if she fails in her contested campaign to establish a new regime for the single currency..." However Simon Derrick, chief currency strategist at Bank of New York Mellon was quoted by the Economist as saying: "Not only do we find it difficult to imagine how a nation could disentangle itself from the single currency... but we also take seriously the fact that the Maastricht Treaty envisioned entry into the euro as being irrevocable" So while it seems unlikely that the Euro or European project will end, it does seem that the European Union

Iran’s president has been threatening to “wipe Israel off the map” for several years now. The world has braced itself for an impending military strike against Iran by Israel. Iran’s push to gain nuclear weapons has added to the deep concern many have felt of an impending nuclear attack on Israel. The Bible clearly states that Zion is the perpetual rest desired by God forever, it cannot be that Iran will destroy it and the people God has chosen.

In a few weeks time we will enter the year 2011, and that will mean that 400 years will have passed since the publication of the King James Authorized version. That version was the result of a fierce controversy - one which set Church authority against the authority of the Bible. The Church and the Bible were not on the same page, so to speak.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper made a great speech on November 9th, speaking out against anti-semitism. He said how "Israel appeared as a light, in a world emerging from deep darkness." Some other highlights of the speech were:

The headlines are not new, and are typical of the past few years: “Israel’s plan for 238 settler homes draws Palestinian ire”... “PLO: No talks while settlements continue” ... “Above the Law: Israeli Settlements & the End of the Two-State Solution” ... “Russia calls for Israel to cancel settlements construction in East Jerusalem” ... “Israel Draws Ire with New Settlements.”

This last week the Economist magazine's cover depicted a racing tiger with the headline: "How India's growth will outpace China's". The article says: "Despite the headlines, India is doing rather well. Its economy is expected to expand by 8.5% this year. It has a long way to go before it is as rich as China—the Chinese economy is four times bigger—but its growth rate could overtake China’s by 2013, if not before. Some economists think India will grow faster than any other large country over the next 25 years. Rapid growth in a country of 1.2 billion people is exciting, to put it mildly."
